You off anywhere nice ?

el hombre malo's picture

In a few short weeks, I'll be enjoying the blissful peace & quiet of Islay. There will be beaches, body-boarding, picnics, a distillery visit, seals in the bay, and the kind of fresh air that is very invigorating.

2010 august 08 139

So, Massive - are you off anywhere nice on your holidays ?

Please note - when I asked this last year we had a little panic as some people realised that they might have given too much detail and accidentally publicised a nice burglary opportunity, so I'm not wanting to see "on the 7th we go for 3 weeks..", just an idea.

6

The customary...

...family takeover of a big house in the country. The FPO's folks have rented a place on the West Sussex/Hampshire border in July, and we're descending en masse. It'll be nice.

Also, it's mine and Mrs Bob's 10th wedding anniversary on June 30th (10! how the hell did THAT happen?), so I'm spending a frankly revolting amount of money on the same suite we stayed in on our wedding night. Since we got married, the hotel has been massively pimped up, as well as changing its name, so it's now crazily pricey. But she's worth it. I'll be in trouble if she finds out how much it cost, though. So we're doing that - dumping the kids on my folks for the weekend, and generally eating, drinking, relaxing, being pampered, and erm... whatever else occurs to us.

Excellent work, Bob.

You may break the record for Brownie points for your anniversary plans. I would love it if Mr Drakeygirl came up with a similarly romantic plan for our 16th anniversary in September. And, lucky me, I hear that - since our wedding night stay there - the Holiday Inn just by the A1 at Sandy has been pimped up to Travelodge standards.

EDIT: Although thinking about it, we might still be barred.

9
drakeygirl | 2 May 2011 - 10:57am

I too

would love it if Mr Baby had similar thoughts for our approaching anniversary - 18 years on Thursday!!! Alas, as we got married on the lovely island of Antigua, and we're still paying for it in a way, as one credit card was added to another, and another etc, I very much doubt we'll ever get back...

1
Susie Baby | 2 May 2011 - 11:39am

Friends of mine got married in the Canaries

and one of the formal witnesses was another guest they'd just met for the first time at the hotel ... Mr Don McLean.

No, not the APH, but one half of the Crackerjack* comedy duo (with Peter Glaze) - superb!

* Crackerjack!

Douglas | 2 May 2011 - 12:17pm

This is the place.

We had our reception here too. When we knew it, it was rather charmingly down at heel - scuffed carpets and slightly rubbish studwork-and-plasterboard corridors. It was the cheapest place we looked at by a considerable margin, and was far prettier than anywhere else - gorgeous on the outside, but definitely a bit Fawlty inside. They were SO kind to us, though. I remember it very fondly, despite seeing more of the car park than anywhere else thanks to the pre-speech nerve-calming fags I was getting through at the rate of about a pack an hour.

So, natch, in the intervening decade they've gone entirely Pimp My Ride ("") on it and turned it very posh indeed. Which is fine, but I did cry a couple of blood-streaked tears when handing over my card details.

Bob | 2 May 2011 - 5:05pm

Looks like the perfect place

I'm thinking maybe around June 30th.

Brittany

2 weeks in the summer. Hired a place near the sea in a town with a decent track record for crepes. We still ferry it as the idea of an airport and 3 year old twins is too much to bear. The drive should be ok (some of the hundreds of pounds we save by going on the ferry rather than a plane, we have invested in a pair of dvd screens for the car).

The kids like to try different foods so cooking and eating out should be fun. Digging on the beach is considered an olympic sport in our family and we should be able to visit a few WW2 sites for my sons burgeoning interest in recent military history.

And the wine will be nice.

Leedsboy | 2 May 2011 - 10:04am

two holidays planned

- he said rather grandly.

28th May we'll celebrate the GLW's and her twin's birthday bu getting up at stupid o'clock and driving to Aberdeen to get a ferry to Shetland - stopping only to sample the excellent pies at Westmoreland service. Then a week of walking, wildlife watching and conviviality. Not disimilar to Islay but a bloody sight further.

End of July 10 of us are off to France. Not entirely sure where but the GLW tells me it's near Cognac. Oops. 2 weeks of lounging about and stuffing my face. Marvellous.

What's the betting that the drive to Aberdeen and back is harder and more stressful than driving in France?

0
cradlerock | 2 May 2011 - 10:30am

Westmoreland services

I spend a lot of time motorway driving, & IMHO, Westmoreland services are the finest, most scenic pit stops in England.

December extravagance

We are off to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. Will be there over Christmas and New Year. Very expensive holiday destination that has been a dream for a number of years. Will have taken around 16 months to save for so hope it lives up to expectations.

California

Mrs Umpire, the junior Umpires and I have just got back from 17 days in California: San Francisco, Carmel, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and LA.

A quite superb holiday, marred only very slightly by the fact that Highway 1 (the Pacific Coast Highway) is currently closed by a massive landslip just south of Big Sur, meaning that we had to go inland rather than driving down the coast. Even that had its up-side as it took us through the heart of Steinbeck country, tying in nicely with a current GCSE reading of his Of Mice and Men.

A wonderful holiday, in a wonderful part of the world.

Same 'ole,same 'ole.

Same as last year and the ten years before. The summer will be spent emptying bedpans and commodes, drying tears and patiently explaining that my Dad is not outside gardening but actually died over two years ago. A little painting will be sandwiched in here and there, the odd book will be read and a lot of music will be listened too. All within the confines of the Hovel.
I sincerely hope you all have a marvellous time wherever you are going, whatever you are doing, with whomever you are with. Happy trails my friends. Have a pint or two for me.

I have just been to the Isle Of Rona.

Two people live there. No shops, pubs or stuff to do. There was a heatwave, we saw puffins, seals, sea eagles and a lot of deer. Also a lot of ticks, but you cant have it all.

Later on we camp in South Penquite Farm, in Bodmin Moor in Cornwall. A splendid place.

I'll see your Scottish island and raise you

Having had a few magical holidays on Colonsay, we are venturing to the outer Hebrides this time, to Lewis in fact. If you can get there in the brief window when the midges are looking the other way there is no more beautiful place on God's Earth than the Western Isles. And amazingly the sun does shine some of the time.

0
David Hepworth | 2 May 2011 - 8:16pm

Midge Ire...

Hailing from the West of Scotland as I do, and having holidayed almost exclusively in a zone stretching from Campbeltown to Ullapool for most of my life, I must admit I have been drawn inexorably eastwards in recent years, specifically to the East Neuk of Fife, and even more specifically to what Peter Irvine, the author of the daddy of all Scottish guidebooks Scotland the Best called 'magical Elie'.

The midge, or as we like to call it, the midgie, has been in large part responsible for this, although I feel incredibly guilty about my betrayal. The west coast of Scotland has a special atmosphere, no doubt about it. It's the islands that make the difference...

1
DougieJ | 2 May 2011 - 10:44pm

April and May are the best times in Scotland.

The weather is often tame, the midges are not yet out in force. I have never been to Lewis, but it is on my list...

0
ganglesprocket | 3 May 2011 - 10:12am

Mrs Cues and I have just returned from a weekend in Bute

Staying at the marvellous boutique B & B that is "Munros" in Port Bannatyne. We went there to take in a few days walking on the islands long distance footpath, the "West Island Way" (did you see what they did there?). But a combination of heatwave and jazz festival meant rather more time was spent in saloon bars then was intended.

I'm from Glasgow and I'm almost ashamed to say this is only the 2nd time I've ever been on the Island - it's only an hour from us for goodness sake - but I'll be back. The pace of life just seemed so relaxed and friendly. In no small part due to the many folk from Enlgandshire who seem to run all of the pubs/post offices/shops/garden centres/B & B's with charm, imagination and commitment. Well done everyone!

0
BernkastelCues | 3 May 2011 - 9:08pm

Knoydart (August) and Crail (October) for us this year

We went to Colonsay last year and then to Islay - both magical places and pretty midge-free. Lewis was the year before, in a B&B on Uig beach, where the Lewis chessmen were found. One of the great beaches of the world. Lewis is terrfic for pre-history fans too - more stone circles than you can shake a stick at.

Looking forward to Knoydart - even though it's on the mainland, you can't get there by car, only by boat or a very long walk.

The town so nice

they named it twice. We're a small gang going to New York for our first time.

0
Kjell | 2 May 2011 - 10:26pm

Ah, I'm envious.

I love NYC; could never tire of it. Make sure you get out into the boroughs, though - don't just stay on Manhattan.

Last time, Mrs Bob and I stayed in a hostel in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Not recommended from a luxury/facilities/basic standard for human habitation standpoint, but really fun. We were skint. As well as helping show us how New Yorkers really live, it also left the indelible image of an ancient obese naked shitting man seared onto my retinas, as he was using the toilet - unlocked - when I came blundering in one time.

On the plus side, the hostel didn't have a canteen, so just gave you a breakfast voucher for the diner on the corner. PROPER New York breakfast. Amazing.

Good times.

0
Bob | 2 May 2011 - 10:33pm

NYC

We're staying long enough to hopefully venture a little outside of the main island.

I hope to avoid your retina-destroying experiences by having picked a cheap hotel with en-suite bathroom, but I am planning on eating my way across the city.

0
Kjell | 3 May 2011 - 4:54pm

Sounds like...

...the best of good plans! I ate my body weight in pretzels last time out. And let me tell you, that's a lot of pretzels. There was a pretzel cart just outside the Guggenheim that seemed to me to do the best ones, but I imagine it's moved on or changed hands or something. I have no idea how long the hot dog and pretzel guys hang on to their pitches.

0

Done the skiing for the year. It was dire.

A poor season in the Alps. Oh well.

Nose back on the grindstone to pay for the next excursion. We'll be doing the Mark Warner thing again come August. Middle-class Butlins. Corsica, I hope. Lovely scenery and I feel relaxed there. Lots of quality childcare so Jr gets as fine a holiday as mum and dad, high PLU quotient so lots of good conversation, decent wine, maybe a guitar to borrow. I'll be happy.

So, what have I missed while I've been away. And don't say Royal wedding. There was probably more coverage there than there was here. They were mad for it.

0
Five-Centres | 3 May 2011 - 11:10am

Ooh, where did you go for records?

I was in NY about 18 months ago and completely fell in love with Greenwich Village.

There was one shop, Rebel Rebel on Bleecker Street, which was like being inside the mind of John Peel. They also had tons of back issues of UK music magazines, including some old rag called The Word.

0
Joe R | 3 May 2011 - 11:28am

Yes!

Run by a funny and very helpful camp man. You're right, it was packed with stuff to the rafters. Thank God Mrs FC likes having her nails done.

Went to tons of shops, and that one, stricly speaking is on the edge of the swanky West Village.

Also went to My Generation, Bleecker Street Records, one near the amazing Strand bookshop, and many, many more.

0
Five-Centres | 3 May 2011 - 1:07pm

It's the only record shop

I've gone into, bought a load of stuff, stepped out onto the pavement, and immediately gone back in and bought more.

Don't think I went to My Generation but definitely gave Bleecker Street Records a look too. IIRC, I was marvelling at just how much stuff they had... and then I realised there was a downstairs too.

Touring The States, don'tcha know

Photobucket

Finally, my first full rock'n'roll tour of the US at the age of 46. Of course it was supposed to be as frontman for my own band that this happened, not as merch seller, box carrier, relief driver and general hinderance to m'verygoodfren' David Ford.

New York, Boston, Philly, Asbury Park NJ, DC, then an almighty dash across country to Dallas and Austin, with a quick stop off at Sun Studios in Memphis.

I am more excited than a very excited thing.

My summer has been hijacked this year

...in the best possible way. My adored little sister (yes, she's 32, but she'll always be my baby sister) is getting married at the end of July.

We normally rent a big house, somewhere in England, in the summer with friends, but all potential holiday dates clash with the wedding. It's even the same weekend as Camp Bestival, which is our normal Summer festival jaunt. So, I thought, never mind, we'll go to Latitude this year, and then what weekend does my sister book her hen weekend for...?!

Hey, I'm not complaining as I'm so looking forward to my sister's wedding, it's going to be utterly ace. And she's asked me to make the wedding cake. All 12 layers and 3 tiers of it, so I'm going to be busy busy the week before.

AND, my best buddy is coming down from Yorkshire to London for a week in July, so it will be wonderful to spend some time with her & her kids.

We could potentially go away in August - my mum lives in France for some of the year so we could go and see her - but I put the passports away somewhere "safe" last July and still can't find them. I'm sure they'll turn up though. Any day now. Aaaaaany day now.

6
Hannah | 3 May 2011 - 12:05pm

They're always

in the last place you look.

I found an expired credit card in my copy of Martin Amis's Money once, and remembered I'd put it there so I wouldn't forget it.

0
Captain Underpants | 3 May 2011 - 12:33pm

Yeah.

Instead of putting them back in the same place, I thought "I know! Let's find a REALLY safe place".

I shall go and check my copy of Martin Amis' Travel Documents* and see if I've done something similar.

*this book might not exist outside the confines of my brain

0
Hannah | 3 May 2011 - 9:04pm

Assign a couple of brain cells to recalling where you put them and when you wake up in the morning, you'll have an answer.

The answer will be that you still haven't a clue.

UK & USA

Off to a posh refuge (well it better be posh for that dosh!) in Dorset soon for a week. I like UK holidays because these days, with Internet connections, reliable cars etc, you can just go, and sort yourself out when you get there.
Then at the end of the summer, when the children have gone back to school but when there's still some baseball on, we're off to the States for a shufty round a few civil war battlefield sites and the spot the Wright Brothers first flew as well as a couple of days in DC. Not got anything booked yet... the possibility of BA strike action is delaying our decision (it's BA or Virgin and we would rather go for BA cos Terminal 5 is a relatively relaxed calm way of starting a holiday).

0
JohnW | 3 May 2011 - 1:12pm

Absolutely.

"I like UK holidays because these days, with Internet connections, reliable cars etc, you can just go, and sort yourself out when you get there."

I must admit, I do always like to sort myself out after I've arrived at a hotel..

Lenny Law | 3 May 2011 - 5:07pm

USA

Was moaning to my Mum about worries for jobs & recession earlier this year, but she was adamant that if we had savings, we should forget all that and just do something amazing that we would remember, so ...

... fly drive from Denver, to the Badlands/Blackhills (injuns!), across Wyoming/Montana via the Devils Tower (Mr Mandy's already playing with his mashed potato), Jellystone (before she destroys us all), Jackson, a bit of Utah (dinosaurs) and back to Denver through the Colorado Rockies - in a convertible.

Not until August, but already starting to choose the soundtrack and books.

4
millymollymandy | 3 May 2011 - 1:43pm

I agree... go

A few years ago we were trying to decide between an exploring holiday in the States or a restful fortnight in Cornwall. When we realised that the choice was Should we go to Texas or Cornwall, all of a sudden the choice was easier. We came back knackered but we'd had a ball. The Alamo in San Antonio, The Cadillac Ranch in Amerillo, Buddy Holly's glasses in Lubbock, the grassy knoll in Dallas, yer actual Apollo mission control in Houston we even managed to fit in a drive in movie. It's my favourite state and I hope we'll go back someday.

0
JohnW | 3 May 2011 - 2:23pm

of course

yer mum's right, as per.

0
gaz | 3 May 2011 - 6:03pm

Sounds breathtaking

Wyoming and Montana are on my to do list - would love to go on a ranching holiday ideally but Devils Tower would be intriguing too. Agree with your mum, saving for a worst case scenario is a waste of time - your savings would never go as far as you want them to and trust in fate. Devil's Tower

is great - it takes just over an hour to walk all the way round. We had just finished when there was a massive thunderstorm.

If you plan it well, it is possible to do Crazy Horse, Mt Rushmore, Deadwood and Devil's Tower in the same day - and even throw in the geographical centre of the US in Belle Fourche. And the sculpture garden of the PotUSs in Lead (next to Deadwood), which we missed.

Don't miss Little Big Horn if you're passing that way (I think you may be close, from the itinerary you give). Grand Teton Natonal Park is much prettier than Yellowstone (the spectacular parts of Yellowstone are separated by miles and miles of slow-moving traffic, passing through a landscape of burnt-out trees). If you have time for a detour to Aspen, do go - it's lovely, as are the Maroon Bells, nearby.

PeteWingrave | 19 May 2011 - 1:38pm

Excellent recommendations

Thanks for all of those - they all look do-able. I agree that Grand Teton looks prettier that Jellystone (sorry, that's compulsory) so we've got a couple of nights in Jackson to explore. I've spotted that they do guided photography day tours in Jellystone, which look like a better bet than just following the rest of the cars, wondering what you're supposed to be looking at.

The standard tour itinerary took us back from Jackson across Wyoming via Laramie, which sounded good until I used Google Street View to spot that it was miles of desolate highway, filled with trucks trying to get across Wyoming as quickly as possible. Hence, the detour via Utah and the pretty bit of Colorado. Will try and fit in a detour to Aspen on your recommendation.

Anyone else planning a driving holiday, I'd now always recommend Google Street View combined with TripAdvisor - definitely worth knowing what you're letting yourself in for.

Thanks again!

They're Top tips

Street view has often been invaluable when booking hotels. A couple of years ago in Dallas we were looking for a hotel that we could easily walk to the baseball park from. We thought we'd found one until we tried the route on Streetview, it turned out to have a few strictly car only junctions on the route so dismissed it and stayed someone nicer because we would have to drive anyway.
Our roadtrips have also been made a lot lot easier since we bought the US maps for our sat-nav. Driving out of an airport hire car lot and finding your first hotel is so much easier when you've first looked at streetview and you're using a familiar sat-nav (programmed with the address in the comfort of your own living room) especially after an early rise and a long flight.

JohnW | 21 May 2011 - 5:12pm

Another great tip about the sat-nav

I'll get the latest US maps before we go - like the idea of programming it up with the hotels in advance, and I guess I could always add the various sights we might want to see.

Just don't tell Mr Mandy - he always says he "wants to be spontaneous", but then stands around looking lost and asking me where we should go. I called his bluff last holiday though. After a couple of day trips where I couldn't give him any suggestions about where we could go or what there was to do, I now have permission again to get organised in advance. (I normally enjoy the planning more than the holiday.)

BTW JohnW, visiting Mission Control would be Mr Mandy's idea of the perfect holiday. If we ever make it to Houston, I'll be sure to post here for your tips.

Yet another road trip tip

Anyone that has ever spent a long time on Interstates will know that it doesn't take long before you tire of US radio (once the novelty wears off). These days most US hire cars seem to have an auxiliary socket on the radio (often in the arm rest - nowhere near the radio) so we (OK it's me) now always pack a short, 50 pence, jack to jack lead so that we can plug in an ipod.

JohnW | 22 May 2011 - 8:31am

Mission Control

It's amazing (or perhaps not) how often the old (classic) mission control room appears on television and film. It's even stranger to see it when you've actually been there. Put it on your list and be patient. I first went to Houston in 1992, the old mission control was being used for a shuttle flight so it was closed to visitors. I finally got back there in 2008, it's now a museum piece so visitors are allowed in all the time and worth the 16 year wait.

JohnW | 22 May 2011 - 8:32pm

And still the great tips keep coming - ta v. much!

I had wondered re plugging an mp3 player/phone into a car stereo. Will definitely check this out - just think of the fun I can have all summer devising playlists.

I tend to put the blame on to Mr Mandy but I'll admit I'm also a not-too-closet astro-junkie, so seeing yer'actual Mission Control, which I've seen in so many old black and white film clips would be a thrill for me too. I've had the chance to talk to Charlie Duke (cap comm 11) and Jack Lousma (cap comm 13) and I'd love to see where they had "a bunch of guys about to turn blue". The one I'd really love to hear would be Gene Krantz but I don't think he's been over to the UK for any talks, so I'll just have to wait.

So yes, Houston is now on the list.

A couple of kites

Made a nest in a big old pine tree in my backyard. It`d be lovely to make a few fotos of the whole family and watching (standing still for hours, etc)the chicks is my idea of a very relaxing escapade. If the things works all right I'll put some snapshots here, as long as anyone is interested.

Two and a half holidays

Holiday 1: Week in Skiathos. Will be there for my 40th.

Holiday 2: Annual trip to Rhodes. Love it.

Holiday 0.5: Working in Gibraltar for a week at the end of this month. Kind of a holiday as it's bound to be sunnier, and I'll be surrounded by monkeys and stuff, which sounds terribly exciting and scary at the same time, especially as I'll be in a suit most of the time. Suit + sunshine + monkeys. What a mixture.

Nasalhair | 3 May 2011 - 5:25pm

Gibraltar

Long time since I was in Gib, always had a good time there.

If you go to the hole in the wall, say hello to Charles for me.

Thank you.

Go east young man...

oh, odd double post...

Go east young man...

Honest Man is rather partial to the Eastern Bloc and soviet states both former and current, and I am happy to go anywhere new (there's nowhere I don't want to go in the world really) so we are thinking about Belarus, Lithuania and Kaliningrad.

Last time we went East, to Ukraine, I was wildly excited about sleeper trains, an ideal that lasted about 3 hours into the first night of being shaken awake every few minutes as the train passed over elderly points!

Still, I love a bit of adventure and if I can get a nap then it's fine...

Aside from that we will visit family on the Isle of Wight, and in Yorkshire and Bristol.

Em | 3 May 2011 - 6:38pm

Oh well

By now I should be into my first full week in Japan. This week would have been visiting Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto & Hiroshima and next week would have been Tokyo Disneyland. The intervention of a terrible natural disaster and radiation plant meltdown has meant the trip has been postponed. So instead It looks like 2 weeks In Orlando in September, meeting up with friends to celebrate the Florida Project that opened 40 years ago this coming October.

1
Beany | 3 May 2011 - 6:41pm

Hope you make it

to Japan in the future, assuming you haven't been there before. I spent a year there a long time ago & it's pretty easy to get around and the temples, gardens, traditional restaurants and old shops in Kyoto are not to be missed. If you want to see tacky Japan though, go to Beppu on kyushu island and pay a visit to the Hinkokan sex museum which re-defines weidness. Not for the kids though.

0
Francis Barry-Walsh | 4 May 2011 - 11:18am

I will

I have friends over there. I spent 2 weeks there in 2005, staying at the Tokyo Disneyland hotel and blowing my bonus. It was the best holiday we ever had and also ventured into Tokyo itself and up as far as the coach goes on Fujisan. This was to be a solo pilgramage to see the real Japan.

0
Beany | 4 May 2011 - 1:30pm

I was supposed to be there too

But New York was a excellent last minute subsitute.

I'm off to sunny.... England!

As I live in Denmark, I spend practically all my holidays in England, to be more specific: Liverpool. Used to live there a year ago, so love going back to see friends and get a dose of my second home :-)
Going for a few days at the end of May, and then a full 10 days in August for the International Beatleweek festival... love the mayhem and all the people AND of course the music :-)

Also going to a smaller festival here in Denmark in June, only lasts for two days, but it has got some killer acts like Elbow, Suede, Vaccines and local Tina Dickow!

0
missIda | 3 May 2011 - 8:01pm

Sounds like a good excuse

for a mini mingle with the NW Massive. Our next meeting is in Liverpool on May 20th but we also do impromptu gatherings at the drop of a hat.

0
Beany | 4 May 2011 - 10:40am

mingle

Well, unfortunately I won't be over until Wednesday 25, so will miss the mingle by a few days :-( Hopefully I'll be able to attend another one :-)

London

for a week in June, starting with Jerry Seinfeld at the O2. Other than a couple of work trips, this'll be my first time in the capital since a family holiday when I was a teenager. Looking forward to it.

0
stuartpwilson | 3 May 2011 - 9:16pm

Enjoy

We live near enough London to make it a regular destination for gig going and we often nip down on a Saturday, park in Camden and get the tube around. But a few years ago the FPO suggested we stay there for a week. It was excellent, make sure you work out what the best way to use London Transport before you go and you'll have the freedom of the city.

Oyster Cards

are essential for London travel

0
davebigpicture | 7 May 2011 - 9:21pm

5 day pass

Can't you get those go anywhere for five days passes that are aimed at tourists anymore? If you can, they may be better than an oyster especially as oyster cards require a deposit. It'll all be on the tfl website

Change of plan

We had sort of planned to go back to Turkey, having enjoyed it last summer, but nothing was arranged as I was very likely to be made redundant in April. In the event, the redundancy hasn't happened (although I'm on a month's trial in a new role) and we really can't afford to go abroad. So we're thinking of a cottage in South Cornwall once the schools breakup in late July, but we may have left it a bit late as they all seem to be booked up....

0
Neil Jung | 3 May 2011 - 10:30pm

We're going to Rock this summer.

Finally booked swanky pad in Rock, Cornwall. Really looking forward to it.

1
Neil Jung | 7 May 2011 - 7:27pm

Just back today from North Carolina

I had 9 days in the States for 4 days off work; good eh? We visited Charlotte on Easter Sunday (pretty well shut), spent a night in Boone, 2 in our favourite mountain hangout Blowing Rock, and 4 nights camping at Merlfest www.merlfest.org which was fantastic

After 9 days of too much alcohol, US supersized food and not a great deal of sleep I am now seriously in need of a holiday. I'l be trying to keep a low profile at work for the rest of this week

Can't really call it 'nice'

but at the end of the month we are off to Auschwitz and the Wieliczka Salt Mine

0
Bogart | 5 May 2011 - 10:27pm

Been to Auschwitz myself ....

... and I can honestly say it was one of the most harrowing days of my life. Birkenau, down the road, is even worse. I've never believed in ghosts but there was something about that place that chilled my soul. It's a lesson for us all.

1
Johnny Topaz | 6 May 2011 - 10:32pm

I was there mid winter

In some serious hiking clothes... you wouldn't want to be there underfed, overworked and wearing pyjamas. Very moving and very cold.

0
clivetemple | 19 May 2011 - 2:21pm

You off anywhere nice?

As a British ex-pat domiciled since 2001 in a small village in western Norway, I only have to step out of my front door to "go somewhere nice", but my good lady and I are travelling 'oop north' to Trondheim in June where our younger son's band is through to the finals of the excellently-named (if you are English, I mean) Ungdoms Kulturmønstering - a national 'talent' contest that has NOTHING whatsoever to do with Idol or Norway's Got Talent or anything of that sort. Then, a 10-day tour of England to visit family and friends (and, I hope, take in one or two gigs en route). Early August my rockin' good lady and I are abandoning our offspring to get our middle-aged rocks off at the excellent Øya Festival in Oslo. Really looking forward to seeing the reformed Pulp, Explosions in the Sky, Fleet Foxes and (gasp!) Aphex Twin. It's worth living in Norway!!!

Oh yeah

Cote D'Azur for us, staying in Nice. Hope to visit Monte Carlo. Hope to see how the glitterati live, you know. Relaxing and people watching. Enjoying the summer sun walking along the Promenade de Anglais. The Maserati Quattroporte is only a lottery win away...Anyone been there, what's it like? Can't wait.

I have

Several times. It's posh ... in an old world way. Watch the film 'Ronin' - the car chase takes place around the streets of Nice. I managed to pick out the place I stayed. You'll love it.

Cambodia & Vietnam

I've been watching Gordon Ramsey's new series, so I'm looking forward to tucking in to deep fried spiders, washed down with a nice glass of Vodka & still beating snake heart. Yummy!

Various Bastide Villages...

... which always sounds like a terrible thing to say about a place, if you say it in an English accent.

Fortified southern French villages basically, one of which houses my in-laws on a permanent basis and the extended family semi-regularly. This year we're all descending en masse for the in-laws' wedding anniversary, and occupying pretty much every private rental property in a 20 mile radius while we're at it. Should be gorgeous weather, with lots of good local wine and produce. I won't want to come home again!

5 days in Stockport!

Yep. trains to and from Stockport armed with a list of the great pubs and odd museums. Sadly, the Salt Museum is closed but we will get to see the Anderton Boat Lift and there will be a day out in Buxton. I knew I'd never convince you...
