Word Massive meet-up - anyone interested?

robram's picture

I've relatively recently moved to Brighton and don't know that many people, so wondered if anyone on here lives sort of locally and fancies a night in a drinking establishment, talking about stuff that may come up on this 'ere blog or even other things.

Anyone interested?

2

I always thought...

...it would be a good idea for a crowd of us to go to London for the day, get hammered at lunchtime, then call round to the Word office and demand to be allowed to contribute to the podcast.

Well, its sort of a good idea, if you like that sort of thing.....

I'll get me coat, again.

Isn't that what Eamonn Forde does?

Or is that his real voice?

Apologies for the cheap dig if you're reading this Eamonn. I greatly enjoy what you write and I'm sure I'd love what you say, if only you came with subtitles.

That said, nobody can understand my deep Black Country drone, so it's good to recognise a fellow mumblist.

0
Molesworth | 11 September 2009 - 12:55pm

You should follow Eamonn

on Twitter!

The bile he reserves for fellow London bus passengers is a joy to behold!

1
robram | 11 September 2009 - 12:57pm

Always

up for a pint in Lunnen.

0
Twangothan | 11 September 2009 - 12:48pm

I'd be interested to see how that works

I'd imagine there are people who are completely different in real life compared to how you imagine them. And if you meet them in a pub, do you get to find out their real names?

Anyway, I don't live in the area I'm afraid, but it's a great idea.

0
Joe R | 11 September 2009 - 1:24pm

Hey, why the hell not?

In theory - and if the Mrs approves and at a date about a month from now, upon which most could agree, I'd be there. Should be a quiet boozer though.. Oh dear..now we could have the whole North South East West debate and it could degenerate. I'll step back...

0
The Fat White Duke | 11 September 2009 - 1:46pm

F.P.O. Alert

How could she not approve! I suggest 'The Glassworks' a Weatherspoon pub in the Angel Islington shopping mall N1. It's near the Word office in case they fancy getting the beers in. Relatively cheap booze, large pub - no music as far as I remember(that should stop any fighting around the jukebox!) How about Friday 30-10 ? open to all other suggestions just thought I'd get the ball rolling.

0
Lunaman | 11 September 2009 - 2:33pm

Ah yes

Pre Word there was Mojo and its on-line Enlightenment section. We (me and a dozen or so other regular MOJO4MUSIC posters) arranged our first meeting of the type you are suggesting in The Moon Under Water in London one Saturday, maybe 2003. Nobody else looked like I expected and apparently neither did I... We called the meetings Jolly Ups. It was great to meet people in the flesh for the first time and many long term friendships and relationships have blossomed in the ensuing years. Of course, we don't frequent Mojo4MUSIC any more, having launched a breakaway site after Mojo failed to get their's to function at a reasonable speed and quite a few of us are now here too.

Jolly Ups have been happening regularly all over the globe since then; drinks have been drunk, friendships forged, gigs attended, CDRs and wives swapped, quizes argued over and even a studio hired in Paris for a jam session.

You don't know what you're letting yourselves in for!

PS Re 30/10; wouldn't a Saturday be a better bet if you want out-of-towners to attend? Although I think I'm going to see The Enid in Chesham on Sat 31st. * gets coat *

0
Neil Jung | 11 September 2009 - 3:03pm

Friday or Sat

I'm OK with either Friday or Saturday 30-31 October. If it's a saturday, afternoon or evening whatever's good for the majority.

0
Lunaman | 11 September 2009 - 3:06pm

Friday or Saturday

I'd probably prefer Friday, but I'm flexible.
Thanks for the PM, Luna.
Mines a pint of Guinness.

30th evening

works for me

30th evening

works for me

0
Twangothan | 11 September 2009 - 6:38pm

Can't we all meet up at The Enid gig?

Robert John Godfrey would, I'm sure, be delighted to see us.

0
Lenny Law | 11 September 2009 - 9:30pm

Blimey

I'm a Cheshamite. If you're from the area too you're the only other Shakey fan I've come across (unless the name's more inspired by the Teenage Fanclub song).

0
Joe Robert | 24 September 2009 - 7:42pm

The name

is from the Teenage Fanclub song but I am a Shakey fan, or was until the Greendale tour fiasco. I'm not from Chesham; I've never even been there, but surely there must be other NY fans there? Are you coming to see The Enid?!

0
Neil Jung | 24 September 2009 - 7:48pm

I do local covers gigs and

I do local covers gigs and occasionally get a nod of recognition if I do Heart of Gold - and sometimes Rockin the Free World - but I've never met anyone in the area who can shoot the breeze about, say, how bad Greendale is.

Enjoy your visit to our fair town, and the Enid gig. I can't say I'd heard of them, but I'm off to check them out now!

0
Joe Robert | 24 September 2009 - 8:49pm

Massive gathering

Hi all,
I've been away from the blog for a while and thought I'd update and confirm that Friday 30th October at 'The Glassworks' pub in the angel is on. Feel free to add your name if you're able to make it and I look forward to meeting up with anyone who can make it. Here's the pub website link -

0
Lunaman | 4 October 2009 - 7:58am

Recognition?

It will probably be fairly crowded.
If we carry a copy of the next issue of Word with the logo prominently displayed it might help.
If not, does anyone else have any ideas? Practical solutions welcome from anyone, not just those turning up.
What sort of time are we suggesting? Straight from work and 6 - 6:30ish or have something to eat and make it 8ish?

0
Carl Parker | 4 October 2009 - 9:24am

Straight out..........

Lets make it 6-6.30 in case anyone is coming straight from work in town. Well volunteered Carl! You can bring a copy of the Word and stick it on a table along with a pint of carling for me - cheers!

0
Lunaman | 4 October 2009 - 9:43am

6 onwards better

Yes 6ish kickoff is good straight from work, beer then possible a spot of grub? Porky scratchings or similar?

1
Twangothan | 4 October 2009 - 1:12pm

I could be tempted...

... will do my best. I am a furtive, rather short, William Hague a like, with a loud Glasweigan accent if anyone sees me...

1
ganglesprocket | 14 October 2009 - 4:27pm

Bloody Royal Mail

It looks like I may well have to buy a copy from the newsagents. Local strike is on again. National strike next week.

0
Carl Parker | 14 October 2009 - 6:51pm

Mailshot

Carl don't worry if your copy hasn't arrived we'll sort it out. I'm sure we can come up with a cunning plan!

0
Lunaman | 14 October 2009 - 7:36pm

My only problem is,

...I'm in Belfast. I'll get on to the easyjet site now!

0
Iainso | 11 September 2009 - 3:03pm

I can open the Portland, OR chapter...

...who is my nearest Word neighbour?

0
nicktf | 11 September 2009 - 6:30pm
Uncle Wheaty | 11 September 2009 - 7:29pm

Is Reading close enough

?

0
Rigid Digit | 11 September 2009 - 7:34pm

Sorry about the belated response...

Have got here via the Word newsletter.
Would be up for an Oxford chapter.
I do occassionally get down to Lahndon as well, but not logistically that easy!

A meet up would be good.

0
Adman | 24 September 2009 - 7:34pm

No idea if this is still live

Only just come across it, but Oxford is feasible for me

0
fortuneight | 18 October 2009 - 11:18am

Birmingham or Glasgow ?

I'm in Birmingham during the week much of the time, would be happy to meet somewhere like The Old Joint Stock or The Wellington (or maybe even Urban Pie, which is fabulous!)

Or if we can organise a weekend date that suits, I'm sure Mr Blast and some others would be willing to meet in somewhere like The Griffin ?

0
el hombre malo | 11 September 2009 - 7:43pm

FACT!

but it looks like you and me tho, so how's about Clockwork?
It has a beer garden and for an auld gasper like me, that's a must plus it's just up the road.

0
James Blast | 14 October 2009 - 7:06pm

London gathering

OK I'ts looking like Friday the 30th. Lets leave it open over the weekend and see if any others respond. We'll sort it out over the next week if that sounds ok with you all.

0
Lunaman | 11 September 2009 - 9:23pm

count me in

Sounds marvellous. We've been contemplating a get together for eighteen months or so, so thanks for actually sorting a date and venue!

0
Hannah | 27 September 2009 - 6:38am

Did anyone read Frank Skinner's bit in The Thunderer today?

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/frank_skinner/articl...

A very fine piece and worthy of extended debate.

I do hope you'll all be drinking tea.

0
Lenny Law | 11 September 2009 - 9:35pm

I did

He's a (perhaps) surprisingly good writer, I find. Quite a thought-provoking piece on our booze culture. It's actually the first time I've known him to make a strong anti-booze statement, and the firmness of it takes you aback somewhat. He makes some good points, and anything said in response sounds like denial, but I'll give it a go anyway.

Mood-altering substances have always been part of human culture. I don't think we've yet reached a point in our evolution where self-doubt and inhibition are no longer an issue. Therefore, alcohol can still play a useful role, within reason. Excess, of course, is the issue, but I do think a 'middle way' is the best route. As a Scot of Presbyterian stock I wouldn't say that the temperance movement brought about a state of nirvana in my homeland- far from it; if anything, it's the extremes of stern sobriety on the one hand and blind drunkenness on the other that are at the root of much of our problems.

Cheers!

DougieJ | 11 September 2009 - 10:10pm

I rarely

get down to Olde London Town since my visa expired but I will be risking it all when I stay for a couple of nights to savour the delights of Mott & his Hooples. Where is the best place to gather with likeminded nutters?

0
Beany | 11 September 2009 - 9:44pm

Brighton

Any of the Pubs around Hanover Street or try The Basketmakers arms. Usually full of ex Pop Stars,Old record shop workers, old school media types and people who could tell you who the drummer in Focus was.
The Engineer near Preston circus is also a cracking pub and does a mean Sunday roast. Avoid West street at any cost.

0
Sour Crout | 11 September 2009 - 10:09pm

If anyone's passing through Grimsby/Cleethorpes

...give me a shout (although it's unlikely as it's not 'on the road' to anywhere). I'd be more than happy to discuss pop culture minutiae over a few light ales. This would be my favoured watering hole:

0
DougieJ | 12 September 2009 - 1:30am

I often go to GY

Parents live there. Prefer the Notts to Willies, though.

0
Dave Holley | 25 September 2009 - 7:39am

In The City

Sure there will be some of the Music Mafia coming up to Manchester, 18th - 20th. Remember if you are passing...pass.

No way will I be paying £250 + VAT to hand around with you lot but I might be seeing what showcases there are in the city at large.

0
Beany | 25 September 2009 - 8:23am

Intending to

relocate to Bournemouth from Somerset. How about a Dorset coven ?

0
RobertC | 27 September 2009 - 7:06am

You should all come...

...to 'I'm very nearly a 50 year old bloke and this is what I know about music' at the Cumberland Arms in Byker (the worlds best pub), Newcastle upon Tyne, on 15th Oct at 8pm. Only £8. You'll be entertained and tickled at the same time. Then you can all give the show a good kicking on the blog.

0
Mr Drayton | 4 October 2009 - 9:35am

If it starts at 6, what time will people hang around until?

I'm stuck at home til my hubbie gets home from work to babysit!
Can't imagine I'd be able to get to the pub much before 8 / 8.30. Is it going to be worth me coming along?

0
Hannah | 14 October 2009 - 3:11pm

Difficult to say

We may all end up hating each other; after the first pint there is a prog v country stand-off with the winner having to take on a heavy metal kid with the result we all get ejected before 7.
On the other hand when you get there there could be this group of drunkards who hang on till closing time when they part with "You're my besht mate, y'ar. Ever. Why din' we mee' before?"

0
Carl Parker | 14 October 2009 - 6:49pm

just don't

tell any goths where you're going, you know what they're like...

0
James Blast | 14 October 2009 - 7:11pm

Of course....

I doubt we'll run out of topical conversation somehow! Look forward to seeing you there.

0
Lunaman | 14 October 2009 - 7:40pm

How late?

I've sent Hannah my mobile number, so that she can contact me to check if we're still there.
If anyone else wants the my number contact me off the board and I'll give it to you.

Obviously, for reasons of privacy, this offer only applies to people already registered on the blog.

0
Carl Parker | 17 October 2009 - 11:19am

This thread is a bit here and there

so, for simplicity, as I understand it, the inaugural Word blog (London chapter) meet-up is...

Friday 30th October, 6pm
The Glassworks, N1

and from what I can tell, the list of people coming is: Lunaman, Carl Parker, Twangothan, ganglesprocket and Hannah (apologies if I've missed anyone, it's not intended as a definitive list).

Everyone has to come with a copy of the latest Word and Carl Parker will have a copy on a table.

I realise this post is just saying what's gone before, but it helps put my mind in order a bit more, plus it saves anyone else who stumbles across this thread having to piece together 60 odd posts.

1
Joe R | 18 October 2009 - 10:14am

Good summary

The copy of Word will be the shop edition, which I've now bought as my subscriber copy is still somewhere out there.

0
Carl Parker | 18 October 2009 - 11:17am

Totally agree

I think it may be worth starting a new thread just in case anyone has not seen this one concerning a London meet up. I'll start one up.

0
Lunaman | 19 October 2009 - 8:08pm

Miffed

I'll be on a training course that day, in Reading. Feck.

Otherwise I would love to troop along.

Have a splendid evening.

0
Beezer | 19 October 2009 - 8:49pm

Lovely to see you all last night

It was really nice to put some faces to the log-ins, and to be bought pints of Fairport (!) by our own dear readers. Seventies, Fraser, Mark and I were genuinely touched. It makes the whole thing worthwhile - not that it's not worthwhile in the first place, but it makes it MORE worthwhile. Please let's do it again some time (and apologies to Twango for not saying goodbye but you had disappeared somewhere).

But the main question is... how are they managing to do a £1.69 pint in London? Wonders will never cease.

0
Andrew Harrison | 31 October 2009 - 11:07am

You were done

It's all part of the Wetherspoon's bi-annual real ale festival. In my local last night they were £1.49 a pint AND you have the option of 3 thirds of different beers instead of trying a single pint (and thinking it is shit).

The lucky ones will find a Belgian 8.5% proof beer. At £1.49. Streuth!

0
Beany | 31 October 2009 - 11:37am

It was rather splendid.

(note: oops, should have posted this in the other thread. will go do so now)

0
Hannah | 18 November 2009 - 4:57am

Tell us more

Who went? What did you talk about? Did people look like you expected? Was Mark Ellen taller than expected? Did you stay 'til chucking out time? Who got the most drunk?

0
Neil Jung | 6 November 2009 - 7:49pm

Hi Neil

A good night was had by all - take a look at this thread and hope to see you at the next one.
