Word Magazine Online

cornishmanc's picture

Just had a look at the online version of this month's Word and as much as I cherish the paper version, if the cost to Development Hell of an online version is minimal, I would be rather partial to also having the virtual one as a back-up for such times when I am travelling and could access it from a hotel.

1

Define "miminal"

Then multiply it by twelve.

Haven't got the SFTW email yet...

I'm a subscriber but haven't got my email yet...........I live in Aberdeenshire does the email take longer to go North :-)

0
Otis J Watermelon | 6 November 2009 - 11:29pm

True Dat

At least we can see the magazine works really well in an online version. Something for us all to think about for the future.

0
cornishmanc | 5 November 2009 - 11:38am

Apologies for being slow...

but what online version?

0
Archie Valparaiso | 5 November 2009 - 11:42am

Check your e-mail

(the one you used when subscribing).

0
Fraser Lewry | 5 November 2009 - 11:49am

I haven't had an email and I'm a subscriber

and my emails not changes well in 8 years

0
Chris G | 5 November 2009 - 11:53am

Then maybe

It hasn't been delivered yet. When you're sending out to mailing lists delivery often isn't as instant as one-to-one mail.

0
Fraser Lewry | 5 November 2009 - 11:56am

No biggy was a bit confused

the postal strike must be hellish for companies like yourselves. I noticed Amazon have switched to DHL yesterday.

0
Chris G | 5 November 2009 - 12:05pm

Amazon

They've been using couriers for international deliveries for a couple of months now, reducing the time it took for my orders to reach me by about half (hint hint).

0
Archie Valparaiso | 5 November 2009 - 1:06pm

Nor me

Unless you mean some survey sent a week or so ago.

0
Archie Valparaiso | 5 November 2009 - 12:58pm

Nope

It was sent this morning, but may take a few hours to reach everyone.

0
Fraser Lewry | 5 November 2009 - 1:06pm

Archie they are only

sending them out to their special friends.

0
Chris G | 5 November 2009 - 1:06pm

Cool

cos I got one.

0
Leedsboy | 5 November 2009 - 3:18pm

Subscriber version

Because of the impending postal strike DH have put up a version of the next issue in case the real one goes missing in the postal backlog. Yet another example of these guys commitment to service and quality !

0
cornishmanc | 5 November 2009 - 11:46am

where is it though?

0
Chris G | 5 November 2009 - 11:49am

Not seen this.

0

Nope

Me neither...

0
Red Umpire | 5 November 2009 - 12:06pm

Got it now

Thanks guys.

0
Red Umpire | 5 November 2009 - 3:42pm

Mine arrived about 30 minutes ago

I assume we're not supposed to publish the link? Looks good, had to resist the temptation to start reading it while actually supposed to be working

0
Humphrey Plugg | 5 November 2009 - 12:16pm

No worries

I'll talk you through the highlights

On the cover: Goth Almighty! Alien Sex Fiend talk us through their five favourite deities.

Inside: Cool Yule! The forgotten man of Velvet Underground breaks his silence.

Reviews: Moore's the Merrier: Northampton's reclusive genius on his essential Christmas comedy DVDs.

3
Albert Edward | 5 November 2009 - 12:17pm

Really? My version seems quite different from yours Alb...

On the cover is Plastic Bertrand - without a beard, but nevertheless surely a high-risk from the editorial team - with a huge spread inside on his new 5 disc box set 'Pourquoi?'

Also inside, Pete Townshend talks at length about his new baroque-opera project 'Dido & Angus', inspired by Purcell and featuring lead roles from Dido and the guy in shorts from AC/DC

Also, 'On The Buses: The Rehabilitation Starts Here' in which Heppo makes the case for Reg Varney as an overlooked genius in the development of comedy in the post-war era, a la Hancock, Tommy Cooper, et al.

Bazza McIlheney goes wildly out on a limb in his column on the theme of 'Daytime TV: It's Where It's At'

And - incredibly - a blistering backlash piece with an unattributed author - who nonetheless slips in enough asides about religion, squirrels, '70s TV and an ability to get through all the day's broadsheets and still actually do some work to give us all a pretty fair idea who it is - titled 'The Wire: Is It Time To Cut It?'

Not sure if it's a classic issue as such, but you can't fault the guys for casting a wide net in a bid to keep things fresh...

4
Colin H | 5 November 2009 - 1:41pm

Dido and Angus

I'd pay good money to see and hear that!

On the topic of Pete, any sign of that book yet? It's been a while.

0
Six Dog | 5 November 2009 - 2:00pm

What book...

...would that be John? His autobiography?

0
Colin H | 5 November 2009 - 2:19pm

The very same...

As referred to by Nessa in Series 1 of Gavin & Stacey

0
Six Dog | 5 November 2009 - 4:01pm

No, sorry, you've lost me there...

...never seen the show. I can, however, say that Richie Unterberger is currently working on a book on the Who's Lifehouse project in its original early 70s (non)incarnation.

Andy Irvine (the Irish music icon, not the car driver) once told me he'd need six lifetimes to do all the creative projects he had in mind. I suspect Pete has the same problem. Who's to say his book will ever be written? And that wasn't a pun.

0
Colin H | 5 November 2009 - 4:12pm

Nessa

was referring to the book Pete had been researching when he got nicked and had to sign the Violent and sex offender register
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Townshend#Legal_problems

0
badartdog | 5 November 2009 - 8:29pm

I'd just like to say thanks for the online version.

Very thoughtful. Goes to show why The Word is a cut above.

Mac users: the link crashed Safari twice, but works fine in Firefox. (Might just have been me.)

0
Adman | 5 November 2009 - 12:30pm

Works in Opera

No probs in Opera on a Mac

0
cornishmanc | 5 November 2009 - 12:33pm

Thanks

Impressed that you guys have done this. Looks ok as well but I have decided to ignore it because a magazine is printed on paper. I'll wait for the issue to arrive. And my family would question why I'm taking my laptop to the loo....

0
Leedsboy | 5 November 2009 - 12:43pm

Seconded

I read Mark Ellen's ed's letter and then decided I'd enjoy the issue far more if I had it in my hand.

Doesn't matter how digitally-aware I am (and I think very), you can't beat the joy of holding a proper magazine in your hand - especially one you subscribe to

1
robram | 5 November 2009 - 6:49pm

Good work gang, much appreciated.

Scary cover though! (shivers)

0
Vulpes Vulpes | 5 November 2009 - 12:49pm

Got mine. Excellent thoughtful work....

Much appreciated.

Is it just me or can anyone increase the text size? Not getting any response when increasing the zoom. I am Mr Magoo

0
Six Dog | 5 November 2009 - 1:10pm

Zoom

What happens if you click on the "pages" themselves?

0
Fraser Lewry | 5 November 2009 - 1:13pm

This foxed me as well.

Double click(?) the page & drag it around to read the bit you want.

0
Adman | 5 November 2009 - 1:29pm

Mucho Gracias chaps.....

...though why my relatively IT phobic skills didn't even contemplate that logically and easy route, I'll never know.

0
Six Dog | 5 November 2009 - 2:02pm

Dum-di-dum (drums fingers)

I've got the "Something for the Weekend" mailout but not the new -issue one.

Er, it's not going to take three months like the Island box, is it? (Yes, it arrived eventually. Thanks for your oar manoeuvres, Fraser.)

0
Archie Valparaiso | 5 November 2009 - 2:38pm

Check your inbox now Archie.

Mr. Hepworth said it was OK to share, so I have forwarded the link via The Word contact tab.

0
Adman | 5 November 2009 - 2:43pm

Hint

Try reading the Something for the Weekend mailout, second item down.

0
Gatz | 5 November 2009 - 2:50pm
el hombre malo | 5 November 2009 - 2:51pm

I wouldn't have thought so

So far, e-mail has been unaffected by the postal strike.

0
Fraser Lewry | 5 November 2009 - 3:50pm

It's arrived!

At 14:42. Only four hours or so. That's not bad going for the Islington-Cadiz run.

(Jinxed. I'm jinxed.)

0
Archie Valparaiso | 5 November 2009 - 4:04pm

How can I pay for this every month?

I'm not a subscriber simply because The Word would never arrive where I live (even if your subscription company could print the address in Chinese). I've had a quick look at the online version and, well, what can I say? It's exactly what I need and have always wanted.

I'd pay double the annual print subscription price if I could get one of these every month and access to back issues. No kidding, plastic at the ready..

..and thank you. Even if this is a one-off, you've made my day.

0
James EB | 5 November 2009 - 3:11pm

Receiving in China

I receive Word fine (usually) in Shanghai... Address written in English. Few issues dropped but who knows if the dropping issue is here or there. Anyway, the cust serv staff have also been very good at either sending a replacement or extending the subs if they've run out.

0
simonb | 6 November 2009 - 3:52am

Missing subs

Fair enough Simon.

Experience with another magazine subscription being delivered to Beijing has been poor. 3 out of 12 issues arriving. Who knows where they go?

China Post has a heck of a lot of mail to deliver. If variations in state-run postal management are anything like variations in application of national law at provinical level, anything can happen.

I guess Shanghai and Beijing are like apples and oranges (or the whore of the east and the heart of the beast)

0
James EB | 6 November 2009 - 12:54pm

Reception in China

Indeed. BTW I recommend getting a PO BOX if you don't already have one. It stays static if you move of course. Plus it seems the mail gets through easier and the address in English is easier to decode for the locals. I also had a a lot of issues of mags (not Word) go missing - they all turned up in one go one day. Something went wrong with the international routing and they'd ended up in Outer Mongolia or somewhere.

0
simonb | 7 November 2009 - 1:14am

I am feeling really left out now

I haven't got a "something for the weekend" newsletter either, this is worse than being at school are you going to throw my shoes onto the M1 out of the bus windows later on! :(
I checked my subscription and it's up to date and everything... you can have my club biscuit if you like....
*goes off to hide in the computer room (again)and play asteroid on the schools electron*

0
Chris G | 5 November 2009 - 3:19pm

Sorry Chris

I've emailed you the link too.
Didn't realise you were still waiting.

0
Adman | 5 November 2009 - 3:24pm

No SftW email here yet

However, I don't think I deserve it as I'm not (yet) a subscriber. I do enjoy the emails though.

0
badartdog | 5 November 2009 - 8:42pm

no link

received this end either yet.

0
mdavies27 | 5 November 2009 - 3:45pm

Dear Mr Hepworth,

Thank you for letting me know in advance of the possible delay in me receiving my December copy of The Word.

I appreciate that these matters are outside your control, and thank you for the time and effort you and your team put into each issue – and you deserve extra praise for supplying me with an online copy of the magazine (and I am more than happy to pass the link to a dear friend when the postman does return to work).

The quality of your magazine, and the sense of community generated by the website (and the actions you’ve taken this month in particular) all go together to make me a happy subscriber.

I look forward to supporting your magazine for many years to come.

Kind Regards

Reno

7
Reno Dakota | 5 November 2009 - 3:48pm

Absolutely...

...agree with all that Reno said. Great work chaps!

0
Gavin Adam | 5 November 2009 - 4:12pm

Bang on

The posting of mag online in this instance was a marvellous gesture of goodwill.

Personally I am very grateful. I suspect it wouldn't happen anywhere else.

Thanks to all at The Word.

2
Beezer | 5 November 2009 - 9:28pm

Splendid!

totally agree with the above

0
James Blast | 5 November 2009 - 5:37pm

thanks adman & Fraser

various emails have popped into my in tray many thanks.
I like the search option it would seem no mention of "egg friday" this month ;-)

0
Chris G | 5 November 2009 - 4:10pm

Online subscription

I too would happily subscribe to a digital edition like this. I only spend a few months a year in the UK and a regular subscription therefore doesn't make much sense.

I guess you might have concerns about piracy, but I'm sure that the threat of being throttled by Lily Allen would do the trick (though can I nominate Kate Mossman to be my chastiser, should I offend).

0
Dipsy | 5 November 2009 - 4:34pm

PDF Copy for subscribers

Thank you very much. Proper thoughtful.

0
bathmat | 5 November 2009 - 4:37pm

Is this in...

...Something For The Weekend #87? Not had that yet, but just so I know what I'm perusing my in box for. Cheers!

0
jezk | 5 November 2009 - 4:57pm

There's two

The regular SFTW mail, and a one-off mail from Mr Hepworth.

0
Fraser Lewry | 5 November 2009 - 4:59pm

Subject: Possible delays to your subscription.

Which I have received.
Haven't got Something For The Weekend yet.

0
Adman | 5 November 2009 - 5:01pm

I get the e-gadget mag iGIZMO

from the Dennis stable, which uses the same "turning page" technology I think. This is interesting in that it is free and iirc carries no or few ads, but is of course effectively one big ad in that it mainly announces products.

The interesting new angle there is that they now produce printed occasional mags, like an HD guide, having established the iGIZMO brand.

Not saying I'd like Word to go such a way, just interested to see it.

0
SpaceBoy | 5 November 2009 - 5:04pm

I'm glad to have this ...

... is it just me or are the last 25 pages blank and red ?

0
dai | 5 November 2009 - 5:14pm

Mine is perfect...

...right to the back cover.

On the inside back cover is the photo captions contest which unfortunately doesn't give the winners for the Frankie Howerd picture. Boo..hiss...it's the bit I always go to first.

0
bigsteviecook | 5 November 2009 - 6:10pm

Ah, it's ok now.

Thanks. Refreshed and there they were.

0
dai | 5 November 2009 - 6:23pm

Mine is perfect too.

In every sense.

0
skirky | 10 November 2009 - 5:52pm

Potential bollock dropped?

I too have the link to the online magazine in my newsletter but I do not have a subscription. I now have a free copy of this issue that I do not have to buy at the news-stand. Is this an error or just generosity?

(Incidentally I will in all likelehood purchase said mag next week because I like the free CD and, as has been mentioned previously it is easier to read a paper copy in the loo...)

0
phlanth | 5 November 2009 - 5:14pm

Pedantry/Sarcasm Corner

it is easier to read a paper copy in the loo...

Doesn't it get soggy...? ;-)

0
Reno Dakota | 5 November 2009 - 5:27pm

Is it okay

to pass the link on to the heathen mass of old goths who may not have picked up a 'meatworld' copy of this highly esteemed mag in the past?
It could bring in a few newbs but it could also stop a few purchases, difficult one...

0
James Blast | 5 November 2009 - 5:41pm

I shall quote

From Mr Hepworth's mail:

When your issue arrives please feel free to forward the link on to someone who might like the magazine.

Of course we can't stop you from forwarding the link immediately, but we'd prefer it if you waited.

0
Fraser Lewry | 5 November 2009 - 5:45pm

steady boy, steady....

restraint shall be shown Mr. L

0
James Blast | 5 November 2009 - 9:57pm

Perfect

Thank you guys so much for this. I've been on tour since January, and this is just the kind of thing that makes a real difference when you're travelling.

0
Lucas Hare | 5 November 2009 - 5:53pm

Subscription virgin

Thanks for the email and online copy of The Word. I was a little dissapointed though. As I haven't subscribed to any magazine or paper since I was a kid. I was looking forward to my copy dropping through the letterbox. Tried as I did I couldn't resist having a peep at the new edition. It looks great but I'm going to wait for Santa to deliver my hard copy before reading on this occasion at least.

0
Lunaman | 5 November 2009 - 8:02pm

A big thank you

As I only got my subscription copy of the last issue about a week ago I think this is marvellous, so again, thanks from me.
And a James Ellroy interview too!

0
Carl Parker | 5 November 2009 - 8:06pm

excellent

A flick through the online edition certainly cheered me up today. I'd pay for this. Premium subscription service?

0
Mavis Diles | 5 November 2009 - 8:06pm

So...

you're giving this one away to non-subscribers, so they'll subscribe in future? Or is this a gamble to prove that Mr Hepworth's view on e-readers is correct?

Either way, thank you. Will you be giving the subscribers 1/12 of their money back?

0
Captain Underpants | 5 November 2009 - 8:10pm

Very impressive

and beautifully executed, many thanks indeed! I let my subscription lapse because my interest in music has waned latterly, and the cover CDs just piled up, unlistened-to. However I like reading about the stories and characters in the wacky world of Rock and associated offshoots, so an online version would appeal to the likes of me very much.

0
Ipsie Dixit | 5 November 2009 - 8:33pm

Very Thoughtful Action...

... from The WORD office.

Much appreciated Mr. H.

What would you like for Christmas?

0
Nicodemus | 5 November 2009 - 8:38pm

Page 41

What's Ron Mael doing on the cover of the McAlmont & Nyman album?

As to the digimag itself, a lovely gesture, very thoughtful, though like others above I feel a strange urge to resist actually reading it until I have the printed copy in my hands. Whether this is because I feel I read too much stuff online stuff as it is and want to savour having the physical magazine in my proverbial sweaties, or just a strange nostalgic attachment to printed media that makes me think it superior to online content, I'm going to have to discipline myself very firmly until my special glossy treat comes plopping through my slot.

1
Cadabra | 5 November 2009 - 9:14pm

Have a

FNARRRR!!

on me.

0
Captain Underpants | 5 November 2009 - 9:19pm

Thanks

Not sure why I went all Finbar Saunders at the end there, it just sort of happened...

0
Cadabra | 5 November 2009 - 9:22pm

Subs email

Many thanks for this. There aren't too many publishers who would do this and it is hugely appreciated.
In return I'll definitely be purchasing a few subscriptions as Christmas presents.

To anyone thinking of just making do with the E edition .. don't! Support your local Development Hell. If we don't buy the mag it'll go the way of beta and Eldorada.

0
McLongWhiteCloud | 5 November 2009 - 9:40pm

As someone who has to pay $10...

...for a six week old issue, I would be *thrilled* to be able to download the magazine for a reasonable fee. Consider my whistle whetted...

0
nicktf | 5 November 2009 - 11:05pm

As Cornish says..

"I would be rather partial to also having the virtual one as a back-up for such times when I am travelling and could access it from a hotel."

I can think of a few other magazines which might be helpful at times like that..

0
Lenny Law | 6 November 2009 - 12:29am

A little glimpse

of the future? Perhaps. A little test? Maybe

1
Sheev | 6 November 2009 - 12:47am

Yes please

Beautifully done, chaps. Real eye candy. A bit slow on the old dongle but I'm in a 3G-phobic Premier Inn in the middle of nowhere so can't be helped. Off to bed now, Smile TV starts in a bit....

0
Graham Johns | 6 November 2009 - 1:48am

Has anyone else noticed the irony....

of David Hepworth's column: ("Whatever comes next in the shape of a machine delivering traditional print products such as books and magazines in digital form to be read off a screen...[won't] work") ?

I know it's not exactly the same, but, still.... :)

Great work on the digital edition, though!

0
Nick | 6 November 2009 - 5:18am

Isn't that intentional?

I thought the point was that he's so confident that e-reading doesn't work that they've given this digital version away for nothing, confident that it won't reduce subscriptions or retail sales.

0
Captain Underpants | 6 November 2009 - 10:08am

Erm,

Haven't they just cancelled the Postal Strike?

0
Richie B | 7 November 2009 - 12:55pm

At least one other mag,

The Week http://www.theweek.co.uk/, interestingly my only other current UK sub, does something of this ilk for its subscribers during postal disruptions.

They do it by emailing those of the subscribers whose email addresses they have on file for access to an e-version; and this week the printed version tells subscribers how to login and update their details for anticipated future problems.

This kind of customer service works, as an old hand like David clearly knows, and I am glad he is extending the vision to the wider non-subscriber group via SFTW.

Reading the e-version I was struck by how much easier paper is, but that seeing the content together in the e-version made the breadth of the mag more apparent, in some way I can't really explain. I don't like reading on laptops, even the lightweight Toshiba R600 I use, and don't yet have a fancy phone/iPhone/tablet etc etc. I think we aren't quite there yet on the technology that will finally take over from magazines but I think I will live to see it.

0
SpaceBoy | 7 November 2009 - 1:51pm

Good move - customer service at its best

ok it means you might not sell as many newsstand copies now, but loyalty has been increased all round I'm sure.

0
Bigsby | 9 November 2009 - 12:03am

up to a point

I read Word online and spent the money I saved on Mojo.

First time in years I've read it. Rubbish, isn't it?

0
Captain Underpants | 9 November 2009 - 10:11am

You mean you're a regular poster and podcast consumer

but you don't subscribe? I shan't tell.

0
Bigsby | 11 November 2009 - 9:04pm

Bang to rights

What can I say? I'm a big fan of newsagents. Support your local shops, folks - you'll miss 'em when they're gone.

0
Captain Underpants | 12 November 2009 - 10:07am

And I haven't read Mojo since I stopped subscribing to that

but it doesn't sound like I'm missing much. Although I do occasionally hanker for the quick thrill of a star-rating - I know it's wrong, but I can't help it.
