you know... the devil doesn't have all the good tunes

simontyler's picture

as a committed Jewish Atheist I have a deep seated love for pop songs which dip their toe in Christian theology.

My current fave rave is from this wonderful group of 12 year olds "Villagers".

I cant stop listening to this so thought I would share

He doesn't have all of them...

but he sure as hell has a mighty collection.

Yup

I'll take the dark side juke box over the white one anyday.

Check out Roy Buchanan's

The Messiah Will Come Again. Folksy, cheesy, homespun good ol' boy fundamentalist nonsense? Sure, but that Telecaster sings and wails like a banshee.

Looks like

I will have to dig out my Roy Buchanan anthology again. Classic track - thanks for the reminder.

Wow...

...I've never heard a note of Roy Buchanan before, but I can see I'll have to nip over to amazon. Splendid stuff, really atmospheric...

Anyway, we can't possibly have a thread like this without those all-embracing polytheists of pop, yes, I speak only of QUINTESSENCE...

As always

black people singing 'bout Jesus is a whole lot less creepy than white people singing 'bout Jesus

I think this lot

Listening to these women sing live is an amazing experience,

whether or not you believe in any deities:

We caught them in concert in Clifton Cathedral in Bristol, years ago, and I was completely flabberghasted by the quality of their performance.

Mmmmmore

I absolutely adore the Louis Armstrong version of "Go Down Moses". Now I know its a old slave tune, but being heavily based on Scripture, I think its admissable in this case.

And the trumpet solo is fantastic.
