Word Podcast 167: Top Of The Pops Special

The Word's picture

ImageAndrew Harrison is joined in the pod by Janice Long and Jude Rogers, where they talk about the BBC's renewal of interest in Top Of The Pops, discover why David Bowie really was different, learn that Janice spent 1976 in a Dutch tent, wonder at that statue of Michael Jackson, and marvel at Jude's new website celebrating the t-shirts of pop.

You can follow this link to get the podcast every week or stream this new episode below.

Excellent stuff

I love the idea of D.Bowie's TOTP dressing room being guarded by two Sumo Wrestlers.
I can't help feeling I should be doing my A-Level revision and waiting for a session from Echo & The Bunnymen whenever I hear the voice of Janice Long...

True

And what a voice it is...

No more about Jude Rogers' upcoming nuptials.

TOTP

For the last couple of years they've been playing TOTP episodes from 1974 onwards on German channel Einsfestival. Dull doesn't even begin to describe it. By December 1976, the arrival of Status Quo and Thin Lizzy seems positively menacing.

And will there be

a version of this podcast with subtitles? Couldn't understand a word...

Just for you a sneek peak

Top podcast as usual

T'was lovely to hear Janice again - like Dr. Volume I feel like I should be doing some school work when I hear her voice. And Jude is great - does she really talk about her wedding that much? Don't think so - and anyway, Andrew asked her about it. It is only a few weeks away; cut her some slack!
And what exactly are messrs Ellen and Hepworth up to that's keeping them both away from the podcast? Any guesses out there?

The FPO and I are getting married in June;

between her, the two girls & Mrs FPO Mum there's virtually no other topic of discussion chez Stimpy at present...

1
stimpy | 13 April 2011 - 9:02am

Congrats and good luck to you

and the future Ms ren.

0
Chris G | 13 April 2011 - 9:06am

Congratulations, Stimpy...

...again, I'd like a post-wedding breakdown of frocks, hair and make-up.

And it'd be nice to hear what the girls and FPO wear, too.

Have a great day.

1
JoLean | 13 April 2011 - 9:47am

Let me add my congratulations, Stimps.

And good luck too to ganglesprocket, getting wed on Saturday.

Thanks all... I feel a bit of a fraud though as

we've been living together for the best part of 20 years :-)

Thought it was good to have

Thought it was good to have a podcast without messrs ellen and hepworth on it for a change

1
andrewdavidlong | 10 April 2011 - 6:02pm

To be fair to Jude,

she isn't banging on about it. I raised the matter of the Wedding of the Year, largely because it's more interesting than the other one with whatsisname and the girl whose mum was an air hostess.

2
Andrew Harrison | 10 April 2011 - 6:56pm

I assumed the anti wedding post

was a Friday Night Armastice type comment on the media obsesion with Kate n Wills' bash. Otherwise its just a bit unneccessary n snarky

0
DogFacedBoy | 10 April 2011 - 7:16pm

Maybe ...

.. I was in a bad mood. It had been covered extensively in a previous podcast (on her last appearance I believe).

I apologise and hope they have a great life together.

0
dai | 11 April 2011 - 9:56pm

Oh bless, thanks - but I have some sympathy, Dai...

...it's all me and Mr Jude have been banging on about recently and I'm boring myself! That last podcast I was on (about a year ago, I think) involved Dave H telling me what not to play at our wedding disco, so it's Neil Young's Trans all the way. (Not really, Dave.)

Jude Rogers | 13 April 2011 - 7:57am

Little thing called Love

Might work ...

I guess that's why we eloped (still took a fair amount of planning though).

I really enjoyed it...

...like others, Janice Long was a really big influence on me musically.

John Peel was on a bit too late at night to listen to often, but Janice's evening show was just right. Great to hear her, and I *liked* hearing about Jude's wedding: it was only a couple of minutes. In fact, I insist we have a post-wedding pod, so I can hear about her frock, hair and make-up and which Auntie or Uncle got drunk and had a fight.

3
JoLean | 10 April 2011 - 7:05pm

Oh God, let's pray they don't!

If you follow me on Twitter, I'm sure you'll get a decent post-mortem!

0
Jude Rogers | 13 April 2011 - 7:59am

It's traditional

You're not properly married until there is a punch up at the reception.

(congrats BTW - best thing I ever did was get married)

0
paulwright | 15 April 2011 - 3:31pm

Loved it

although did laugh when Janice managed to mention Pete Wylie within 5 minutes of the start.

0
Chris G | 11 April 2011 - 12:03am

Reggie Yates

Gets an honorary thumbs-up for being the voice of the excellent Rastamouse!

0
Paul Vincent | 11 April 2011 - 12:41pm

No!

I love that.

0
Jude Rogers | 13 April 2011 - 8:05am

Yes!

I did a double take when I spotted the name in the credits, but on checking found it's absolutely true: Reggie IS Rastamouse!

0
Paul Vincent | 13 April 2011 - 12:23pm

The Betty Boo / Love Hearts/SH bit really did make me LOL

on the train this morning.

Must we peddle this pop filth at our kids? I'm assuming Ellen and Hepworth had decamped to Q at this point and are so not guilty of all charges m'lud?

0
Six Dog | 11 April 2011 - 12:47pm

This was about 1991

So they were well gone. Word writer Barry McIlheney may have been lurking about still, though...tsk!

Would I want TOTP back?

Andrew H's question got me thinking (and I know this crosses over with another thread). Here's my TOTP theory, a long way of answering "no":

Until you were about 10 you didn't pay that much attention to pop, or TOTP, except that sometimes there was an amusing or intriguing curiosity on the programme.

But then, when you started to get the music bug, you needed to find your way through the hordes of music out there, and what better way than by looking at what everyone else is listening to. So TOTP becomes essential viewing for about 3 years.

But then you realise that a lot of what Other People buy is complete tosh, and anyway you've discovered other avenues to find out about and listen to music, music that you like (whether it's popular or not). So you give up on TOTP.

In other words, TOTP is only ever the first rung or two of the ladder of musical awareness - once you've climbed past it you don't really want to climb back down do you?

0
Douglas | 12 April 2011 - 6:28pm

But what about

THE KIDS, Doug? They *are* watching X Factor, so why don't they watch something a bit more fun?

1
Jude Rogers | 13 April 2011 - 7:59am

Great podcast

but looking at the picture above, it leaves one question unanswered.

Did Andrew's barber really train in a borstal? ;-)

0
mojoworking | 13 April 2011 - 9:15am

Well

I thought it was very good, and found myself heading to http://mybandtshirt.tumblr.com/. That's http://mybandtshirt.tumblr.com/ almost immediately after enjoying the 'cast

0
lovelyian | 14 April 2011 - 2:02pm

So I'm not alone

in associating Janice Long with revision.
Hopefully I've still got the tape of an interview she did with Lou Howard of Red Guitars in 85/6. It really brought acroos the enthusiasm for music that they both had.

http://mybandtshirt.tumblr.com/ has got me really nostalgic for my old t-shirt collection. It once numbered over 200 and most of them were band ones. Unfortunately I had to have a major cull when I moved in with the FPO (now ex-FPO) I'll have to have a look in the loft at my mum's. I think I hid a few there!

0
YTDS | 14 April 2011 - 3:22pm

There was a time when shirts were primarily a publicity device

rather than a revenue stream and record companies doled 'em out like Smarties. From about 1974 onward my wardrobe was largely stocked with promo shirts. Needless to say, they fell apart or faded and were all binned.

0
stimpy | 14 April 2011 - 8:40pm

Sic Transit

Needless to say, they fell apart or faded and were all binned.

Indeed, happens to all bands ...but have you still got the T-shirts ;-)

SpaceBoy | 15 April 2011 - 8:20am

Revision(ism)

Was interested in someone's comment about the Police being the first reggae crossover band (or something like that). Had to go and look up the timeline. Was slightly surprised to see from Wikipedia that Roxanne was released in April 78 which was indeed *before* 10cc were number 1 with Dreadlock Holiday that summer.

But it seems it didn't make much impact as a single until the rerelease in 1979, which squares with my memory.

Meanwhile, I was intrigued by the Beatles singles in the charts---had wonderdd if it was something to do with the Red and Blue albums but these were much earlier, in 73. Turns out the Beatles Singles Collection was released in March 76 (see http://www.jpgr.co.uk/bsc1.html).

As you were ...

SpaceBoy | 15 April 2011 - 8:18am

Keith Emerson appeared on the chart rundown this week

in a solo capacity. I don't remember him having any solo product around 1976. Anyone know what that was? Honky Tonk Train Blues? Maple Leaf Rag?

0
stimpy | 15 April 2011 - 9:07am

Think you're right with your first guess -

Honky Tonk Train Blues
