Word Podcast 163: why they have a cough button in a Japanese lavatory and more

David Hepworth's picture

ImageAndrew Collins drops in between his paper round, his sitcom writing and sitting in for Nemome on 6Music to help kick around a few thoughts about "gagging it up", comedians doing karaoke, the new Radiohead album, whether Krautrock would be more popular if it had happened 40 years later, tips for the Oscars and resemblances between the events in north Africa and the media's coverage of Glastonbury.

You can follow this link to get the podcast every week or stream this new episode below.

Download speed

Sorry, no humour, razor-edged wit, or controversial opinion about rock behemoths here, just a question - has anyone else experienced extremely slow speeds in downloading the podcast in recent weeks? It's taking over three hours and cutting itself out a few MB into the process.

Other podcasts still download in seconds - is there an explanation?

57vintage | 26 February 2011 - 12:17am

No explanation

I've tried and tried and tried to replicate this issue, but simply cannot. I just tried again, and it took 49 seconds to download. You're not the only one to report this, but I can't explain it. Sorry I can't be of more help at the moment.

Fraser Lewry | 26 February 2011 - 9:49am

Slow podcast download

Yes, me too - podcast 163 has taken an hour so far and is now only going at 5.6 kb/s. It's been like this since the new year I think.

0
WholeHogg | 26 February 2011 - 9:38pm

No problems with download

even on an ageing PC and dongle-bound connection using Juice. Methinks it might be useful to give the odd detail of how and on what it's proving problematic.

DLM | 27 February 2011 - 10:12am

Coming up later

Three more tracks from Dongle-Bound Connection, featuring guest vocals by Juice.

Very frustrating, but no cause for alarm

I find the Word podcast has been extremely slow to download in recent months too. Exactly as described by 57vintage - three hours advertised and then, if I leave it for a while, it's cut out on me. I've seen Fraser's comments and realise it's beyond human understanding so this post is merely reassuring others here that they are not alone. Every week I try to find an excuse for the slow download in the material of the poddy itself, or my circumstances. This week I put it down to the immensity of Andrew Collings' guts and the fact that my computer is in an upstairs room.

0
radarchisels | 2 March 2011 - 9:03pm

No problem my end

I love getting these on a Friday. They're like a little present for making it through the week.

Lucas Hare | 26 February 2011 - 2:37am

No probs here either

podcast down in seconds

Andrew Collings in his pants n ting

2
DogFacedBoy | 26 February 2011 - 3:15am

Very brave...

..of someone who has devoted their whole life to music criticism to get up there.....
And be really,really,really,really crap.

2
shane pacey | 26 February 2011 - 1:31pm

in fairness

Andrew Collins has written a lot more about film than music in recent years. Also - it's karaoke, innit - I've seen and heard much much worse.

0
badartdog | 26 February 2011 - 1:44pm

So have I...

..but not much.
And it isn't really Karoake is it? They sell tickets, so in my book they're up for criticism.
The bands poor an' all.

2
shane pacey | 26 February 2011 - 1:47pm

They do sell tickets

But no-one buys those tickets thinking they're going to get slick, professional entertainment. They go because it's a bit crap, and because they still consider it to be entertaining. Criticising it for being what it's meant to be is a bit like damning an amateur dramatics performance for being performed in an amateur manner.

1
Bela Legosis Dad | 26 February 2011 - 2:15pm

These performances

are supposed to be viewed with good vibes and probably beer goggles not up close on Youtube so be a little forgiving. Yesh my fault for posting it, I know

0
DogFacedBoy | 27 February 2011 - 1:34am

Cold light of day

You really had to be there. Which is not to say my performance was good. Bit unfair to criticise off of a YouTube clip, for which you didn't have to buy a ticket, Shane!

But thanks for not criticising the size of my stomach, which was my main point of focus.

4
Andrew_Collins | 1 March 2011 - 8:23am

In the cold light of day...

..the posting WAS a little on the unkind side, but as originally mentioned, I was really commenting on the fact that you are (perhaps not so much lately) a music critic.
That separates you a little, from the other comics, at least in my book.
I know it's all a laugh and that, but for me it's a little payback for years of snotty post-punk rock journalism that would very often verge on the personal (Again, not necessarily by you, Andrew..I would have loved Ian Penman to have been up there doing Aga Doo instead)
Apologies for any offence, if it makes you feel any better, the worst Karaoke I ever heard was from a well-known professional vocalist who shall remain nameless, who was filmed at one these bars early on in the craze (perhaps money WAS too tight to mention)...now that was crap.

2
shane pacey | 1 March 2011 - 1:16pm

Ouch

That's like something our teachers used to do on the last day of term.

0
Cobweb Steve | 26 February 2011 - 1:34pm

Hail To The Hep

He's not a cynic just a disillusioned romantic I guess. And why do I agree pretty much with pretty everything he says about music despite being half a generation or so younger?

He is our Cruel, Capricious and Sagacious Leader. Hail To The Hep

1
Sheev | 26 February 2011 - 9:39am

Just me then

Have to disagree about Episodes. Not laugh out loud, slow burner, sure - but worth keeping up with. The final two episodes were quite brilliant, laughs and pathos aplenty. Final set piece with Mangan and LeBlanc definitely worth catching if you gave up on the early episodes.

But then, I enjoyed the Kings Speech and couldn't give a tinkers cuss about Radiohead, so there you go.

Enjoying the new Kerry Shale links, mind you...

1
Steve Riddle | 26 February 2011 - 7:13pm

I liked Episodes too

I think David Hepworth's comments about it being too distant somehow do go in some ways to explain wy it doesn't quite work. Nevertheless, I think it was funny in a sort of laid back way.

0
Ozmium | 26 February 2011 - 11:53pm

But I watched 1 and half hours of it without

laughing why should I hang around for last episode why not chivvy me along with a gag in first five minutes? For all the hype and talent in involved I was deeply surprised how un-funny and un-dramatic it was.

2
Chris G | 1 March 2011 - 4:35pm

The last five minutes seem to be

Mr Hep trying to get a word in edgeways - well, a question actually - and then it just fades out. I could barely sleep last night wondering what that question was from Robbie1112.

0
Mr Fade | 26 February 2011 - 9:46pm

Well.. my question

Well.. my question was

Warren Zevon or Randy Newman?

I reckon the guys could get 10 minutes out of that one. A really difficult call I think the Massive will agree.

I'm hoping it'll get carried forward to a future 'cast.

0
Robbie1112 | 27 February 2011 - 10:50am

Never seen a cough button

in a Japanese toilet. Gents, at least. The FPO will confirm that some of the higher end ladies* do have a little button that makes a rushing water sound, so that no one in an adjoining stall is forced to hear any tinkling.

*Ladies toilets. Not actual ladies.

1
maggieloveshopey | 26 February 2011 - 10:04pm

Yes, some of them do...

have the "courtesy flush" capability along with bidet buttons and a handy dryer which can singe if you're not careful!

Retro Man | 7 March 2011 - 6:23pm

Jigsaw of Ry Cooder

To share some of Mr Ellen's heart lifting foul language on this podcast - that was fucking funny.

The ideal gift for any poorly Word reader. Brilliant. Day made.

0
Beezer | 26 February 2011 - 11:37pm

Revolution

Of course there wasn't a revolution with every Beatles record, that was just The White Album.

1
dai | 28 February 2011 - 6:05pm

The Neil Young solo

gig David mentions was actually 1989, December I think. I got a ticket from a tout and was four rows from the stage. It was one of the greatest gigs I've ever seen. Young was just mesmerising, I couldn't take my eyes off him.

0
Johan | 28 February 2011 - 10:31pm

Are you the farmer...?

on the subject of podcast members spotted while listening to the podcast I couldn't see David or Mark from where I was when this came up!

0
Chris G | 1 March 2011 - 4:56pm

Slow for me...

I'm still struggling to download. It only seems to be the Word podcast that is running so slow. Why??!?!

0
Fergus Higginson | 1 March 2011 - 10:54pm
Fraser Lewry | 1 March 2011 - 10:58pm

Is Andrew Collins trying to pass himself off as a Stand-Up now?

Please say No!

In terms of a non-comedy performer trying to bluff themselves as a competent stand-up comedian, he makes Lauren Laverne on 10 O'Clock Live look like Bill Hicks in comparison

3
Holden | 2 March 2011 - 5:06am

Have you seen his standup show?

Not sure how you can judge him if you haven't. He did about a dozen performances at Edinburgh last year which were pretty well reviewed.

0
Johan | 2 March 2011 - 6:40am

Do you know....

....I don't understand a single one of those references but I suspect you're not being kind.

I've known Andrew a reasonable amount of time and I don't think he has ever sought to "pass himself off" as anything. What he has done is say "I'd like to have a go at this" and been prepared to take the consequences.

I wouldn't do it but I think it's entirely praiseworthy.

6
David Hepworth | 2 March 2011 - 4:40pm

Praiseworthy?!

Deluded might be nearer the mark. I remember a particuarly unkind review penned by Collins of comedian Jenny Eclair many years ago, so it'll be interesting to see how's he's embraced by his "peers" on the circuit now he fancies himself as a stand-up

Heard him attempt a live set on a Herrings/Collins Podcast and it was bloody awful. He may pen a witty article, but as a live comedy performer he has all the delivery skills of a dead postman.

Music journos attempting live comedy is as good an idea as rock stars trying to act (as David Quantick has also proved )

3
Holden | 2 March 2011 - 8:40pm

I don't think he

"fancies himself as a stand-up". In fact I think he has already said he won't be trying it again, despite the fact that his shows went rather well.

And he seems to be pretty friendly with many of his "peers" actually, Lee Mack, Robin Ince, Simon Day, Richard Herring ...

0
Johan | 2 March 2011 - 9:18pm

Bloody awful

For the record, as there seems to be some confusion here, I performed my first and as it turns out *only* one-man show at the Edinburgh Fringe last year. It was free to get in and see it, which I felt was the most realistic way for me to have a crack at it. People came. They seemed to like it. I decided that to really do it justice I would have to work unsociable hours and I'm too old to start all that. But, having done my show without charging people to see it, I didn't feel I had harmed anyone. You can certainly blame Richard Herring and the podcast for my bravery/stupidity to do so. Blame the audiences: they encouraged me!

Also for the record, I found other comedians (not exactly my "peers", as you put it) extremely kind and helpful. Not at all bitter and twisted about me having a go. I have written comedy for television, as well as review records (something I've done less and less of since leaving Q in 1997). This doesn't give me the *right* to have a go at stand-up, but there is a progression there. I spend a lot of time hanging around with comedians, and I guess it rubbed off.

Still, you're safe, Holden. My "dead postman" delivery will not trouble you again. It was fun while it lasted. At no point did I delude myself about anything or try to pass myself off as anything I wasn't. A more self-aware experiment I cannot imagine. If you stand up on stage and say some things you think are funny, you are a stand-up comedian, no matter how bad you are.

But thanks for your kind sentiments!

(I don't remember unkindly reviewing Jenny Eclair, but it's entirely possible I did. I have worked with Jenny on many an occasion and she seems not to bear a grudge if I did. Comedian have far thicker skin than I do!)

0
Andrew_Collins | 16 March 2011 - 4:51pm

Just wondering like...

If you are not a stand up comedian (and I accept that you are not), then were you on the stage at the "Karaoke Circus - comedians doing karaoke" gig as a member of the public? In which case why are you talking about yourself doing it and pointing people to your YouTube coverage rather than, say, that of Tim Minchin? You can't have it both ways.

Downloading issue...contnued

Thanks for trying Fraser. My daughter is also experiencing the same problem on her more up to date system and presumably her brand new Macbook.

I tried for about the 10th time tonight and after it cut out again, it is giving the message "err = .3259".

This has only been a problem since around the start of 2011.

0
57vintage | 2 March 2011 - 11:40pm

What he says

And others. It's only been a problem since the start of the year, and seems to be getting worse. The same error message has shown up for me the last couple of times I tried to download. Other podcasts are not affected.
I say this in the hope that the information will be useful, not to have a go at you, Fraser. I know you're doing what you can to investigate.

0
Gatz | 2 March 2011 - 11:53pm

err = .3259

Googling around suggests that it's a pretty common problem, although no-one seems to have a definitive solution. Plenty of people suggest switching off your anti-virus software and trying again, although that doesn't explain why the issue might affect some users and not others, and some podcasts and not others. Either way, it certainly appears that it's not just our podcast that's affected.

Other suggestions include restarting your router, switching off your firewall, adding a rule to your firewall to specifically allow downloads from Apple (and in our case Hipcast.com, I guess), updating iTunes... etc.

0
Fraser Lewry | 2 March 2011 - 11:56pm

They were on Factory records weren't they? Sort of arty synth pop funk. Never really happened for them.

Sven Garlic | 3 March 2011 - 7:48am
stimpy | 3 March 2011 - 9:33am

As a data point, it seems fine for me

I only get around 1-2MB broadband throughput on a good day but the podcast is always there in iTunes when I look for it and comes down with no errors.

0
stimpy | 3 March 2011 - 9:38am

John Fahey

I'm reacting to a slightly older podcast, but it gave me a warm feeling of nostalgia (particularly as an ex-pat living in Vienna) to hear old Heppy recommending John Fahey over Christmas - proof that he wasn't the only father torturing his kids with The Legend of Blind Joe Death. My old man is still proud of his American imported New Possibilty LP that he paid 15 quid for in Beaver Radio, Liverpool. Can't say I shared his appreciation, except for one album called "After the Ball" which I defaced with a black biro as a toddler and haven't been able to find since.

btw David are you the only living fan of Montrose?

0
tigermountain74 | 6 March 2011 - 8:44am

No...

..I like 'em too.
(How could you not...aren't all rock bands supposed to look like this?)

0
shane pacey | 6 March 2011 - 9:35am

Count me in too...

A great band and, possibly, the direct antecedent of the American 'hair-metal' bands of the late-70s/80s.*

Without Montrose we wouldn't have had Van Halen, Bon Jovi and all the rest. ( I make no comment if this was a good thing or not!)

*Perhaps the ur-hair metal band, or possibly the echt-hair metal band?

0
stimpy | 6 March 2011 - 12:30pm

Let joy be unconfined

I don't know if it's dumb luck or technical twiddling, but the last two podcasts, along with a couple of others I subscribed to, have just simultaneously downloaded in 4 minutes.

0
Gatz | 10 March 2011 - 7:30pm

Karaoke is unfunny, end of.

I can just about accept as quite amusing seeing my friends doing karaoke, but this Karaoke Circus thing seems like a vanity project to me. Yes, I am sure you've just got to be there but wild horses etc...
