Yes indeed...

I won't be flogging out for the bells and whistles version, but some remastered CDs would do very nicely thank you very much.

I'll stick ...

.. with my original Rough Trade vinyl.

Lovely

but I only own one box set (The Jam) and I waited until it was a reasonable price. I'm not tight but I'm not paying that for stuff I've already got or can pick up in the 2 for £10 rack at HMV. Remastered? Does it really make that much difference?

The Price

of the cd only box seems reasonable enough, as these things go.

Ah

you mean this one http://www.rhino.co.uk/store/products,the-smiths-complete-cd-boxset_3976... I didn't follow the link to the individual products. Yes it does appear good value and if Patrick says it will be worth it then maybe I'll dip in.

What do I know?!

It's always a gamble with these remastered jobbies... but I do think there's room for improvement. Plus I'm a big fan of vinyl replica sleeves so that will be good too. Plus I just like wasting money on things I've got already.

I think these do have the potential to be a lot better...

as the currently available CDs just sound a bit flat to me and lack punch.

Dave, Dave....

open goal missed:

"Remastered? What difference does it make?" :-)

I don't know..

..but I'll be stroking my chin and pretending that to my finely tuned, sensitive ear it does. Just like I did in 1984 when I pretended to be hearing all sorts of nuances in the music and the lyrics that were beyond lesser mortals.

should have buffed up

the dvd content ..completed the peel sessions (so the peel session version of "london" remains in limbo) and done 12" singles (plus hand in glove 7"), not 7"s...oh..and got me to do the cover...
i fear i will buy

'Wonderful Woman'...

...is available on the 2cd version of The Sound of the Smiths.

0
Paolo Meccano | 28 July 2011 - 1:25pm

Absolutely right...

...all the more odd that it's not in a "complete" Smiths box set! (along with a few others)

0
jezk | 28 July 2011 - 2:01pm

On the quiet...

...the "just the cd's" box for £35 is a bit of a steal-all 8 albums including Rank and the 3 compilations. And a few 12" only bsides (Wonderful Woman?) are missing from them all, even the £250 one.

0
jezk | 27 July 2011 - 10:29pm

certainly

there is room for a 2CD/LP of the unavailable b-sides, peel sessions, demos and unreleased mixes...some of the stuff buried is quite astounding...
and i'm sure will see the light of day..i heard johnny had re-mastered additional material..or maybe i dreamt it...

Not much imagination went into naming the box set!

If they still had a sense of humour they'd have called it "Re-issue, Re-package, Re-evaluate the songs" and included an Extra track and a tacky badge.

Dr Volume | 27 July 2011 - 10:47pm

If the squillion quid box set packaging looked like this...

then I would buy it.

2
Patrick Crowther | 27 July 2011 - 11:17pm

if it was made out of meat

I'd eat it

You get an idea

Of what it's going to sound like from that Sound of the Smiths Double! Same remastering work!
