Xmas TV highlights

Olthwaite's picture

I trust I'm not the only person on here who highlights Christmas TV highlights in the Radio Times or other listings mags.

Television is still a key part of Christmas for me, if only to drown out the post-sprout trumping and crackle of purple Quality Street wrappers.

But I wonder if TV is becoming less important for some over Christmas, what with computer games such as Call of Nature, or whatever the young people play these days.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the Les Dawson doc, Ben Elton on 80s Comedy (he's very quiet over Cameron isn't he?) and Come Dine With Me with Sean Hughes and Duncan Norvelle.

Are Le Donk and Scor-Zay-Zee and the Pixar film Ratatouille worth watching? Is the Doctor Who Xmas Special going to be good this year for a change and not the usual mawkish tripe? What are your highlights?

Radio Times

I'm told that the new 'privatised' Radio Times only goes up to New Years Eve, or is this just vicious rumour?

It's not a conspiracy

The TV mag double issue dates this year are from December 17th to December 30th. It's just the way it's worked out. It's happened before. Last year, for example.

Next year will probably be 22nd December to 3rd of Jan or something along those lines.

Anyway, all week one issues will be on sale from December 23rd this year, so that'll be well in time for all your New Year listings.

Five-Centres | 15 December 2011 - 12:36pm

I remember

The old Radio Times doing that now you say, which meant we didn't have a clue what we were going to watch on New Years Day as our local newsagent was closed in the week between Christmas and then. The horror of that to a ten year old!

SimonL | 15 December 2011 - 2:23pm

Downton Abbey

It's got its knockers, but I've seen the Xmas one and it's a corker.

Other than that, most of what you mentioned really. The retro stuff. Don't bother with the Royal Bodyguard,. God bless David Jason but it's total tosh.

Off the Xmas Doctor Who screening tonight, and by all accounts its rather good.

1
Five-Centres | 15 December 2011 - 12:34pm

Downton Abbey has knockers?

I'm going to watch that then. Not enough of 'em since Benny Hill fell out of favour.

2
Leedsboy | 15 December 2011 - 12:39pm

Benny Hill

He would have called it Knickers Downton Abbey. I suspect.

3
Beezer | 15 December 2011 - 10:33pm

Theres some Dickens on, is there not?

Always like a bit of Dickens at Chrimbo. Great Expectorations with Ray Winstone if memory serves. I also love a ghost story in that 'dead' time between Christmas and new year. I don't know if anything is scheduled but an adaptation of something by MR James would be good.

0
Steerpike | 15 December 2011 - 12:37pm

I trust that the Ben Elton programme...

...on '80s comedy will be an hour-long apology?

4
Paolo Meccano | 15 December 2011 - 12:49pm

Ratatouille?

Loved it.

0
Sven Garlic | 15 December 2011 - 1:05pm

seconded

it passed me by in the cinema, but it's a little corker of a movie.

0
ivan | 15 December 2011 - 1:32pm

thirded

and I'm not much of a cartoon fan.

0
Colin H | 15 December 2011 - 3:39pm

As a child

I would lie on the floor with the double issue Radio Times and a red biro and circle my viewing for two glorious chocolate filled weeks of laziness.
I would make sure I had enough blank VHS cassettes to cover any clashes and also mark down where I would most likely need to run upstairs to watch the black and white as my parents may want to watch something else.
Now I barely switch the thing on and this year I will be in Prague so I won't catch any of it. Amen to that.

jimmyshoes01 | 15 December 2011 - 1:49pm

Just don't have time to watch

Christmas TV at Christmas. Much Sky+ing this year I suspect as we'll be flying around the country as well as hosting family for part of the Christmas week.

If there's Dickens it'll be recorded. I won't need to worry about the films so much.

It would be nice to watch something that is:

a) funny
b) new
c) for all the family to enjoy

but that combination seems ever less present on the box these days.

0
Ahh_Bisto | 15 December 2011 - 2:19pm

all I need to know

is when the Gene Wilder Willy Wonka is on. Gonna watch that with Vorgonito...a little family tradition to be passed on...

0
Vorgongod | 15 December 2011 - 2:42pm

A whole new generation ...

... creeped out by the Oompa Loompas.

0
Gatz | 15 December 2011 - 3:01pm

...and by

chickens being decapitated in the psychedelic tunnel of horror.

0
Ahh_Bisto | 15 December 2011 - 4:39pm

Oh gosh yes!

I think I'll have to distract him for prettyuch the whole Boatride scene. Good catch gravyman!

0
Vorgongod | 15 December 2011 - 5:18pm

Good day sir

I said, good day!

I do like Tim Burton version of the book thou. Deep and Christopher Lee are great as is Mr O'Riley from The Builders ep of Fawlty Towers.

It just isn't deep in my heart as the Wilder Wonka

0
DogFacedBoy | 15 December 2011 - 7:38pm

And the sweet shop guy

He's just the wrong side of sinister.

0
Lando Cakes | 15 December 2011 - 7:15pm

On demand viewing

I wonder when it will be that TV scheduling is geared solely towards live events, ie when we will all be calling up programmes on demand as and when we want.

Meanwhile, I do love the Xmas edition of the RT.

Doctor Who.

That's yer lot, apart from Carols From King's. A cathedral-centred childhood means I need a good dose of High Church C of E choral singing, cassocks, smells and bells at Christmas, and seeing as we're with the (nonconformist/atheist) in laws this year, I have to have it televised.

Telly's not a massive part of my Christmas, but Doctor Who is a must. I thought that the Gambon one last year was amazing, and there's been a Doc-shaped hole in my life since the series ended. I can't wait.

0
Bob | 15 December 2011 - 3:05pm

Bob...

...never mind the cassocks.

I'm sorry, I just had to say it.

Anyway... I'll probably follow Fice-Centres' advice and watch the Christmas Downton - though I avoided the second series as it was apparently plumbing the depths of self-parody.

I haven't seen Dr Who in ages cos I just got fed up with the absurd, look-how-clever-this-is narrative arcs and - the deal breaker for me - the fact that the banging and crashing and 'background' music bombast was drowning out most of the dialogue. I just can't be doing with that.

Isn't there meant to be a 'Mystery Of Edwin Drood' adaptation on at some point?

0
Colin H | 15 December 2011 - 3:44pm

Edwin Drood

is not until the second week of Jan.

0
Five-Centres | 15 December 2011 - 4:13pm

You are indeed...

...Alison Graham!

0
Colin H | 15 December 2011 - 4:20pm

Drood ?

Will it come to an abrupt end ?

0
Slick | 15 December 2011 - 5:09pm

Dickens clearly knew the maxim....

....'leave them wanting more'.

0
Colin H | 15 December 2011 - 5:17pm

The Gruffalo's Child

Must see at 6.30pm on Christmas Day for the kids and then Downton Abbey at 9pm.

Nothing else is pencilled in yet.

0
Uncle Wheaty | 15 December 2011 - 7:10pm

Faves

Are "It's a wonderful life" and/or "White Christmas" on?

0
Twangothan | 15 December 2011 - 8:08pm

Call of Nature,

that deserves an up arrow

0
Sour Crout | 15 December 2011 - 10:25pm

England, Their England

A G McDonnell's jovial novel about the English is being dramatised on Radio 4. I think on Christmas Eve.

Ian Hislop takes the part of Hodge. His first acting role.

The novel is a favourite of his and he championed it in a BBC Hundred best books mullarkey a few years ago.

Might be worth a listen.

0
Beezer | 15 December 2011 - 10:37pm

Ratatouille

I have mixed views on this.

It's another stunning Pixar creation. Witty and visually elegant.

But it's about a rat. And other rats. A Rat. Rats. Vermin.

I hate rats. Therefore I didn't give two hoots about the main character despite all his travails.

EDIT: It would appear I don't have mixed views at all then.

0
Beezer | 15 December 2011 - 11:09pm

If you pretend

that he's just a big, grey hairy mouse, it's much better. We even call it Mousatouille round ours.

0
Leedsboy | 15 December 2011 - 11:46pm

Yes, but what the hell...

..is it called round at Mousey's place?

0
Colin H | 16 December 2011 - 12:07am

I bet

Uncle Monty will be tuning in though. I hear he holds rats in the highest esteem.

'How Not To Live Your Life' Xmas Special

and 'Dr Who' Xmas Special.

That's about it.

I hope one of the main channels has got 'World's Strongest Man' this year, it used to be the TV highlight of the post-Boxing pre-New Years Day week.

0
kidpresentable | 16 December 2011 - 2:11pm

Thanks...

for bringing How Not To Live Your Life to my attention, I wouldn't have known otherwise. Definitely, the current best UK sitcom for anyone with a childish sense of humour.

0
doomah | 16 December 2011 - 2:44pm

Totally agree,

it's great fun and there aren't many good sitcoms around at the moment.

kidpresentable | 20 December 2011 - 8:38pm

Christmas double issue

Remember you had to buy both Radio Times AND TV Times in those days? Only time of the year my parents would buy those things. There was something very simple and straightforward about the RT back then. No colour, apart from the cover, newspaper style paper stock, 2 (that's TWO) TV channels to worry about, and a magical radio section that threw up those ghost stories and terrific Christmas programming we just don't seem to get now.

2
Chris | 16 December 2011 - 4:05pm

Telly

I am that rare beast that HATES having the telly on on Christmas Day. Telly can be watched 364 other days of the year, why can't we have ONE day when the telly is not bloody on?

We never had it on when I was a kid, except for Christmas TOTP, but as I got older, the telly went on earlier and earlier. I realise that I am in the minority, so have given up & expect the telly to be put on.

I spent a bit of this AM "doing" the Christmas Radio Times, and my plans boil down to Dr Who (although the Christmas ones have all been rubbish, I think), Carols from Kings Downton, Great Expectations and some the Cukor version of David Copperfield, although I'm, sure I'll watch much more.

I'm really unimpressed by the telly this year.

0
JoLean | 16 December 2011 - 4:16pm

Well, there's really no point...

...in the proper telly channels spending money chasing mass audiences that aren't there any more, is there?

I suspect the New Year programming may turn out to be better.

0
Paolo Meccano | 16 December 2011 - 5:11pm

Got the mag today and I know it's a cliche.....

.....but bl***in' hell, there is nothing on over Xmas!

I'm doing 'Downton Abbey' and (with no Mark Lamarr on Radio 2) a load of Radio 4 Extra Plays and Comedies.
Oh, and I've Sky+ed about ten episodes of 'Top Cat'.

(That Ben Elton thing.....that's a joke, right?)
