Just for fun. List them in the thread, if enough people bother and if I get time I may try to collate them for some sort of Word Massive consensus after a week or two.

See my fairly predictable choices in the comments.

The Band

I bought their self-titled album the other day, and compared to 'Music From The Big Pink' it had far more of an instant appeal. It's taken me a few years to appreciate the aforementioned album for what it is.

The Bends and OK Computer are "non-negotiable", as you say. But Kid A?! This is where I fell out of love with Radiohead.

0

Have an up

for mentioning the Dan Reed Network. One of my all time favourite live acts but I think that's the first time I've seen them mentioned on here. Personally I think the first album edges it, but there's not much in it.

clivetemple | 8 June 2010 - 7:35pm

We did this before : here is a different list, probably

Exile On Main Street - Rolling Stones
Handful Of Earth - Dick Gaughan
Kate and Anna McGarrigle 1st elpee
This Nation's Saving Grave - The Fall
Djam Leeli - Baaba Maal and Mansour Seck
Roses In The Snow - Emmylou Harris
The Bairns - Rachel Unthank & The Winterset
Clandestino - Manu Chao
Call Me - Al Green
2 Many DJs : As Heard On Radio Soulwax Pt. 2

Another list tomorrow, maybe.

One of these days we should do Top Ten Compilations. These are usually disqualified from these lists, pompously in my view, as if all rock is like Schubert song cycles, when some artists are all about singles and are less about albums, especially during the 50s and early 60s. Though somehow they allow Elvis Presley's Sun Collection and a few other select platters. But this is for another day.

0
Doods | 8 June 2010 - 7:35pm

Well if we are having several goes at it...

The Undertones
Horses - Patti Smith
Marcus Garvey - Burning Spear
Rum, Sodomy and The Lash - The Pogues (current version with the extra tracks please)
Blonde On Blonde - Bob Dylan
The Clash
The Rite Of Spring - Stravinsky
Acadian Memories - The Balfa Brothers
Louis Armstrong's Hot Fives and Hot Sevens (the one on JSP...I know, a compilation...cheating)
If You Want Blood, You Go It - AC/DC

Still, seems a bit light. Tomorrow may have to shoehorn in some Ray Charles, Ann Peebles, Planxty, Mingus, Van, Joni...

2

The problem with this

As per my boring the North West Massive with this last week, I have been car-buying and have taken possession of said beast tonight. Now, the previous jalopy of extremely long standing had a radio/cassette and not a radio/CD, so you would think I would be champing at the bit to fill it with loads of these (er...) 20 platters I've mentioned.

Instead, actually, three - Marcus Garvey, Djam Leeli and The Bairns. It would be four but my copy of Clandestino is duff. It would be five only I left my copy of Exile in the feckin' hire car.
Instead : compilations (soul, reggae, Ray Charles), a few new ones (still hadn't listened to that Doom thing I picked up ), Toumani Diabate's Symmetrical Orchestra, Tinariwen, a bit of classical (Beethoven, Messiaen). Not much rock there just now. probably because I had a pretty rockin' winter and the changes are being rung. On the other hand I am about to rummage for stuff following the Massive pressing some buttons: it is ages since I listened to The Hissing Of Summer Lawns, The Nightfly, Entroducing, The Scream (no-one chose it, just mentioned Siouxsie), some Little Feat, which is half the point of the whole List thing, the other half being to point you at stuff you don't know, obviously.

Actually, what bugger nicked my copy of Hissing Of Summer Lawns ?!?!? (OK, Hejira then...)

How often do you actually listen to your Top Ten, or is this for another day ?

0
Doods | 10 June 2010 - 12:20am

Interesting question

Of mine, *points down* I listen regularly to the Miles Davis, Alice Coltrane, & Brian Charles, I've been listening to Exile a lot recently : the others are the kind of treasured old favourites that I have listened to many many times. So I don't play them so often but when I do, I nearly always ask myself "Why don't I play this more often?". ("because I'm listening to lots of new stuff too" is usually the answer.)

On leaving CDs in hire cars - I always duplicate CDs for cars after several unfortunate incidents of car CD players eating them and also of me being forgetful. I had to buy "Axis: Bold As Love" again, which I did on the day that it emerged from the car CD player with a deep gouge, but it took ages to find a replacement copy of several others that were eaten by or left in different cars.

0
el hombre malo | 10 June 2010 - 6:27am

I've found that

Using an ipod in the old jalopy with a Griffin itrip does away with the problem of damaged or lost C.D.s plus less bulk to lug around and way more listening options.

0
Pencilsqueezer | 10 June 2010 - 11:41am

iTrip Blues

My first iPod had an iTrip, as it turns out, courtesy of someone who left it in a hire car in France.

This iPod died, and and I had to buy a new iTrip, which was nowhere near as good. It had two modes : International , which cuts out at random, and US, where has fewer frequencies to play with and is much more hissy. Plus, the new iPod is slimmer and the nnew iTrip is correspondingly thin, but not as robust, and I reckoned it was damaging the connector, so I had gone back to ye olde cassette adapters.

I did start off trying to go through the process of returning it, but Griffin doin't seem to be represented in this country, and the US arm wanted me to produce physical evidence that I had destroyed it. That might have been fun , if I had the technology, but ended up more trouble than it was worth.

I am sure that Other Adapters Are Available. If anyone can recommend one I may have a look at it.

*Kate Bush - The Dreaming

( I've got at least ten more in me, but I won't try your patience any longer... )

This minute's top 10

Really no order...
1. Abbey Road, the Beatles
2. The clock comes down the stairs - Microdisney
3. Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express - The go-betweens
4. Going Blank again - Ride
5. Blood on the Tracks - Bob Dylan
6. Revolver - The Beatles
7. Pretzel Logic - Steely Dan
8. Takk - Sigur Ros
9. Fragments of a Rainy Season - John Cale
10. Velvet Underground and Nico

on another day I might be persuaded to swap Bob Dylan's greatest hits vol 2 or the Royal Scam for one of the above (assuming compilations are allowed).

0

albums or bands

I someone is mad enough to add up the votes, then it might we worthwhile also doing it the artist and not just the album. Some of us agree on, say, Radiohead but differ on the best album. whereas there is no dispute on Microdisney, apparently.

0
paulwright | 9 June 2010 - 11:11am

Off the top of my head...

The first 10 to barge their way into my mind this morning, in no particular order are -

Remain in Light - Talking Heads
The Royal Scam - Steely Dan
Hejira - Joni
Blonde on Blonde - Dylan
On the Beach - Neil
Attack & Release - Black Keys
Mezzanine - Massive Attack
Feats Don't Fail me Now - Little Feat
Hissing of Summer Lawns - Joni (again)
One World - John Martyn

1
Avidfan | 9 June 2010 - 11:33am

Off the top of my head in no particular order todays ten are...

A Hard Day's Night/HJH
Exile On Main St/Rolling Stones
Blonde On Blonde/Bob Dylan
After The Goldrush/Neil Young
Marquee Moon/Television
Surf's Up/The Beach Boys
It's Too Late To Stop Now/Van Morrison
I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight/Richard & Linda Thompson
Station To Station/David Bowie
Good Old Boys/Randy Newman

1
Seamus | 9 June 2010 - 12:12pm

My 10

different tomorrow, off the top of my head, no particular order, blah, blah, blah

Exile On Main St. - The Rolling Stones
The Unforgettable Fire - U2
Born To Run - Bruce Springsteen
Quadrophenia - The Who
Scott 4 - Scott Walker
Hoochie Coochie Man: Complete Chess Masters, Volume 2 - 1952-1958 - Muddy Waters
Survival - Bob Marley & The Wailers
Veedon Fleece - Van Morrison
London Calling _ The Clash
One World - John Martyn
Aja - Steely Dan

that's 11

Of course if all bets are off and we're including compilations/box sets (already got the Muddy one above which everyone should have) then the following would be in there

The Chess Box - Howlin' Wolf
Down Every Road - Merle Haggard
The Essential George Jones: The Spirit Of Country
Genius & Soul: The 50th Anniversary Collection - Ray Charles
Queen Of Soul: The Atlantic Recordings - Aretha Franklin
Otis! The Definitive Otis Redding
Tougher Than Tough: The Story Of Jamaican Music
The Stax Boxes
The Chess Story
King Of The Blues - B.B. King

I could go on all day of course, just like the rest of you, I could probably manage a definitive top 500 list but even that would never be finished. A fun exercise but pointless in the end.

Invisible Bowie

"where's Bowie?"

Good point, Pat. As I write, I have only been able to find his name 24 times in this thread :)

For Cry Tough - absolutely beautiful. Nils is so underrated.

0
Badlands | 9 June 2010 - 7:21pm

Nils is great as a solo artist

although I prefer his first album with "Back it Up", "Keith Don't Go" and "One More Saturday Night" and a sublime version of "Goin' Back".

Some of Josh Rouse's stuff reminds me of that vibe

Nice top 3...

... and all came out within a 12-month period around 1989-90 I think - a high watermark for electronic British pop, I'd say.

Beyond that, your taste seems so close to mine that I'm going to give The Editors another chance...

0
Metal Mickey | 10 June 2010 - 8:14am

Editors

Their last album, 'In this light and on this evening' is very electronic and heavily inspired by Depeche Mode in the late 80s/early 90s, so I reckon you might enjoy that album.

0

Tis a thing of wonder.

Quite agree, just magnificent.

0
Declan | 10 June 2010 - 11:10am

What a fantastic thread.

If ever you wanted to demonstrate the concept of like-minded individuality, this thread does it. All of us different, all very individualistic, but all united by a desire to look beyond the mundane whilst not discarding it entirely.

Look down all the selections. If you can find one, apart from your own, where you say "Yeah, heard all of 'em" then you can hold your head up as a true anorak.

0
Lenny Law | 9 June 2010 - 11:23pm

10 is a meaningless number

It's like the Desert Island Discs thing. Most of us can do top 20 or 30 - and (as per another thread) they would be the albums that would be 'All Killer, No Filler'

But you look at other choices and you think (random ones here)
'How did I miss that one?'
'How Can I leave out the Beatles/Stones/Dylan/Joni etc.?'
'What Do My Choices (or omissions) say about me?'

I love R n' B/Soul/jazz/funk - but that's not reflected in the albums I have chosen.

Anyone else second-guessing themselves after looking at the other choices here?

1
Badlands | 10 June 2010 - 12:18am

All Killer No Filler ?

I go along with some of that, but not all.

Some of my faves have flaws : Exile has Sweet Black Angel and Shine A Light, while Astral Weeks has Beside You, which I have been skipping forever.

I forgive flawed and lesser tracks if the rest carries it, just as, I would rather go see messy old Hamlet than some minor but perfectly formed miniature.

And yes, the figure of 10 is arbitrary, just as Desert Island Discs is, but it does concentrate the mind a little. In my case, loads of folk, classical and jazz fell off.

Second guessing ? Trout Mask Replica. Sometimes it is the only thing that will do. But do I really want to pick it ? Astral Weeks was left out because I hadn't heard it in yonks, but then I was prompted to put it on this morning...

0
Doods | 10 June 2010 - 12:40am

OK - Stats

With caveats. If we ever do this again, I want a consistent separation character between artists and albums, and an agreed naming convention <inserts smiley>. I've wrestled this into a hashtable and had it count the number of times an artist or album is mentioned, with the following caveats - only comments where artist and album were both listed and separated with a "-". Different spellings and abbreviations would count twice, ie Led Zep /= Led Zeppelin (though I did eyeball this abridged list quickly).

Just a quick comment -
U2 and REM aren't exactly pulling up trees are they?
And no Syd or 'Piper' as far as I can see.

As this is like eating wine gums or peanuts where you have to have just one more,......Billy Fury - 'The Sound Of Fury'.
Not mentioning that in my Top 10 has been bugging me more than the World Cup coverage on SKY!

0

doh!

…a shame, as just after the cut off point, New Order’s Technique racked up its second and third inclusions….

And I have Hissing of Summer Lawns at 5 even before the deadline was applied….

0
walker182 | 10 June 2010 - 11:30am

Yes it wasn't a very scientific count

...or indeed a deadline, I just couldn't see anyone doing a by-hand frequency chart, so had the computer do the crunch work. Unfortunately, computers don't make assumptions unless they are programmed to, so "Hissing of Summer Lawns" isn't the same as "The Hissing of Summer Lawns"

My top 10

I have tried to obliterate all the above suggestions from my memory banks and start a fresh.

There has to be a starting point and mine as always is:
1. Exiles on main street.
now where to go from there -
2. Jimi Hendrix - Last Rays of the Rising Sun. - currently on the car system.
3. John Martyn - Grace and Danger - despite trying to flush my memory cache it is listed above - great album - great guy.
4. Emmylou Harris - Wrecking Ball - a crucial album - turned me on to many of the artists whose songs she covered on that album.
5. Traffic - Traffic (2nd album). - just a brilliant album full of brilliant songs and saw Stevie with Eric in recent weeks.
6. Cream - Disraeli Gears - (see 5 above) and saw it on Classic Albums recently.
7. Rosanne Carter - The List - borrowed from local library - sympathetic covers of classic country songs which her father liked.
8. Stevie Wonder - Songs in the key of Life. - missed it completely when it was first released and was introduced to it by a much younger work collegue.
9. Walter Becker - Circus Money - one of the albums I played the most in the last year.
10. HJH - The White Album - because Exiles (See 1. above) without the White Album is like (Oh I don't know - Stan without Laurel - Salt without pepper - Stones without Beatles - if you know what I mean).

OK that's 10.

If I started again there would be 9 different or maybe not.

"Time for bed" said Zebedee.

0

Shout for Louder Than Bombs….

I think this and Strangeways were the first Smiths albums I ever heard and they’re still the two that I enjoy the most… the inclusion of some of the later B-Sides (Rubber Ring, You Just Haven’t Earned It Yet Baby) gives the album a brighter feel than Hatful. I suppose those that were into the Smiths while they were still active may have viewed both Strangeways and Louder as flawed by the fact that they were treading the same paths already walked by Queen is Dead and Hatful. However, as someone who came to The Smiths after the event (about 1989 to be precise) I tend to view these albums for what they are and for me these are the real gems in the Smiths back catalogue…

0
walker182 | 11 June 2010 - 3:28pm

The inside ticking of remorse

Purists will scoff, but track-for-track, pound-for-pound, there's an excellent case for LTB as The Smiths' best album... without the slow-ish build up that we had in the UK, if these 24 tracks were your first exposure to the band (as they were compiled to be for the US market), I can easily imagine thinking you've found the greatest band of all time.

Top 10

As a 54 year man, compiling this list is something I have done, in my head on a virtual daily basis.
Todays list is as follows

Abbey Road

Sgt Pepper

Ziggy Stardust (The soundtrack to my teenage years !! )

Wish you were here

London Calling

Physical Graffiti

All Mod cons

The Specials (Debut album)

Liberty of norton Folgate

Leftfield

These lists are often defined by what is left out, & like so many on this site, I could knock out 5 different list no bother.

Springsteen, Kate Bush, Slade in Flame, Parrallel lines, Odelay, First Dexies album. Sheer heart attack, Plastic beach, Johnny Cash, so much music, so little time............
