Wibbling Rivalry

Listening to Creedence the other day got me thinking about brothers in rock and their general inability to get on with each other.

The Fogertys had their falling outs, as did the Finns, the Everlys and the Gallaghers. Not sure about the Allmans.

The only brothers I can think of who seem to have got through a sizeable career without a major to-do are Malcolm and Angus Young.

So what about other brothers (or sisters) in rock? How strong are the ties that bind?

Don't forget.......

The Davies sibs, Raymond Douglas (one person) and Dave.
Was it the Bachmans or the Turners?
What about women, aka sisters, are they just less, well, competitive, thinking of the Corrs? I know there was a bro in there as well. McGarrigles? Heart?
And how about the sons of Mrs Doobie? and Mrs Burrito? Mind you, they never seemed to gel either, as line-up changes show. Mrs Scissors' lot seem to have stuck together, tho', no pun intended.

Also

The Sutherland Bros seemed to have clung to each others' bosoms. Also we must not forget the royal family of soul, The Isley Bros.
Over 50 years of brotherly love.
Haven't the Jagger brothers had a stormy relationship with Sir Mick accusing Chris of feeding off his fame?

Ray and Dave Davies

I used to go and see a band whose drummer was related to Dave Davies. Dave would quite often go to the gigs. On one occasion Ray turned up as well. Towards the end of the night, and obviously the worse for wear, the two of them got into a furious argument and started rolling around on the floor. I wondered "how did you two EVER last 20 years in the same band?"

The Wainwrights...

never have a bad word to say about each other. They just write it all in their songs.

Also, I seem to remember that Hue and Cry were a particularly rancorous pair of siblings. On the other hand, there's that shining example of brotherly love, the Proclaimers...

Edgar and Johnny Winter

....always seemed to have got on, played on each others albums, always superbly. The guest appearance by Johnny on Edgar's live "Roadwork" album doing "Rock 'n' roll hoochie coo" after a heroin induced, ahem, holiday, is one of my fave live tracks.

The

Robinsons (Black Crowes) have had their moments.

James and Livingston Taylor haven't always seen eye to eye.

Rumour has it Karen Carpenter used to throw her compact at Richard occasionally too.

It must be difficult growing up together and then having to subsume personalities within the band dynamic (woah, Ned, steady there!). However, it presumably leads to the sort of tension that real creation feeds on; I mean, where would we be without the Gallaghers?

Dave Knopfler

Steve Turner | 24 January 2008 - 12:29pm

That

reminds me of Mr. Hepworth's blog a few weeks ago about bad rock names.

Dave Knopfler.

Still laughing now...
