Wire

eightbaII's picture

just listening to Our Swimmer... great track, backed on the 7" by Midnight Banhof Cafe.
surely one of the UK's great underated bands of the 80's, seeing as they never appear on any retrospectives?

Outdoor Miner

Can't say I know Wire well but bought this when I was about 12 - didn't have a clue what it was about but loved it anyway.

Both those thing still apply

Excellent group,

As much as i love the first three lps, and the recent rebirth of the band, I have a soft spot for the 80s version of the band, Drill, Kidney Bingoes and the wonderful Eardrum Buzz

154

Blimey!
I almost started a thread about the Wire (punk rock band version) earlier this week, but my kudos is at an all time low. Anyway they were great and awkward, you never knew what you'd get from them. I saw them live at the Splash#1 (see threads passim) and they played absolutely nothing that I knew.
I still dinna ken if I enjoyed it...

Superb band

154 definitely a favourite, but I like it all, really - even the WIR album without Robert has its moments...

Live

Saw them a few years back at a Festival. They were brilliant.

wire are wicked

their best song is Outdoor Miner by a long road

but this is their second best:

What do people think of that whole them attacking elastica for ripping them off thing? I think they definitely did rip them off but that it was pretty much just sampling and Elastica's song was significantly different (not as good though).

Buzz Buzz Buzz

This is the pinnacle of their foray into a sort of mutated version of Pop in the 80s, just delightful. Great video too and can you spot all the (blink and you'll miss 'em) cameos in the video, a who's-who of late 80s Indie Royalty.....

Brilliant band. I love

Brilliant band. I love pretty much all of the first three albums, and bits of the later stuff. Best song for me - "Map Reference" - but all of the songs mentioned are great.

Isn't it nice to have something positive to discuss, children?

Ahead

is my favourite track - there is a great EP with that alongside Serious of Snakes, Silk Skin Paws and Eardrum Buzz.

Their latest album Object 47 is worth getting hold of, a couple of tracks like Mekon Headman and One Of Us are up there with their best.

I think they have often been wilfully obscure and antagonistic to their own audience - so it`s hard to judge what you will get with their next gig or record.

Every now and then on this blog

Well twice that I know of anyway someone asks "What's your favourite song under two minutes?" and I always post this little beauty, all 78 seconds of it.

wire v. elastica

well, seeing as someone mentioned the little spat they had... my other half was a big elastica fan, always playing their stuff.
i had no problem with that... but try as i might i couldn't convince her that they were "borrowing" their tunes from someone else.
i bought her a copy of Pink Flag which is basically elastica's manifesto/career/songbook, and she never mentioned them again.
but did get into Wire instead.

Terrific

I loved this band from the speed thrash of 12XU on the Live at the Roxy album to the minor hype scandal that stopped Outdoor Minor charting and beyond. Good stuff - mostly lost now, must re-invest(igate)

Wire

Great band. Outdoor Miner, should've been number one for about a year.

And didn't drummer Robert Gotobed fire himself as he reckoned he had been superseded by a drum machine?

Yes, and then the three remaining became Wir

can you see what they did there...?!

Fitter Stoke
