Winter Draws On

and the dark nights are coming in. Let's see what's on TV to keep us amused. http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/proginfo/

Sunday 5th October (episode 1 of 3) BBC 1

Imagine - The Story Of The Guitar
The Story Of The Guitar explores the history and culture surrounding the world's favourite instrument and the personal stories of those who have dedicated their lives to it. The series, presented by Alan Yentob, features interviews with some of the greatest living guitar players, including John Williams, Paco Peña, Les Paul, Pete Townshend and BB King.

Friday 17th October BBC 4

Les Paul
The legendary Les Paul – father of the solid-body electric guitar, inventor of overdubbing and multi-track recording, king of the Fifties pop charts and rock 'n' roll icon – tells his own classic rags-to-riches story in this performance documentary featuring a wall-to-wall soundtrack of greatest hits from How High The Moon to My Generation.

Friday Night with Jonathan Ross
This week's guests are Gordon Ramsay; Ricky Gervais; controversial US comedian Sarah Silverman; and there's music from Razorlight performing new single Wire To Wire live in the studio. (Thank god for DVDs - ed.)

Jonathan Ross

That'll be interesting, Ricky Gervais and Gordon Ramsay. Not had them on before, has he?

There should have been a clause in his £m contract that he has to show a bit more imagination than getting his tired old muckers on every week. Don't even need to watch it, you know Ross will take the rise out of Ramsay and he will try and come over all bashful. Then Gervais will take it out of Ross and zzzzzzzzz

Fuc**ng Hell

You are Kidding.

Mind you I'm surprised. It was David Walliams and Matt Lucas last week so Gervais was due a lot sooner.

God I'm beginning to really hate his smugfest.

Springer Bell | 1 October 2008 - 5:16pm

Here's an idea

Don't watch it. Read a book or something. I couldn't care less who he has on because I never watch it. SOunds crap enough though.

When's the Brit Prog programme on? Now you're talking!

Twangothan | 1 October 2008 - 5:32pm

Don't your worry I won't be watching

I've invested in the first 2 Series of Entourage and the first 2 Series of The Shield and that will keep me occupied for awhile.

It's more of a problem with my lovely lady who likes to check out the glam he has on.

And as you must know there is only so much sulking you can get away with.

Springer Bell | 1 October 2008 - 7:55pm

Paco Peña

Someone should tell the Bibbacy 4 PR people that Paco Peña, useful enough a geetar-picka though he may be, is hardly among the world's greatest. In fact, the only Spaniards who have ever heard of him are those who have lived in the UK. (Look up Paco Peña in Spanish Wikipedia and you'll learn he's a fullback, currently playing in the Second Division for Real Murcia - true dat.)

Paco de Lucía or Manolo Sanlúcar, they're the lads you need.

Archie Valparaiso | 1 October 2008 - 5:41pm

Fair play

to Peña, he seems to have cultivated a fairly lucrative career from coming over here. I don't think he has ever made any claims to being the world's greatest guitarist. He is more involved in the dramatisation/production/choreography/staging of flamenco than de Lucia or Sanlúcar. When I saw a production he staged a few years ago it was an excellent show but Peña stayed firmly in the background and made no attempts to take the limelight away from the dancers.

Simon Ford | 1 October 2008 - 6:57pm

Indeed

I saw something he put on in the Eighties and he did a fine job. I was just taking issue with the Beeb appearing to consider him to be the cojones del perro when it comes to flamenco guitar, when he's actually nothing of the sort (and, as you point out, wouldn't himself claim to be).

Archie Valparaiso | 1 October 2008 - 7:33pm

Thank goodness for the radio

Saturday 11th October Radio 2

Marvellous programme that...

...(ahem)...

MarkHagen | 1 October 2008 - 9:52pm

I haven't watched or listened

to Jonathan Ross since he hosted 'Live Earth', when he talked over The Beastie Boys, and virtually every other act on that day (except ironically Ricky Gervais). And h spent most of his time undercutting the climate change message in a 'nothing will make me give up my 150" plasma screen and gold plated juicer' sort-of-way.

It's a small protest but I like to feel I'm doing my bit. And, as Arlo Guthrie would say, if enough people join in, well then the BBC may think it's a movement ... and he'll be returned to the wilderness.
