Word massive- hands across the ocean

PaddyH's picture

Well, hands across Mathew Street, because I am meeting Ola Claeson and his mates in Liverpool tomorrow for a wee walking tour of Beatles/ general history landmarks.
If any of the massive (Merseyside Chapter) are around, come and join us.
I'm thinking of introducing the good looking chaps to the glories of a Sayers scouse pasty and chips...

6

No!

Next Friday, Paddy! Good thing you posted this. Haven´t even started packing yet. Still, have an arrow up for your kindness.

0
Ola Claesson | 11 November 2010 - 10:40am

Yes!

Message noted - that fits even better with the schedule.
Beany, I'll text you details, but I was thinking an hour or so early afternoon.
I'm sorry that it isn't tomorrow as I was just about to get on the blower to book some tickets for Phill Jupitus at Waterstones.
Just looking at your Tumblr Ola, sorry for misspelling your surname above, you're the kind of annoyingly good looking Scandinavians who need to get your chompers around a few gravy chip barms. The Lobster Pot it is for lunch!
We may also be required to step into a Beatles-related pub or two, just in the interests of maintaining the historic integrity of the tour.

0
PaddyH | 11 November 2010 - 11:56am

Glad it fits better!

Would have been rather frustrating had it meant cancellation. Funnily enough, Annoyingly Good Looking Scandinavian Bloke used to be my surname until my humble side took control. Don´t worry about the spelling, though. Considering what day it is I´m thankful for not speaking German and being Günther Claeson.

RE a Beatles-related pub or two: I´ve never been to Ye Cracke at Rice Street. Nudge-nudge.

0
Ola Claesson | 11 November 2010 - 12:38pm

Ye Cracke

I once played a gig there.

Now there's a claim to fame.

1
Spartacus Mills | 11 November 2010 - 12:46pm

Can I also suggest three other HJH-related pubs:

The Philharmonic on Hope Street: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philharmonic_Dining_Rooms,_Liverpool)
Lennon once said that the biggest downside of fame was not being able to have a pint in the Phil anymore

The Grapes on Mathew Street:
This is where the bands playing the Cavern (including you know who) would meet for a beer before and after the show.

The Jacaranda on Slater Street:
This is where the fabs used to hang out with Alan Williams, their first manager, and they painted the murals which can still be seen on the cellar walls.

0
stimpy | 11 November 2010 - 12:49pm

I´ve never been to The Jacaranda

Mainly due to the fact that it´s not within walking distance. Or it is?

The Grapes I knew from the picture they have on the wall there with a plack saying "picture taken here". The Phil I knew from that quote, so I had to go there too.

Must take you up on The Jacaranda, though.

If I wasn´t me, I would be slightly worried about my Rain Man thing, surely.

Ola Claesson | 11 November 2010 - 1:03pm

Hola Ola

You have to remember that the kindly folk in Liverpool are always ahead of the rest of the world. Send/post your itinery for the trip to pay homage to "the lads who changed the world"* and I will do my best to meet and greet in the customary Massive manner. I will be at the Bury beer festival nexy Friday but will work around your timings.

*Gerry and the Pacemakers

0
Beany | 11 November 2010 - 10:46am

I learned yesterday

that those strapping young lads called Carcass are from Liverpool as well.

Just felt like sharing.

0
Ola Claesson | 11 November 2010 - 5:38pm

Assuming it's on 19th not 12th

Assuming it's on 19th not 12th, I will be in Belfast until mid afternoon, but if you'll be carrying on beyond that sort of time (if?!), post a rough itinerary (as Beany suggests) and I'll try and join you.

0
Red Umpire | 11 November 2010 - 10:51am

What an excellent idea, have a great time!

Friday is out for me as I am down south but I would have made an effort if it was the weekend, would love to meet Ola to discuss the läckerheter på svenska musik and not forgetting the "grymt" Soundtrack of Our Lives!

Have fun!

0
Retro Man | 11 November 2010 - 10:58am

Läckerheter på svenska musik?

Tre mer av dem senare (TMADS!)

7
stimpy | 11 November 2010 - 11:15am

haha...post of the week!

!

0
Retro Man | 11 November 2010 - 11:30am

Brilliant.

I'm learning how to pronounce that. Once I do, I will only ever say TMFTL in Swedish.

:-D

0
Bob | 11 November 2010 - 11:40am

although I think using TMADS here rather than TMFTL will take

the in-joke a little TOO far! :-)

1
stimpy | 11 November 2010 - 12:09pm

I sometimes worry about my grammar

Now we´re even. ;-)

1
Ola Claesson | 11 November 2010 - 5:36pm

Hello Mr Retro!

We´ll be there for the weekend (leaving way too early on Sunday). I don´t know how long a drive it is for you, but you´re welcome if you care to join us Friday evening or something like that. One of us is actually a Göteborgare (and he looks the part too). Grymt indeed!

0
Ola Claesson | 11 November 2010 - 12:42pm

It's a bit of a trek from Retro Land unfortunately...

if the main meet and Beatles thing was on the Saturday I'd have a serious think about it, but driving would be out of the question as I do like my ale!

Anyway, it's a fantastic idea and more evidence of the good nature of the Word Blog and the friendships that can be forged, legally, from an internet forum!

0
Retro Man | 11 November 2010 - 1:25pm

"...a Göteborgare ( and he looks the part too )"

You know I have to ask.
Scruffy beard ?
or
Sailor suit ?

0
Locust | 14 November 2010 - 7:45pm

Sounds more like one of Turbonegro

if you ask me...

0
Retro Man | 14 November 2010 - 9:35pm

Both of them = Turbonegro

Either of them = Göteborgare

0
Locust | 15 November 2010 - 1:20am

I should have known someone would call me on this

I don´t really know what I meant, but no scruffy beard or sailor suit. He´s got an impressive paunch, perfectly rounded, which makes me feel jealous.

0
Ola Claesson | 15 November 2010 - 11:39am

What a civilised idea

Well done.

6
David Hepworth | 11 November 2010 - 11:30am

Sayers!

That's one of the things I miss most from home. Sausage rolls aside, have a good time one and all.

0
Spartacus Mills | 11 November 2010 - 11:51am

The Squeezers will be there.

If I can get my Big Sis to take care of the Aged P for the day which seems very likely.Tell us when and where Paddy when you sort out the details with Ola.PM me or DM on Twitter.Already looking forward to it.

0
Pencilsqueezer | 11 November 2010 - 12:16pm

Mr Squeezer, Paul - I was thinking

Starting at the Everyman, showing the guys the site of the maternity hospital on Oxford St, across to the Collegiate (via Paddy's wig wam & the university buildings.
Back across the city to The Phil, Ye Cracke, LIPA, the Anglican and Gambier Terrace. Down the hill to the Jacaranda, Slater Street & Cream.
Then down Bold Street, into the Playhouse area (got some great gags from the show about fans of rival actors fighting one another there in the 19th Century) across Whitechapel (bit more local history there) into Mathew Street (where it all began) and the Cavern (don't look it's not there - but there is an imitation across the road).
Hard Day's Night Hotel and Beatles shop. Maybe a quick burst down the Pier Head for a squizz at the world's most famous waterfront(®Liverpool ECHO) and the superlambanana.
Then a nice pint in Rigby's.

0
PaddyH | 11 November 2010 - 3:23pm

Hard Day's Night Hotel

I was born in Liverpool (in '52) and went back for family occasions until the early '70s but I haven't been back since.

This thread has inspired me to maybe drag the FPO up there for a weekend and revisit my old haunts.

Is the Hard Day's Night any good as an hotel or is just a chain hotel wearing a moptop wig?

My parents always used to look up to the Adelphi as 'the posh hotel' but I suspect it's not what it was since the liners stopped :-)

1
stimpy | 11 November 2010 - 3:45pm

Have an up for

the words 'chain hotel wearing a moptop wig'.
It's a good fairly high end four star with plenty of Beatles stuff to look at.
A fine review of it by the boy Du Noyer over at the Guardian:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2008/feb/10/liverpool.hotels

0
PaddyH | 11 November 2010 - 6:44pm

O.K.

Arranged for my Big Sis to look after the Aged P so it's all systems go for The Squeezers.Sounds like you've got everything worked out my friend so let's see if I've got this right.Meet up outside the Everyman on the 19th Nov.Or is it inside the Bistro and at what time?Let me know and the GLW and I will be there.Should be a very agreeable occasion, looking forward to it.

0
Pencilsqueezer | 11 November 2010 - 4:38pm

Superlambanana

Looks a good route to me Paddy, but isn't the SLB on the corner of Tithebarn Street and Vauxhall Road rather than down at the Pier Head? Or have they moved it again?

You might want to take in the Eleanor Rigby statue/sculpture on Stanley St too?

When the guys go back to the airport they should ask the cabbie to take them via Penny Lane, Mendips, Strawberry Fields and Forthlin Road too.

Might join you in Rigby's if I can.

0
Red Umpire | 11 November 2010 - 5:07pm

(Coughs)

Have been to Penny Lane, Mendips (inside and outside), Strawberry Field (sneaked in and took a leak:) and Forthlin Road (inside and outside).

I am a seasoned Beatle nerd, after all.

My brave companions, however, are joining me for the first time and I think they would enjoy the Beatle bus thingy. I think I will even suggest a ride. Not that I would like to see it all again, of course. :)

0
Ola Claesson | 11 November 2010 - 5:30pm

In that case

Why not come over to Manchester, home of the Burnage Beatles 8-}

1
Beany | 11 November 2010 - 5:42pm

Have been to Manchester!

Drove there from Liverpool (rented a car when visiting in 08), took a walk through the city centre, bought ice cream, visited a library and then a museum. Was rather surprised when one was allowed to touch almost everything on display. Have lots of pics of me poking the noses of very old greek sculptures. Swedish museums barely allow you to look with both eyes.

They had an aarvark there too. Being a fan of Black Adder it was a highlight.

0
Ola Claesson | 11 November 2010 - 7:51pm

Sounds like a plan

If you're up Rodney Street/Hope Street way, take them to see McKenzie's tomb in the burnt out church on the corner of Rodney and Maryland (immortalised in Amsterdam's 'Does This Train Stop on Merseyside')

Superlambanana is indeed outside one of the JMU buildings at the bottom of Tithebarn Street - unless there's more than one!

If you're up Bold Street way, you ought to take in the Blue Angel at the top (formerly the Razz, and The Blue Angel again before that) and also call into Probe (although it's not the same since it moved from the end of Mathew Street)

Not been in the Adelphi for about 20 years - from memory, the public areas on the ground floor still retain a faded, ocean liner-esque opulence and are worth a look - but the bedrooms are rank, as I recall.

Oh, and when you're in the Phil - make sure they go to the Gents!

0
Paul Waring | 11 November 2010 - 5:32pm

Mini Superlambananas

I've just remembered that there is a group ('flock'?) of mini-SLBs down by the Liver Building that were kept after the event a couple of winters ago. Maybe Paddy was referring to them?

Ah, the Blue Angel... where I met the future Mrs Umpire. It was a shit-hole then; it must be rank beyond belief now.

1
Red Umpire | 11 November 2010 - 5:41pm

No I was going to walk back up

To Tithebarn St, and it had nothing to do with its proximity to Rigby's and the fact that I know more than is usually considered normal about the Dale Street's role in the English civil war battles. (Cue more great gags about the last man named Rupert to win a scrap in Liverpool.)

0
PaddyH | 11 November 2010 - 6:27pm

Friday is difficult for me

As I should be working oop north in Preston.

But let me know times and I'll see what I can do.

I know it's not music related, but Ola ought to be shown the Grand Old Lady, don't you think, Paddy? The tin mine - not so much.

0
Paul Waring | 11 November 2010 - 2:46pm

After last night, Paul

I'm not too sure. They are Scandinavian so they fit the core audience for the other mob.
Ola, you're not, well, how shall I put this, Kopites?

0
PaddyH | 11 November 2010 - 2:50pm

I had to Google Kopites

I´m more of a Älmeboda/Linneryd kind of a guy.

0
Ola Claesson | 11 November 2010 - 7:30pm

For those appearing later...

Ola, if you want I could sort some tickets for a comedy show out - Laughterhouse - you'll have to pay, but they are cheap, and it is the best club in the world, in my opinion.

0
PaddyH | 11 November 2010 - 3:04pm

Mmmm...

(...let's have a third attempt at posting...)

May be a goer. Would have my own negotiations to see to. Will advise.

0
Doods | 11 November 2010 - 5:16pm

To all contributors

I´m really looking forward to this. I was before, but now the level of excitement is reaching that of a childhood Christmas.

Some members of The Massive appear to meet up regularly, but for me this is really quite an occasion. I´m moved.

0
Ola Claesson | 11 November 2010 - 5:40pm

Are you not coming down to London?

I could do a blinding Rock Tour of the capital for you...the place where the Pistols ate pie & mash, where Pete Townsend went to school, where Joe Strummer tried to light a match to set fire to a car (the wind blew it out) and most importantly, where Soundtrack of Our Lives played their first London show! (there's no blue plaque there just yet though...)

1
Retro Man | 11 November 2010 - 6:18pm

Could we go to Waterloo Station?

Not necessarily every Friday night, but would like to see it once.

I´m sure there will be a TSOOL plaque sooner or later.

1
Ola Claesson | 11 November 2010 - 7:36pm

You haven't lived

until you've seen a real Waterloo Sunset, believe me!

0
Retro Man | 14 November 2010 - 2:08am

I wish I lived nearer Liverpool :-(

otherwise I would have loved to have joined you all.

Come and visit us in London next time, Ola!

1
Hannah | 11 November 2010 - 7:27pm

Dear Hannah

I´m sure I will someday. You tweet a lot about baking cakes and I like sugar almost as much as I like The Beatles. So whenever I go there I will definitely let you know. :-)

*big warm hug*

1
Ola Claesson | 11 November 2010 - 7:40pm

*squeeze*

0
Hannah | 11 November 2010 - 8:43pm

I'm sure I speak for everyone Ola.

We are really, really getting excited at the prospect of meeting you and your mates, roll on the 19th.It will be dead sound La.

0
Pencilsqueezer | 11 November 2010 - 7:16pm

All the bases covered

sounds a great itinerary! If the sun is shining and the sky over the Mersey is clear and blue there isn't a more beautiful city in the land.

Incidentally, I haven't seen it but there is a Astrid Kircherr exhibition of her photographs, including Beatles ones from Hamburg, at the Victoria Museum at the University on Brownlow Hill- free admission so may be worth a visit.

I will be grinding away at the desk on Hope Street so would love to join you at some point if I can get away - let us know the timings and will do my best. Ola hope you and your friends have a brilliant weekend

0
blueboy | 13 November 2010 - 12:40am

That exhibition sounds like something we should visit - thanks

I know where Hope Street is. Have been to The Phil and the huge cathedral, where I talked to a really tall and nice chap who gave me the history of the building. Remember the very foggy view from the tower as well, even if I could barely see the ground.

Hope you can join somewhere along the tour. Allegedly Paddy´s script is now closing in on fifteen pages. :)

0
Ola Claesson | 14 November 2010 - 11:32am

A mini Massive (European) mingle

I do have a long script, but I'll cut it down. (Hey, it was broadcast on Radio Merseyside in 2007).
I suggest Ola and the kids head to the Astrid exhibition and we'll meet them there probably about 3ish and head across the top of town. See the agenda above.
We'll aim to get to the non-Beatles related Rigby's boozer for about 7ish. A copy of the current edition will be on the table.
Further details tomorrow. Too late and too engrossed in an audio book.

0
PaddyH | 15 November 2010 - 1:45am

If we can find the exhibition

I went to an (also Beatles related) exhibition during my last visit. Maybe it´s the same place?

How about three o´clock at the Lennon sculpture on Mathew Street? When will you be able to show up, Paddy?

0
Ola Claesson | 15 November 2010 - 11:44am

The Astrid exhibition is

The Astrid exhibition is hosted by the Victoria Musuem and Gallery (Brownlow Hill) and started in the summer and runs until the end of January.
Details: http://www.liv.ac.uk/vgm/Astrid%20Kirchherr.htm
How to find it: http://www.liv.ac.uk/vgm/map.htm
I'll meet you outside this museum at 3pm. I'll produce an itinerary with contact details etc this evening.

0
PaddyH | 15 November 2010 - 2:27pm

Got it!

I think. :)

0
Ola Claesson | 15 November 2010 - 5:16pm

Have a great time, Ola

Being on the other side of the country (and busy mixing on Friday, anyway), I won't be gatecrashing this get-together, but I'm sure you'll all manage to have fun without me :-)

Incidentally, I'm assuming your visit isn't a day trip (regardless of how appropriate that would be!), so if you should find yourself at a highly unlikely loose end on Saturday evening, the Beeb are showing the Branagh Wallander again. I'm watching, slightly less enthralled than by the real thing - enjoying the colours, ignoring the over-acting and pronunciation.

0
nigelthebald | 18 November 2010 - 12:20pm

What time are we talking?

I'm due down in London on Friday evening, but would love to pop over to the Pool and say hello.

0
Grant | 14 November 2010 - 8:06pm

Earlier tour guides

If anyone wants to get across prior to 3pm and meet Ola and give him some of the famed Scouse hospitality prior to our walking jaunt, post below. Let's give the lads a true taste of Merseyside's welcome.

0
PaddyH | 15 November 2010 - 1:47am

Final itinerary

3pm: Meet outside the Victoria Museum and Gallery on Brownlow Hill. http://www.liv.ac.uk/vgm/map.htm
Weather permitting, we will then take Ola and the chaps to the Collegiate School on Shaw St to show Paul and George's old school.
3.30pm: back across the top of town to John and Stu's art college and LIPA (Paul McCartney's fame school - Liverpool ECHO), maybe a scoop in Ye Cracke.
Down the road then to the Jacaranda, may be a scoop there.
Back down to Whitechapel and the Cavern Quarter and then down across Victoria St and Dale Street to Rigby's.
7pm: Mini Word Massive Mingle in Rigby's. Magazine on the table, no homework unless you want to make some Scouse-centric CDs for the lovely Scandinavian chaps.
Those coming in on train for the meet-up, Rigby's is very close to Moorfields Station.
Those travelling in by car, be aware that we will start at the top of own and finish near the waterfront, so choose a car park somewhere in between or park near the bottom of town and walk up for the start.
Email me from here for further details, directions and a contact number.

0
PaddyH | 17 November 2010 - 1:16am

Looks like I might be able to squeeze a quick visit into Rigby's

Am burning some snide scally CDs in anticipation.

Paddy - will be driving down from Preston, hopefully getting into town around 6. Where are you likely to be then? PM with mobile number if you like.

0
Paul Waring | 17 November 2010 - 11:04pm

Swede dreams are made of this

Myself, and Doods, are going to be carrying a picture of our favourite Swede, after Ola and the lads, of course.
Photobucket

0
PaddyH | 18 November 2010 - 2:10am

Indeed

And a retort to Mr Hepworth's recent suggestion that you can't idolise someone younger than you. Oh yes.

0
Doods | 18 November 2010 - 2:48am

If only England could find one player

with even half his class I'd be happy - Carroll, Terry, Barton, Cole, Rooney - you're not fit to lace Henrik's fotbollskor!

1
Retro Man | 18 November 2010 - 10:50am

Who is he?

*ducks, gets coat, shaves head and changes name to Torben*

0
Ola Claesson | 8 April 2011 - 2:09pm

Oh I want to go!

I was in the 'Pool yesterday and popped in to that Astrid Kircherr exhibition. It is small but very lovely. Definitely worth a visit. Have a fab time, you crazy kids.

0
hazeyjane | 18 November 2010 - 12:36pm
