There's only one one-hit wonder better than Spirit In The Sky. Sweet dreams, Willy.
It's good
and the sexy twangs at the beginning make me want to do a Puerto Rican pimpwalk sexwee, but it is not the best one-hit wonder of all time.
As "Sugar Sugar" by The Archies is the most perfect pop song of all time, it only follows that it is also the loveliest one-hit wonder of them all.
May I draw attention, your honour, to my first piece of evidence...
RIP Willy
Wasn't this a hit too? - if it wasn't, it shoulda been.

She's so tough
was my favourite Willy "Mink" de Ville track
Sad news. Stroll on, Willy, stroll on:
The first album, especially, is full of gems
Like Venus of Avenue D -
and he kept at it, making good records : I'll miss him.
Spooky.
Only last month I got the urge to buy a CD source of 'Spanish Stroll' to replace my aging vinyl copy of Cabretta. Sad to hear that Willy isn't like one of his backing trio, 'The Immortals', but I think he made his mark with style.
Just yesterday I got an even stronger urge to seek out a copy of, er, um, well maybe not. Don't want to tempt fate.
I may have one or two suggestions
I've got a little list
They'll none of them be missed
He's
got a little list.
I Must Be Dreaming
My favourite Just To Walk That Little Girl Home isn´t available on You Tube, but I Must Be Dreaming is great too. And don´t get me started on the haircut.
Keep on dreaming, Willy.
"It's closing time....
In this [beat] nowhere café."
Best first line of the 1970s.
Not to mention the rest
It’s closing time in this nowhere café
There’s no way in the world I’m gonna let that girl
Let her slip away
No I can’t explain just what’s happening to me
I can tell that guy who’s sticking close by her side
Knows her more than just casually
But there’s nothing that I wouldn’t do
No there’s nothing that I wouldn’t do
No there’s nothing that I wouldn’t do
Just to walk that little girl home
Just to walk that … mmmmm
Just to walk that little girl home
Her flashing smile, her searching eyes
Oh a promise it seems of having all of my dreams
Finally realized
But I can’t ignore hey that guy by her side
Now I know he can’t see just what’s happening to me
There’s a look on his face he can’t hide
But I’m telling you there’s nothing that I wouldn’t do
No there’s nothing that I wouldn’t do
No there’s nothing that I wouldn’t do
Just to walk that little girl home
Just to walk that … mmmmm
Just to walk that little girl home
A Big hit
in Spain. It's on the radio a lot. Love it,Me
Sad news indeed
I was aware he had pancreatic cancer and didn't have long. His early stuff from the seventies; Venus Of Avenue D, Mixed Up, Shook Up Girl, Cadillac Walk are a side of punk that's not covered so much now. Kind of lost track of him after "Le Chat Bleu" tho'.
"Hey Rosita! Donde vas con mi carro Rosita?"
Yes, indeed, "Cabretta", "Return to Magenta" and "Le Chat Bleu" are all genuine classics.
The second and last time I saw Willy DeVille live was at the grotty old Main Debating Hall at Manchester University, sometime in late 1981/early '82. There were about ten men and a dog there, and absolutely zero atmosphere. Until Willy took the stage, that is. The epitome of cool. He still gave it everything, and it was a memorable night. Rest easy...
'Miracle' is one of the best tracks ever
Difficult to get hold of but a really great groove with a Mark Knopfler guitar line and the late great Jeff Porcaro delivering a brilliant backing drum track.
