Wot no Ariel Bender?

Mott The Hoople have confirmed that they are to reunite and play together for the first time in 35 years, to celebrate their 40th anniversary this year.

The group featuring all original members; Ian Hunter, Verden Allen, Dale Griffin, Overend Watts and Mick Ralphs will play two shows at London's Hammersmith Apollo on October 2 and 3, 2009.

-----
Sad that Ronno couldn't be there to join in with Mott. and what of Ariel Bender? I understand he's been touring as 'Ariel Bender's Mott The Hopple' - the cheeky mare.

oh and start those 'Bowie's gonna show up' rumours now.

Ohhhhh yeah!

The Dead and Mott in one year - it doesn't get any better than that (unless The Faces reunion happens)

I can live without Ronno, Aerial and Morgan Fisher as long as the original line-up is there

stimpy | 8 January 2009 - 5:02pm

Ariel Bender was only ever Ralphs replacement anyway.

Sounds as if they are reproducing the early uncommercial band, rather than the later hit singular version.

Retropath2 | 8 January 2009 - 6:03pm

and so it should be...

but it'll be a shame if they don't play some of the later stuff as well. Wonder what 'Sue & Sunny' are doing in October

stimpy | 8 January 2009 - 7:09pm

Love Mott

but only from 1972 onwards. Strikes me that before then they were pretty clumpy and yet to find their feet. Hit sungular version for me every time. All together now...

'Honaloochie Boogie yeah-'

Please yourselves.

STOP!

I've had enough of this
The pantomime's reversed
I need -you feed
I greed - you bleed
Marionette - I ain't one yet
Teacher's pet - Well you'd better forget it
Marionette - I ain't one yet
Teacher's pet - Go check your stocks and shares
And when the coffin comes make sure there's room for two

You lied - I led
I died -You're dead
Marionette - I ain't one yet
Teacher's pet - You'd better forget it
Marionette - I ain't one yet
Teacher's pet - go check your product
A traitor, deceiver, a groovy disbeliever I thought
A puppet was a thing cheap-taught - No way
Creator, conceiver, romantic love receiver - caught
Who are you
The nerve

I wanna get out, I wanna get out, I wanna get out, I wanna get out, I wanna get
out, AHHHHH!

Through the Looking Glass

James Blast | 10 January 2009 - 2:48am

Aaah, Hereford's finest

They hailed from my home town, you know. I don't think they've even got one of those blue plaque things. They should, you know.

Futurenoir | 8 January 2009 - 7:20pm

I shall play

Thunderbuck Ram and raise a glass to their health.

C'mon lads, what's wrong with the provinces?

Beany | 8 January 2009 - 7:56pm

Joke for fans of Phil Holden

I thought that, following EEC directive 02-474420-10, Motting The Hoople was now illegal.
On a more serious note, I remember seeing Mott supporting Mountain at Redcar Jazz Club, and was overawed by their platform boots.

Freddie Owen | 8 January 2009 - 10:55pm

Did you see the suits and the platform boots?

"Oh dear, oh lord, oh my oh my oh..."

Ian Hunter's Last Word On A MTH Reunion

Ian Hunter's website is usually up to date and has no mention of a reunion. The site includes a Horse's Mouth section where Ian personally answers questions put by fans. His latest response, dated 1st January, to a question about a reunion is:

MTH reunion? Ah - you never know

Is that a straw to clutch at?

Lucky Tiler | 8 January 2009 - 10:58pm

First band I ever saw, at Lancaster University, Nov 1973 supported by Queen...60p to get in...

MarkHagen | 8 January 2009 - 11:27pm

"Tickets for the fantasy were 12 and 6 a time"

I make that 62.5p in the new money, so you got a bargain.

I had tickets for the UK tour which was cancelled when Ian took ill. To my eternal shame, on hearing the news, I sold them at an inflated price to the guy who'd been nagging to buy them off me since it sold out.

They split up shortly afterwards, so I never got to see them. I've waited a long time for this.

Lucky Tiler | 9 January 2009 - 1:37am

I see

that Mott i.e. Not The Hoople, have a live CD out this year on Angel Air. Tracks from 1975/76, including from the gig at Leeds Poly I was at.

Goody...more royalties for me!

Beany | 9 January 2009 - 12:02am

If It Doesn't Happen, Let It Not Be For Want Of Trying

As time goes on it looks increasingly unlikely that the rumour is true. Where it may prove useful though is that it demonstrated the support there would be for such an event.

Maybe one reason they haven't done it yet is the fear that nobody would be interested. Now, I'm sure that the various individuals and websites around MtH get queries about a reunion all the time, BUT, since a lot of people are excited and interested at the same time:

Why don't we all put a query on Ian Hunter's Website about this, and hence demonstrate the level of interest from our little corner of cyberspace at any rate?

I'm off to do mine right now!

Lucky Tiler | 14 January 2009 - 1:42pm

Positive Signs That It Might Be True

Right after my last posting, I went straight to ianhunter.com, and there on the message board is a 588 message thread on this very topic.

What's more, the source appears to be a good one - a comment let slip by Verden Allen himself during a radio interview. There is also talk that those are just the first two dates to commemorate their 40 year anniversary.

I'm now more positive, and more excited than at any point since I first read this, so all I can come up with by way of a MtH lyrics quote is

Wo-oh-oh!
Wo-oh-oh!

Lucky Tiler | 14 January 2009 - 2:04pm

How about a rerecording of Saturday Gigs with a new verse...

"In 2010 we did it all again..."

stimpy | 14 January 2009 - 2:08pm

In 2010 we did it all again..."

We were all such older maybe wiser men
Did you see the beige cardies and the thinning roots?
Oh dear, oh lord, oh my, oh my

DogFacedBoy | 14 January 2009 - 3:19pm

May I refine the 3rd line?

To replicate the rhyming pattern of "did you see the suits and the platform boots", may I suggest:

Did you see the lardies, bald in cardies?

Lucky Tiler | 15 January 2009 - 11:22am

I wanna rewrite

the other line 'older maybe wider men' but that would conflict with the 'lardies' bit

this joke may break up due to artistic differences

DogFacedBoy | 15 January 2009 - 7:02pm

Oh go on then

You can be the impulsive creative one, and I'll be the controlling structured one.

While the box is open, why not change 2010 to 2009?

Lucky Tiler | 15 January 2009 - 11:34pm

Dammit!

Now we have to find a rhyme for 'HMV Apollo'

DogFacedBoy | 15 January 2009 - 11:42pm

How about

"Three times as good as Naboo and Bollo"?

Lucky Tiler | 16 January 2009 - 4:31pm

Or

" 'No reunion!' claims sound increasingly hollow "

Lucky Tiler | 16 January 2009 - 4:32pm

they could always start off with

Where do you all come from

James Blast | 15 January 2009 - 8:09pm

From the horses mouth....

"Just thought you'd like to know the Mott the Hoople reunion IS going to take place on October 2nd & 3rd, 2009 at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo in London. It will be the original members - Mick, Pete, Phally, Buff and me. They've asked our esteemed webmaster, Justin, to formulate a Mott the Hoople site which should be up and running in the near future. Why are we doing it? I can't speak for the others, but I'm doing it just to see what it's like. Short of war, death, famine etc. ...it's ON."

- Ian Hunter

DogFacedBoy | 16 January 2009 - 4:34pm

I'm torn...

I was/am a huge Mott fan and can't decide if I want to go to this.

It could, of course, be another 'Led Zep at the O2' triumph (without the boats, of course) but I really don't want it to be a let down and spoil the memories I have of them from 35 years ago

stimpy | 16 January 2009 - 5:33pm

You're torn? I'll be ripped!

I was a huge fan too, the hair and everything. I never got to see them first time round, so I'm going...

the songs are still good
they'll still be able to perform
even if it was rubbish, that one night couldn't wipe out the legacy we all remember

And of course if you don't go, you'll have to suffer us on here telling you forever after what a great night you missed.

Lucky Tiler | 17 January 2009 - 2:45am

I think

I better start saving for a trip to 'that' London in October

James Blast | 16 January 2009 - 5:48pm

All the way from.....Melbourne

I've got my ticket confirmed and i'm coming all the way from Melbourne Australia for this, i never thought i would see the day!
