Word Magazine Publisher. First tangle with the magazine business was as one of the partners behind a title called The Buzz. This closed in 1989 after 18 issues, which was about as many as Tina Brown managed with Talk. Decided to learn how the professionals did it and joined EMAP as a sales executive working on the music magazine Q, becoming ad manager within two years and developing the close contacts, iron constitution and fluent command of bullshit required, to sell advertising to the music and movie industries. Subsequently became publisher of Q and then Commercial Director of the whole of EMAP Metro, running a team of 60 sales staff, ascending to the dizzy heights of the board and dealing with London's largest media-buying agencies.
