Advice: Prepare For Rain - Lots Of Rain
You may be lucky and have a sunny time throughout, but either bring enough changes of clothing to cater for a couple of soakings/muddyings a day or else get used to the idea that you will look dishevelled at some point if it's a wet-un.
A tiny tent is no place to be when it's pouring down. Bring a bigger one than you need just for sleeping.
Bring a flag or some such to identify your pitch from afar.
Toilet paper and bottled water. Bring plenty.
Torches. One each plus spares and plenty of batteries.
Don't eat or drink (or smoke) anything liable to make your bowels loose.
Keep valuables locked in the car or about your person at all times.
Get on neighbourly terms with the other campers around your pitch, unless they are really dodgy, in which case relocate.
Don't take the brown acid, man.
That'll do for now. Enjoy yourself and don't forget the sunscreen.
This is Glasto #10 for me
First one in a campervan though.
If there's enough of us, how about an impromptu Massive mingle somewhere congenial like Avalon Cafe or Bourbon Street??
I must be the only person in the world...
...to have accidentally found myself with a ticket.
Don't ask, the story is a boring one but it involves doing a bit of stewarding. Not got good hours for Sat & Sun evenings but a fragment of complaint you will not hear from my lips.
And yes, if I'm going it *does* mean it's going to pee on us for 4 days. Sorry about that.
Not going, but...
as someone with an aversion to festivals, the nearest I'll get is an invitation to my pal Jeff's to watch it on his big telly (his house is closer to Glastonbury than mine, so it'll feel more like I'm there...). That said, I am taking my copy of Nic Roeg's Glastonbury Fayre and my Kingdom Come and Terry Reid LPs to supplement Jeff's Quintessence collection - that way we can pathetically recreate the Glastonbury we never attended but wished we had.
Wretched or what?
Meanwhile, my 16-year-old son is going to Sonisphere with his pals and one of their dads - what advice should I give HIM?
"Ditch the dad
and go nuts"
What splendid advice!
I will tell him that, I really will.
I'm not going this year
but have been to Glastonbury - well it's double figures.
May I suggest a Aspidistra Hatstand special night on Friday to gather any of the massive who aren't going?
Have fun all who are.
Count me in for the A&H
I love Glastonbury but haven't dared go back since suffering an enormous panic attack there in 2000 (I'm not great with big crowds, I was watching David Bowie and it was rammed... Suddenly realised that whatever way I turned, I could only see endless waves off people and no way out)
I'm not going but I'm looking at the forecast.
Anyone want to borrow my waterproofs, poncho, wellies or waders? The neighbour's got an inflatable boat if things get really shitty.
Number 12 for me
My wife's already had a phone call from her sister, who arrived on site today during a deluge and we've been advised to take the wellies. So last year was an aberration and it's back to normal!
We're going down tomorrow (Tuesday) - we always like to have a bit of time before it gets too busy and, since we work there, there's at least 6 hours of the day when we can't wander around the festival.
I'm working on the Sensation Seekers' Stage in Bella's Field. I've no idea about which shifts I'm working, but even if I miss some of the bands I really want to see, I'll still have a great time.
I'm knackered tonght...
I'm knackered tonight, but I'm staying up all night in order to adjust my body clock. I will then sleep tomorrow daytime, so that I'm chipper for the night drive to what will be my 5th Glastonbury. We'll head in when the gates open, and hopefully grab a couple of hours sleep in the afternoon. From there on, it's time for the good times.
There's not as many acts I want to see this year, but perversely I'm quite pleased about that. As much as I look forward to seeing people (this year Paul Simon, Eels and BB King in particular) I'm happy to have lots of free time to roam without feeling like I'm missing someone somewhere who's records I own. Rain of shine, it is going to be good.
As ever...
I'll be staying nice and dry and watching it on the telly. It's one of those events where I think I'd love to go, but I couldn't tolerate camping, mud, rain, crowds etc. Which means going would probably be a bit of a pointless exercise...
Count me in for the Aspidistra Hatstand
The last time I went to Glastonbury we couldn't make it till the Thursday evening. This meant we were camped pretty much in a bog in the pissing rain approximately two miles from any stages. I had a foul time and I haven't been back, but strangely I do miss it.
Viz had a top tip once. Recreate the festival experience by shitting in a bag in your living room and getting friends and family to throw buckets of water over you a random intervals over a weekend. I will perhaps do that while watching telly and lurking in the A and H...
Glasto # 5 for me
heading down in the morning & i'm more than a little excited - i hope that the weather clears up as its not looking good on the bbc webcam at the mo.......
I'm stupily excited about seeing The Walkmen on Saturday evening - never seen them & they look like a great live act.
I have a really good a-z spreadsheet of who is on & stage times etc. if anyone wants one let me know your e-mail & I will forward it on. I leave the office today at 2.00 so will send it then.
Number 10 for me
My FPO insists we go every year. Last year was glorious but even then I knew it was a one off.
I just hope it's not like 2007 when Kasabian, the Fratellis and The Killers played. Christ that was an arduous slog, and the weather wasn't much cop either.
Up for a massive drink if it can be arranged.
Cool
If she insists that you go every year, can she really be described as an FPO?
She bloody well can...
...if Kasabian and the Fratellis are playing.
I used to go every year in the '80s
When I lived in Wales (first half of decade), a big crowd of us would go every year and camp in roughly the same spot. Another crowd from my home town would also go, so some catching-up with old pals would occur, amongst the musical and other activities.
In the later '80s, I was living back in Watford so I'd go with the Watford crowd and catch up on what my Welshie friends were up to.
It was great until a good friend's 18 yo stepdaughter, who was a lovely girl, was killed in a motorway accident on the way home one year. After that he and his wife understandably stopped going, along with all their friends (the Welsh crowd). It just wasn't the same vibe and us Watfordians soon stopped going too.
I've often hankered to go back to see how it's changed, but I can't face camping and roughing it at my age and state of decrepitude. And of course I don't indulge in those "Festival Smoking Habits" anymore, either.
.
I don't generally bother with the TV coverage because it doesn't give a very good impression of what the real Glastonbury experience is, to my mind.
Can I tentatively reassure everyone?
Here in the general Glastonbury area, i.e. the town of Glastonbury, it's not at all bad. Occasional deep-grey clouds and a breeze bringing a chill in the air but the sun has been out quite a bit this afternoon and it's been warm.
Recommending easily peel-off-and-put-away-able layers and comfortable wellies. Going down to the site to set up tomight so may get the chance to report more tomorrow.
