World cup highlights

clivetemple's picture

Robbie Savage, NZ v Italy... 'There's topless women in the stadium!!!'.

Van Bronckhorst's goal v Uruguay.

Al Jazeera commentator upon spotting a black guy in an England shirt in the crowd against Algeria... 'Looks like England have picked up a bit of local support'.

My favourites

  • South Africa's Siphiwe Tshabalala's goal against Mexico - the first goal of the tournament, and a screamer that sent the South African fans doolally.
  • Danny Baker's appearance on Match of the Day, where in 10 minutes, he showed more wit, passion and eloquence than all the other pundits did throughout the whole world cup. Alan Shearer's bemused face was a joy to behold. (I'm actually guessing it was bemused, as it's easier to read emotion on Amanda Holden's botoxed boat race then it is on Alan's potato-like visage).
  • David Pleat on 5Live when Slovakia's win over Italy saw the Azzurri knocked out: "For sure, for the Italians, it's...Au Revoir."
  • Asamoah Gyan's last-minute winning goal for Ghana v USA. He could have gone down to get the penalty, but kept going and scored a belter.
  • Spain winning last night's final after the Dutch's version of Total Football seemed to mean breaking the record for the total number of fouls in a game. Arjen Robben's despair at the end was particularly heartening, as his petulant moaning and screaming at Howard Webb throughout the game was frankly embarrassing. The little shit.

    Many highlights

However, what made me laugh most was the local pundit here in New Zealand's first words after Spain's victory:
"So, the All Whites are the only unbeaten team in this year's World Cup finals. Result!".

Despite what pundits & journos say, I really enjoyed it all

Rooney - "nice to hear yer own fans boo ya". What a chump he looks now.

The ball - it reminded me of those balls my kids used to have with a bell inside affecting the movement. Some great goals came from it, esp that Brazil one from an impossible angle.

The vuvuzelas - I started to miss them when they weren't as apparent in later games. It will give us all a distinctive memory (like cowbells and Coleman in 74, tickertape in 78, Linekar's wrist bandage in 86, Gazza's tears in 90 etc)

The stadiums - they looked fantastic, though I do wonder what they are going to go with them all now?

The lunchtime games - miss you already.

Uruguay - all their games were great and Forlan may have been shite at Man U but he did what Rooney can only dream about.

    Gazelle

I can't find the exact words, but one golden moment was Steve Wilson describing Gallas as looking like "...a baby gazelle who's just plopped out of its mother's womb trying to stand on its bandy legs."

So perfectly on the line between descriptive genius and Alan Partridge.

is Danny Baker on MOTD on the web anywhere?

I've consulted You Tube, but have drank a blank...any thoughts?

    I watched it on iPlayer

Having turned over not knowing Cap'n Baker was about to come on.
I couldn't find a YouTube clip either: there's a couple of blogs mentioning it, to give you an idea of what went on. By the way, the fact that Danny's predictions were spectacularly wrong only makes it better, in my eyes.

    Carlos Puyol...

It was like watching a Budgie roadie play football with great skill and commitment.

    Patrick Crowther | 12 July 2010 - 3:30pm

    Mark Lawrenson's excrutiating

impersonation of Borat during the Spain v Portugal game. What what he thinking?

A suitable epitaph for the world cup

Having already "bigged up" [oo-er, I wish] Marina Hyde in today's favourite hacks thread, may I commend her characteristically forensic debunking of Sepp Blatter in today's Guardian.
