Word Podcast 68: show notes

David Hepworth's picture

Show notes for the new podcast, which will be winging its way to subscribers in the next few hours:

You must watch "Heavy Metal Junior", definitely the best half-hour documentary about a pre-teen heavy metal group called Hatred that we've ever seen. "How many of our own songs have we written? We've written about....one."

Here's the late Rick Wright doing his magnum opus "Echoes" with the rest of Pink Floyd at Pompeii in 1971. And below he's clearly impressed with the honour of meeting Mark Ellen and David Hepworth among other luminaries at some VH1 recording in the 90s.

Image

While Mark had his "files" open he found a souvenir of his TV debut, miming the part of a saxophonist in an apparently forgotten Nona Hendryx video in 1979. But then we looked. And it wasn't forgotten. We've found it here.

In Mark Ellen’s house...

...side two of The Band’s Brown album is like the guitar in Spinal Tap that cannot be played, touched or even pointed at.

I thought our esteemed editor looked like

he was auditioning for Showaddywaddy, though didn't get as far as seeing if he had brothel creepers on.

I have that VH1 OGWT special

on tape somewhere and its memorable for Kershaw's laugh, his cans of Kestrel lager, Billy Bragg asking for his single to be played along with a video of a goggle eyed cat and Mark Ellen's telling of his Roy Harper HORA being truncated by a 'SHUT UP' sign which led to group hysterics while Mr H attempted to do a link to Zep video.

Also for the time honoured 'good luck with the record and the tour' to which Robyn H replied 'Oh God, do I have to go on tour now?'

Happy days.....

Whispering Bob

Bob Harris looks just the same as he does now! Is he immortal?

Rockin' Chair

One of the absolute bestest Band songs. Turn that record over, sharpish.

Nona Hendryx

Watching the video, I've only just realised I had her completely confused in my head with Millie Jackson. Am I the only one?

You can't beat...

Who's the chap in the jacket

Next to Hitchcock? I can't place him at all. And don't our esteemed Word brethren look young, even after knocking off 15-odd years? Clean living, was it? Early nights?

Mike Appleton

He used to produce OGWT and did a memorable interview with Robert Plant and Peter Grant when The Song Remains the Same was released.

UNICEF

Bit of a myth that FC Barcelona do the Charity on the shirt thing because they are such wonderful people.
1) The club's rules state that anything on the Shirt must represent Catalonia. No Catalan company Could really afford the kind of money Barça want.
2) What Barça would ask for would make the Man Utd shirt deal look like peanuts. Barça are under the delusion that they are the Biggest club in the world. Not even the biggest club in Spain,
3) Think Barça aren't sponsored ? Look at their kit,More Nike swooshes than a Chav's Wardrobe.
4)The one they won't talk about---Because UNICEF is a Charity Barça get enormous tax breaks due to there so-called Charitable contribution. The amount they give per shirt is minimal but the money they save is very large indeed.
When they decided to do this the club was in financial trouble, and still are ,but those tax breaks really help them. For real charity on shirts see Aston Villa.

Corrected we stand

Being a supporter of MUFC, and therefore thinking that, due to Spanish clubs ownership structures, they can do no wrong (excepting of course the - hem, hem - 'breaks' that Real Madrid get from the Spanish government) I tend to get quite misty eyed about Barca. But yes, of course, they are a massive sporting brand, and as cold eyed and single minded as any other. All be it, owned by all their members...

Oh, and in terms of the 'biggest club in the world', in terms of recognition they're probably up there in the top five, surely?

Good points

Yes Matt, top 5 yes,Number 1 !!! no way Jose or Josep for Barça fans.
Barça believe they are everybody's second favourite team and it's this arrogance I hate.
For any fans out there DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE. Barça are run like a Business and the members can run for president. But it's always the same clique who run and it's always wealthy businessmen. Yes just like footy chairmen in the UK. So the "real" fans know that there's not a lot they can do. Bayern Munich and Dortmund are also Sporting clubs run by the members but why don't the media bang on about them ? They ain't as glamourous that's why.
Barça on the pitch are fantastic (Except they get way too many dodgy decisions go their way) but off the pitch they are Man Utd and Chelsea combined.
FC Europa ,who were the city's third team at one time, recently celebrated their centenary. They wanted to play a Three way Tournament with Barça and Espanyol. Barca demanded over 50,000 euros to turn up and wait for it, send The veterans team.Europa told them to stuff it and played Espanyol for free.
I live in the city and am so glad I support Espanyol. If you hate Man Utd and Chelsea for being arrogant and above the law Welcome to the spanish version.then again ,Real Madrid are just as bad.

Nice insight

and frankly, any team that are up there with Man Yoo and Chelsea in the arrogance stakes will get short shrift here. I didn't realise the UNICEF things was a tax wheeze either - mind you most corporate charity giving is so I am just naive I suppose.

Leedsboy | 21 September 2008 - 10:04pm

Cinicos anonimos

That was then:
FC Barcelona take their case to FIFA to prevent Messi from going to Beijing as a member of the Argentina squad, so that he'd be available to shore up the team for their Champions League qualifier against whichever Dynamo Nohope it happened to be this year. They lose their case. They appeal and lose again.

This is now:
"Barca's very own gold medallist, Leo Messi. . . ."

Archie Valparaiso | 23 September 2008 - 12:44pm

The evidence is piling up

So who represents the true football fan's club of choice in Spain then? Is it Espanyol or are they just Man City to Barca's Man Yoo?

0
Leedsboy | 23 September 2008 - 12:44pm

Go stripy

Atlético de Madrid, Athletic Bilbao, Deportivo Corunna or Real Betis.

You'll suffer, but you can't go wrong.

0
Archie Valparaiso | 23 September 2008 - 12:49pm

Sorted then

Bilbao it is. Any team with a pop art puppy in it's town centre got to be the choice. My Spanish team sits with my German team Munchen 1860 (who got the gig just because they are not Bayern). Now just need an Italian team and I'm done.

That was the best podcast in

That was the best podcast in absolutely ages!

Brian Cleary | 23 September 2008 - 12:38pm

Great podcast...

..but the topic of band credits and royalties was a bit off the mark.
Rick Wright WAS credited for all of his Floyd contributions, but the subject of musos claiming royalties after the fact is a tricky one.
The ways in which a song come into being is a many varied one, in most bands there is one member (somtimes a duo) who contributes the main crux of the song (lyrics and melody) and then invariably the band knocks up an arrangement.Sometimes though the song arrives fully formed bass-lines and all.
For all intents and purposes arrangement is NOT song writing. (If it was, Vanilla Fudge could have claimed royalties for their "dramatic" reworking of "You Keep Me Hanging On")
Sometimes a band member's contribution IS a defining factor to a song becoming a hit, more often not, but these things are often only known after the fact.
As the team touched on, the longest lasting bands get this sorted out early (REM, U2) while others die in a sea of resentment, but the fact is songwriters are notoriously protective of their creations. The last thing they want to hear is the drummer saying "I wrote that drum beat..I want quarter" (I er..speak from experience here)
