Working on an album cover

Martin's picture

Is this not one of the worst album covers ever by a major artist? Shockingly banal. Kitsch, in a Donald Trump kind of way. If this CD bombs it deserves it. Shame on you Mr Sprinsteen.

Having seen the midweek numbers

It looks like it's going to the toppermost of the poppermost.

I have come to the conclusion...

...that it's the moon that really makes it.

Can't be the worst album cover by a major artist

Thanks to this one:

I think that's a brilliant cover!

I love the fact that it played with our conception of The Beatles as 'loveable moptops' and forced people to reconsider them. The fact that they're all smiling makes it even weirder.

It's not that bad really

OK so it's not amazing but I don't find it offensive, I really don't see why you're getting so excited.

Anyway, who cares about the cover, the album is brilliant.

Look again

It's hideous. It's really, really bad.
I'm not a Springsteen fan, so I won't have to give it houseroom, but it offended my eyes just by being prominently displayed in HMV.

Covers of CDs

Not of great importance these days. Also there's been worse from Stones, Dylan and others, I would say.

Image has never been a major issue

Image has never been a major issue for Bruce, nor should it be. The end product music wise is what counts and there is some stunniong tracks on this album.

Where's the lad with his fishing rod, lounging on the moon?

Some of the lyrics aren't much better: "Let the light shine through/Let me show you what love can do" is a line that even Teddy Pendergrass might have baulked at. Feel ma lerv!

Still, I haven't heard much of it yet, so maybe it's actually quite good. Although the production on the title track doesn't augur well - what on earth are those bolt-on bits of Showaddywaddy doing in there?

0
Archie Valparaiso | 30 January 2009 - 9:39am

What's up with the production?

0
LOUDspeaker | 30 January 2009 - 11:22am

It sounds like Jeff Lynne on crack

apart from that, it's fabulous.

Archie Valparaiso | 30 January 2009 - 12:00pm

Come again?

Image has never been a major issue for Bruce, nor should it be.

I think Bruce Springsteen's image matters more than just about anybody's.

I meant as far as his

I meant as far as his looks/the way he dresses etc. Apart from Born to run & Born in the USA, the majority of his album covers have been a head shot or portrait.

I'm sure he is more interested on how the messages in his music come across.

alf2019 | 30 January 2009 - 10:53am

Agreed

I was going to say much the same thing. There aren't many A-list rock stars who've maintained the same consistent public image for as long as Bruce has. His image is one thing but perhaps it's fairer to say that his album covers have never been a major issue with him. Or at least if they have, he's got pretty shocking taste!

Since Born in the USA I don't think he's had a memorable album cover and the last few have been particularly bad. In fact I think the new one is an improvement on The Rising, Devils and Dust or Magic. At least it's a move away from orange which has been Bruce's cover colour of choice for a long, long time.

Looking forward to the review in next month's issue. I like the new record but the critics have been so mixed that there's no way of knowing which side of the Word will come down on.

Born To Run & Born In The USA

are both iconic images worthy of their own t-shirts. Even Nebraska and The River (my own fave). This new cover is a bit dismal and will this do? in comparison

Springsteen's image

Has always put me off. Same with Prince.

0
Danny | 30 January 2009 - 1:43pm

What have they done to his forehead?

Seems simultaneouls longer, yet with a thicker late starting thatch. (I am minded that there have been rippling mumurs of a rug recently......)

Retropath2 | 30 January 2009 - 10:30am

Yes, it is a bit poor

It would have been better if Bruce had a nightcap on his head. But I sense the meeting went something like this:

Working on a Dream - Bruce Springsteen

Ponytailed exec 1 - "We need a picture of Bruce looking a bit sleepy, as if he's dreaming."

Ponytailed exec 2 - "How about putting the moon and stars in the background to suggest night-time, i.e. when most of us do our dreaming?"

Ponytailed exec 1 - "Job done! What's next?"

Jeff Lynne's Armchair Theatre

Ponytailed exec 2 - "Let's have Jeff sitting on an armchair!"

Is it available

as a duvet cover?

Hope so

I'd buy one

It looks bad.

Someone got paid to do that. Reminds me of the Rob Grant book "Incompetence" about a time in the future were you can't discriminate against hiring people just because they're useless.

Apologies Dr J. I had a hunch that ...

...something had been mentioned about this already, but I posted late last night and I didn't do my research. Still, one can now marvel at the true awfulness of the image in front of us. I am half expecting a pair of devil's horns to sprout from his head. Where have I seen this image before?

0
Martin | 30 January 2009 - 1:34pm

Great..

....Title, and I´m sure the album is good but, Yeah..the artwork is awful

0
On The Fence | 30 January 2009 - 1:38pm

I just looked at Broooce's website...

and took a peek at all his album covers... and my oh my have there been some shockers. 'Lucky Town' and 'Human Touch' are particularly dreadful, so this new album is only maintaining that fine tradition.

0
Patrick Crowther | 30 January 2009 - 5:26pm

I've got a Colin Blunstone Lp..

..that looks exactly the same.
