You have thirty seconds

Cookieboy's picture

There was a thread here a while back on unusual words in songs, that is words that don't appear often (or at all) in other songs. My suggestion was "plebian" from Cry Me A River.

The US quiz show Jeopardy had a question on that very subject recently and I thought I'd pass it along.

The subject was US Number 1's

I have to reword the question slightly (due to the format of the show) but it amounted to this...

What 1962 novelty song was the only No. 1 hit to have the word "electrodes" in the lyrics?

You have 30 seconds to answer.

easy

"why...

... in the world would anybody put electrodes on me?"

Formbyman | 20 December 2011 - 10:32pm

Yes I guessed correctly also

I should have pointed out that of the three contestants one was correct, one didn't finish in time (they half wrote it) and the third put as their response Please Mr Postman!

"Please Mr Postman look and see, if there are electrodes, electrodes for me”

I don't think Easy by the Commodores

mentions electrodes, Nick. It was released much later too.

badartdog | 20 December 2011 - 11:07pm

yes, but as Formbyman has identified

it does mention electrodes....

I am so gullible

I just looked up the lyric.

Crystals: He's a Rebel

See the way he walks down the street
Watch the way he shuffles his feet
My, he holds his head up high
When he goes walking by
He's my guy

When he holds my electrodes, I'm so proud
'Cause he's not just one of the crowd
My baby's always the one
To try the things they've never done
And just because of that, they say
He's a rebel etc. etc.

Does it rhyme

electrodes with abodes?

Oxytocins

Mentioned in Overpowered by Roisin Murphy.

immediate thought

Monster Mash? But was it a number one? I am sure it was a hit in the UK in the 70s, but I thought it was older than that.

That was the one

I hinted at above. Something about touching electrodes that shake you from you abodes (or similar - I could google it but I'm relying on pure retentive brain power).

It was early sixties I think - its definitely been around longer than I have!

Damn

Only just spotted this.

"The ghouls all came from their humble abodes
To catch a jolt from my electrodes"

From memory, not Google.

On the subject of wacky rock'n'roll did anyone hear Hank Mizell's Jungle Rock on the TOTP 1976 Christmas special last song? No-one else does rock'n'roll like the Americans despite our best efforts.

Not this performance, I hasten to add.

How many electrodes

must a man walk down before you can call him a man?

Ahh_Bisto | 21 December 2011 - 11:48am

Cry Me A River?

I always thought it was Crimea River! God, what was I thinking?

MyAmericanMate | 21 December 2011 - 1:51pm

YOU'RE ALL WRONG!!

This is Jeopardy, remember.

The answer has to be phrased as a question or it doesn't count.

What is the Monster Mash?

Would that count as the correct, er, answer?

I love that song ("It was the moooonster mash") - I am sure I remember Pans People/Legs & Co dancing to it. I ain't gonna Google but I think it had a re-release in '74 ish and got to Number 1 in the UK.

Is it correct to say that they just released it again because they wanted to - i.e. it wasn't in a popular film or TV series of the time?

0
Austin | 22 December 2011 - 3:48am

That's correct

It was originally released in 1962 and may have had a new lease of life in the 70s as a result of being played on Stewpot's Junior Choice (just a guess).
