Wogan's Weekend Show

David Wright's picture

Is it just me or is Wogan's Weekend Show all a bit self congratulatory and cabaret? It seems his loyal live audience would laugh at him dropping a bag of crisps onstage. Last weekend I tuned in and heard Beverley Knight singing live, what a racket, she should have stayed under the duvet that Sunday morning!
Is it a radio show or a stage show? I think it would be much better suited to be broadcast from the Mermaid Theatre on a Friday night after Friday Night Is Music Night. I'm not actually sure if the latter is still showing, but Wogan's mixture of live music and guests seems to be begging for this time slot. I've no problems with Wogan, I think he's talented and all the rest, but I would rather it was just him and his mic in a radio studio on Sunday mornings and Saturday mornings too.
Who do your reckon will replace Jonathan Ross on Saturday mornings and actually do a live Saturday morning show again?

I so miss the weekday radio

I so miss the weekday radio show. Evans is too manic, too hyper for me.

I would love Wogan to go back to that format, even if just on the weekends. I haven't listened to the Sunday live music show, because I imagined it would be, as you said "a bit self congratulatory".

The live audience idea puts me off, because I believ he is a better broadcaster, than he is an entertainer, if you see what I mean.

Agreed

I do see what you mean, you've hit the nail on the head. Maybe have a listen to the show and see what you think?

I will,

...and then I'll start a campaign to get him into Brian Matthews slot on a Saturday. Wogan doing SOTS? Now there's an idea.....

Maybe

It would depend what flavour they were, pork scratchings would be another matter too!

Pete Murray's Open House.

The format of Wogan's new show reminds me of Pete Murray's Open House although I was only probably 9 or 10 when that show was on. I feel Wogan's new show is poor, totally the wrong format and a waste of his undoubted broadcasting talent.
Parkinson's Sunday show was more suited to the spot with a review of the papers, the week's entertainment and a good solid interview after the news. I wonder what Michael Ball (who basically followed Parkinson's format) thought at being dumped from the slot?
I feel that Chris Evans starts too early - he's too manic for 7 am. Move the show to 8 and it might be a lot better.

Intimacy

Wogan's weekday show worked because the listener felt like he was being spoken to directly by the man himself. The new show makes the listener feel like they are listening in on him talking to the audience.

It was purely selfish - I liked to think that it was Terry talking just to me. The inclusion of the audience makes that impossible to believe. It's as if to say, 'who are these new people he's talking to? and why are they laughing at our private jokes?'.
