World Cup Podcasts

Raymo's picture

Has anybody been listening to any of these? I've been a regular listener of: Alan Davies's Armchair World Cup, Baddiel & Skinner's Absolute Radio Podcast, and the daily ones from the BBC & the Guardian.

The biggest disappointment has been the Baddiel & Skinner one. Like Jonathan Ross, John Cleese & many others, they illustrate what happens when comedians - even clever, talented, witty comedians - start earning too much: they become lazy, self-satisfied & unfunny. I had to stop listening to the latest podcast when B & S were heaping abuse on referees (they had no friends when they were little apparently, they come from provincial parts of England & dream of being strong & important, etc., etc.) Talk about an easy target!

In contrast to the witless B & S, Alan Davies is superb. In fact, he is everything they are not: funny, well-informed, observant. Unfortunately, his podcast is only broadcast once a week. The best of the dailies in my opinion has been the Guardian's, with the likeable & articulate James Richardson in charge.

Have there been any good ones that I've missed?

B and S

Very poor and well past their sell by date. Skinner is just a showoff as he is in his dreadful autobiography.

Danny Baker

You might be too late for these, but when Danny Baker was out in South Africa, his podcasts were superb. Obviously, the main format was his normal show, but he was clearly as excited as an 8 yer old to be let loose in South Africa with only a tape deck for company. His tales of getting to the opening ceremony are a joy.

Only problem is that, as a BBC podcast, they don't tend to stick around long so you may have to go hunting for them on the net....

I like Skinner generally, but the B&S world cup ones haven't worked. agree with your choice of the Guardian World Cup one - excellent, informative, entertaining...all you could want.

I loved Baker's 'live from the stadium' sections

a refreshing change to the 'official' commentary :-)

Seconded...

I generally can't be a**ed with football (even the World Cup) but Danny Baker's podcasts have whetted my interest this time - choice of pundits & guests is uniformly great, and I refer you to the comments of m'colleague above - the "live from the stadium" segments were a highlight.

I gave up on Baddiel and Skinner when England went out.....

.....I was struggling to enjoy them beforehand but by that time they sounded totally bored by the concept. I know Skinner was obviously frustrated like all England fans but I actually started turning off a few minutes after each episode started. Really poor quality. Unsubscribed in itunes pretty quickly.

I'm a huge fan of Danny Bakers podcasts but just havent had the time to listen to all his shows - roughly 3 hours a week. With the weekend shows he does it can sometimes take me a week or two to get around to listening but as the World Cup is on they quickly get outdated by the next set of results so i've ended up deleting them from itunes.

Will go back to listening to his Saturday show podcast as from tomorrows show.

I havent bothered with any other World Cup podcasts - overkill. Perhaps I should've ignored B & S and gone for one of the others???

Guardian one was quite good

But I disliked the forced humour and the guffawing audience.

The Football Ramble is very

The Football Ramble is very good.

They run throughout the season but been running with 2 a week throughout the World Cup. Good knowledge and free of the usual football cliches - funny as well

Alan Davies

If you didn't already realise, the Armchair World Cup podcast is a BBC / national team version of It's Up For Grabs Now, the Arsenal* podcast which Alan Davies and friends started doing last year. Assuming it returns next season, it's well worth a listen, regardless of your club loyalty.

*Other League football clubs and their semi-official podcasts are available. Your mileage may vary.
