Your Mind Is On Vacation

London massive folk: the great Mose Allison is playing 'til Sunday at the Pizza Express Jazz Club, Dean St, Soho. His songs have been covered by The Who, Van, Costello and The Clash - so it's a good opportunity to go back to the source. He's even playing Parchman Farm, which both Georgie Fame and John Mayall covered in the early 60s.
This clip was 30 years ago and though he'll be 82 this year he's still cooking up a storm.

Allison
by Pixies is also referring to him I believe. Wish I was in London.
And when the planet hit the sun
Frustrating how few visiting artists can play beyond London, it's just the raw economics of it. I saw the Pixies at Alexandra Palace a few years back and when they played Allison the place erupted, actually shook with people jumping up and down. The venue's on top of a hill that it seemed we might have been heading down any moment. Not sure they all knew it was about Mose from Mississippi...
Is he not coming to the capital?
Shame.
Daughter Amy is good too!
No jazz though. It's sorta country music. Great lyrics. My favourite is "One Thing In Mind" from the album 'Sad Girl'. "The Whiskey Makes You Sweeter" is her song.
She has a very distinctive voice that may put people off. Hard to describe it but high pitched and nasal is about right.
Amy's got a new CD
out this month: 'Sheffield Streets' featuring Elvis Costello and Van Dyke Parks. There's a clip of her and Mose dueting on her website http://www.amyallisonmusic.com/
Oh crumbs
I just had a listen to Amy on Spotify. Frankly, I almost burst out laughing as she started to sing. The music's good though - so I will give it a further try - but that her voice is "an acquired taste" may be a reasonable assessment
I'll see if I can get the Light to take me along to Pizza Express for Mose for a Dad's day treat - although, it's around the corner from where I work and I hate coming into the area at weekends
Know the feeling
but it'd be worth it Sheev. Amy is worth sticking with too, some real gems in there. Our Beloved Leader (Heppo) said that Amy gets very good after a glass of red wine - and I think he meant him drinking it not her.
Might
need the whole bottle!
It'll all
end in tears though...
I love Mose Allison's music...
so much. That's all I have to say.
Amy : I like both the Allisons!
