"You're not going out dressed like that are you?! Oh, you are..."
Posted by Patrick Crowther on 17 June 2009 - 8:03pm.
I feel it is time we celebrated fashion crimes in all things rockular and popular. So I shall kick things off with Rush...

And the next one right in here please
Do you win a prize if
you know what Ronson's pointing at?
Or if you're still in possession of a full set of mutton chops?
Well
A: Yes and B: Possibly not.
Looks pretty cool to me
it was de rigeur in Hull, y'know.
(Before anyone has a go, yes I am from Hull. We can laugh at ourselves; why should everyone else have all the fun?!)
Good God
Take them away!
Slade - The Early Years
Not a good look.
As if they got any better!!

Fwoar...
Hey, you know what would look really great...?
Too...many...jokes... Can't...choose...

I'm sorry, but not even Bacofoil can...
rob Agnetha of her natural allure.
Won't get foiled again
I'll get shorter bacofoil next time...
The Abba
girls are definitely not a crime against anything!
Only one word can describe
the fragrant Agnetha
Phwoar!
to give it a nice 70's vibe
The 'Vox
"Damn, I wanted the open-toed sandals!"
Good, and indeed, grief...
that is shocking!
they are
the true definition of NAFF!
Vox protection
well I like em! that fashion is fairly tame, take away the flying goggles and they could be waiting for the 7:32 from Sidcup.
From your shooting fish in barrel correspondent
Pop stars...
don't look like that anymore, do they?
It never ceases to amaze me
that this is Mrs Fripp. But I'm never quite sure which side of the amazement I'm coming from.
He's a wizard with those Frippertronics...
in the bedroom.
Indeed -
It's A Mystery...
not to mention
his Lark's Tongue. Yikes!
We were spoilt in the 80s...
A little more recent...
Hammer time!
The Scottish tribute act...
McHammer.
Gets coat...
And one more for me...
Couldn't resist this!
Looks like the seagulls...
emptied their bowels on his head.
As David Brent would say, many years later...
"You just have to accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue."

Very statuesque. A smile can often be redeeming, no matter what you're wearing.
Ha ha!
Once a comedian always a comedian.
ManoFWOAR...
Ah, the good old day
"Manowar, Manowar
Living on the road
When we´re in town
Speakers explode"
Actual lyrics.
Like Leonard Cohen...
without the poetry.
More actual lyrics...
'Hear the pounding army of the night
The call of metal summons us tonight
And gather we on this site
To behold the power and the might
We wear leather, we wear spikes, we rule the night
Off with the lights, hear the screams
See the banging heads awaken to their dreams.
The sound of metal so loud it cracks the beams
Played by warriors called the Metal Kings.'
Beautiful. Just beautiful.

ALL MEN PLAY ON TEN*
Here's a game
Spot who plays what. I genuinely don't know, so here's a guess: moustache man is the drummer, the guy on the right with the awesome pecs is the singer. Shorty on the left must be the bass player, which just leaves the Nigel Tufnell looky-likey second from the right as the guitarist. Am I right?
Scary
that was only taken last week.
A mate of mine actually bought a Manowar album where all the sleeve notes were in runic. All I can ask is, ffs WHY?
So, was I right?
Who plays what then?
And then there was this...
Paul Revere & The Raiders
Proof this isn't just a modern phenomena. (is that Peter Beardsley top left?)
Same game
Another round of who plays what. I'm guessing the bloke bottom right is the singer (Mr. Revere?). Peter Beardsley is the drummer, Blondie is the bass player, Mr. Top Center is the guitarist and the top right fella is the keyboardist. I could google the answer but it's more fun learning how wrong I am from you good folks.
Here we go...
Somewhat boring outfits in comparison, but the dancers are awesome!
And here they are a coupla years ago... don't these men ever learn?
Hmm...
So I got Mr. Revere and the drummer right. As Mrs. Loaf's youngest almost said, 2 out of 5 ain't bad.
Not clever enough to post a picture
This was always my fav.
The standout at the time was Ozzy, Miss Braddock my art teacher had the same outfit and she was hot!
Looking now though all four get-ups were classics of the era.

Bulldog
Has anyone got a picture of this band (Containing Gene Cornish - ex Rascals)?
The liner shot shows 5 guys looking like thugs wearing eye-liner and paint, looking like they have just come from a street-fight?
Mind you they did a version of 'Rocking Robin' that p**ses over the original (seriously)
This guy had to feature at some point...
Odd
I've never seen Tom Baker's Doctor without his scarf.
This never fails to tickle me
How is it that Crosby is the only one who looks remotely (and remarkably, given the look) cool?
(I know this is nominally about clothes, but......)
Awww... they don't look too bad to me!
The clothes are OK... Crosby looks quite cool. The only truly tragic thing about this photo is the strange piece of fur that has attached itself under Stephe Stills' mouth. Oh, and that mouth is full of new teeth.
crosby, stills &
gnashers?
The polo necks, the glasses, the cape...
They got a group discount from...
'Syrups-R-Us' on Sunset Boulevard.
...the Nick Lowe haircut
I like that look
Inspired many after them: Inspiral Carpets, Ramones, Shoegazers, The Roses and of course Edwyn "wore his fringe like Roger McGuinn's".
I think this takes a bit of beating
Country Life, eh?
Makes a change from tweeds, Barbour jackets, green wellies and the like.
So
when's Eno going to do the Time Warp then?
The end was just a few moments away
Two for the price of one
If only this photo was just an illusion...
Paul Stanley (love gun thankfully not pictured)
"Did you see the suits, and the platform boots?"
"Oh dear, oh lord, oh my-oh-my-oh"
One part of me hopes they dig out the old costumes later this year, the other part hopes they act with the dignity due to their advanced years :-)
Old costumes
Do you suppose they'd still fit?
Slim though I am, I know I'd struggle to get into any of my 70s gear.
What? 54 posts and still no. . .
Bloody hell...
the lasses of the 1970s would settle for anything, wouldn't they?! That bloke second from the right... what precisely is he wearing? Did his gran knit it for him in time for the photo shoot?
I am sure that in the future science will reveal that the members of the Bay City Rollers were actually examples of a previously undiscovered evolutionary offshoot of Homo sapiens.
A veritable fright show.
Sadly you're wrong
The lasses of the 1970s wouldn't settle for anything (as I'm sure many of my prog album clutching contemporaries will testify). You've taken the scab off a self-esteem wound that has taken these 30 years to heal. Damn you! You're not a self-employed psychiatrist looking to drum up work are you?
I'm very sorry...
to have lifted that scab of self-esteem and poured a vat of salt inside. Prog-loving blokes were just unlucky... the lasses couldn't fathom that the key to life's mysteries was to be found on Side Three of Tales From Topographic Oceans....
And that is a
truism that still holds to this very day. Women eh?
Aw...
You can't beat
a bit of trombone action.
As the actress said to the bishop,
etc
Something REALLY creeps me out about the Bay City Rollers
i can never put my finger on what. brrr.
well
Mr Paton certainly did!
(cough)
You meant to type 'allegedly', of course...
No allegedly needed
You can't libel the dead. Paton died a few weeks ago. Accuse away...
Did he?
Does that mean I can now say that all of his money came from drug dealing on a huge scale? :-)
Pink, it was love at first sight
pink, its like red but not quite
.
how about...
actually, it's quite a faff posting an image...... it was a good one of Yes, anyway.
Not exactly leading edge

ok, here's the Yes one

here you go (answers in FAQ)
And of course there's....
Aagh!
My poor bleeding retinae.
And they wondered why it was one of the lowest-selling albums of all time..
The Great Scots!
They were the future (apparently)
The jury's out on this one...
I can't decide whether they look ridiculous or impossibly cool. I am leaning in the direction of impossibly cool. Maybe it's both.
cool cats
Impossibly cool, there's something about this cover that I just love...can't put my finger on it though. Of course that microphone cable is in dangerous proximity to that water feature on the right.
Definitely cool
That's a fantastic cover, but I should imagine they'd look rather out of place at the Dog and Duck...
This lot take some beating
Oh no...
you have just reminded me of one of the worst gigs I've ever seen, The Leningrad Cowboys at Cropredy in around 1993. I thought they were utterly shite.
On the other hand...
This is probably the live performance I wished I'd seen, above any other:
So *that's* why punk had to happen...
R-E-S-P-E-C-T...
Surely this wins

It's The Horrors...
Oh dear
This is the same person that co-wrote...

So simple, yet so... naff.

Sympathy For The Knee Pad?
Strewth, Mick... put something on, you'll catch your death...
Any excuse...
Thank you
I wonder just how many pubescent and pre-pubescent boys' first stirrings were as the result of Kate Bush and outfits like this. Even at 9 years old I knew that there was something ever so slightly 'kinky' about all this. It helped that the songs were great too.
Well, if you're counting...
I'm one for a start. And there's you, so that makes two...
I'm fairly certain there's more.
By the way, surely there must be some good stories from the time Kate Bush appeared on Whistle Test? Future podcast material, methinks...
In the famous words of Steve Martin when he was still funny...
You'd think she'd acknowledge my existence after all those years I spent holding her poster up with one hand.
(And I bet she got side 3 of Topographic Oceans)
You just *know* that she'd know...
who Patrick Moraz is. Sigh...
From our Icelandic correspondent
I am...
...the only person on the planet who loved that dress.
Could have done without the egg-laying, though.
no
I think it's great too - very funny - don't get why it's taken so seriously and appears so frequently in the 'fashion disaster' columns. It was a joke.
Use of this costume led
Use of this costume led indirectly to Genesis becoming the band famous for That's All.
The 2011 'The Lamb Revisited Tour' version...
Only kidding Phil, you're an ace drummer, good singer and writer of some decent pop tunes. And your backing vocals on Sweet Little Mystery by John Martyn are beautiful.
Get the funk outta here!
Fighting for their right to wear safety gear
this is case in point
do we draw the line between silly costumes and things people wore thinking they looked cool.
Ah.
Good question.
100 up, and this one's a corker...
Ronnie James Dio: Genius of Comedy
when asked about Ozzy, was supposed to have replied:
"Ozzy Osbourne? Couldn't carry a tune in a fucking bucket"
Shame he was only 3' 6" though. If he'd been in Spinal Tap he'd have been just the right size for the Stonehenge set.
Inaudible but sadly not invisible
Joss shtick?
Eye fang ewe.
Isn't that
David Crosby's hair that she's wearing? And isn't that dress an exact scale representation of the inside of his head circa 1973?
Corn beef legs
.
Mind you..
...you would, though, wouldn't you?
Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five...
...enjoying a game of 'First Up, Best Dressed'.
I saw GMF&TFF on their first UK tour
and having heard 'The Adventures Of...' and possibly 'The Message', I was expecting them to look like something other then they did look!
Not sure what I was expecting but we got spangles and gold lame instead of something a little more, err, 'street'
The Palace Of Righteous Justice
Demis Demis, I've got a crush on you...
Notice the recurring orange motif.
I've just realised...
that this is Pop Will Eat Itself. I was going to have another game of Who Plays What. I recognize Clint Poppy from his hair, and Mr Orange Hair is the guitarist. Beyond that, er, Bloke left is the drummer, Bloke right is the bass player, and the guy at the back must be Mr. Keyboard Player.
whouldathunk
Clint would be soooo successful - could we hear it foretold in Psychopath in my Soup? Beaver Patrol?
Send Them In Now...
Here are this year's candidates Sir Alan.
yeah, baby
As David Johansen famously said, "We like to look 16 and bored shitless".
OK, they've achieved half of that, with top marks for Mr Thunders who is obviously deciding that this will be the last photo in the shoot.
Nice suits boys
Better Nudie
than nude...
Although you may think differently, Ms G.
Nope
Fairly certain you are entirely correct on that one!
Gram's weed festooned suit...
...became iconic and is now displayed in the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville.
Are any other of these signature outfits on display anywhere?
Roxy
bollocks to the lot of you, I saw Roxy that day at Crystal Palace and exhibition aside back in the colonial days when we were bashing the natives, they were the bees knees.
Some lovely knitwear here
Don't any birds ever write
Don't any birds ever write in to you knee jerks?
Fatigues
and is that PEACE written on his guitar strap?
Oh the irony :-)
Nah... it says 'RACEY'....
he bought a guitar from them and forgot to take the strap off.
My favourite Jethro Tull picture
Tsk - I bet some of you haven't even got a favourite Jethro Tull picture have you?
I'll raise you... this
Hey! indeed
The Glitter Band proving that putting makeup and Bacofoil on ugly blokes doesn't automatically enhance their hermaphroditic appeal but instead makes them look like participants in a Castle Bingo hen night.
And the moral of this story is...
never let a team of brickies near the make up and dressing up boxes, else there'll be tears before bedtime.
Scheiße
Scary
Looks like Shaun Locke's DNA has been spliced with Joe 90.
With the strings cut.
Or, it's The League of Tedium heavily disguised. Attention Scum!
The (Chicory) Tip of the iceberg.
As it's almost Father's Day ...would anyone own up to being the son of any of this lot?
Proof, if any were needed,
that great wealth and good taste do not always go together.
From mod to odd...
"Hey Mum... what do you think of my new costume?!"
"Very nice dear. Now sit down at the table, your fish fingers are almost ready."
Who the heck is that?
Just as I opened the picture - Southside Johnny's "I don't want to go home" came on the iPod.
The chap above may not be allowed to...
That, my friend, is...
GWAR!
Their gigs are legendary... during the one I saw, the chap at the front sprayed the crowd with slime fired from his phallic appendage. For the finale, the crowd was showered with fake blood. The show was at the Astoria and as I left I saw a group of nuns outside on Charing Cross Road looking at us with a mixture of absolute horror and abject pity.
I see
from a quick look at Wikipedi that Jerry Garcia has been one of their targets...
They're alright in my book
Wikipedia is so useful...
I have just been informed that it wasn't fake blood, rather 'water and powdered food coloring which, for the most part, flakes off or washes out easily.'
So there you are.
All hail Mr Bernard Jewry...

Has the appearance of the evil genius/svengali behind the group. He must be a millionaire!
My name is Bond...
What the hell is that?!
Eh?
I'm confused...
I must be dreaming...
What is this from? Do I really want to know?!

An odd one.

I like Ritchie's new look,

Say that Ritchie Blackmore's gone bonkers.
