Why isn't this filth banned?

BigJimBob's picture

I am confused. Arlene Phillips was on Desert Island Discs this morning. One of the tracks she chose was Walk on the Wild side. Because of time restraints the prog very rarely plays the full selected track, so I was struck by the fact that Kirsty chose to play (at 9.20 am) the section with the infamous couplet:

But she never lost her head
Even when she was giving head

Now, apocryphally this passed the BBC censor at the time because he didn't know what the phrase referred to, but clearly producers are not that naive now. Given that broadcaster are usually very twitchy about popular music corrupting the young -remember Mike Reed's ridiculous stance on FGTH and Relax - why does the Beeb turn a blind eye to this song? Has WOTW become such a standard that this reference is ignored?

I also wondered if the massive have any other suggestion of references that have gone under the moral Radar

It was on Radio 4

they let people say 'bum' as well these days

isn't it

"giving head"
I always thought it was bit of a crunching rhyme in an otherwise excellent song, which is probably why I imagine it can still be played, quality will out.
Also (ibelieve) you can swear on radio 4 at any time of the day it's station that treats even children as Adults !

you are quite right

it is giving head. I'll correct it. Bloody hell treating people as adults it'll never work.

BigJimBob | 3 July 2009 - 11:20am

Could be that they treat...

... Radio 4 listeners as adults, and not reactionary moralists. Or the producer just forgot.

And...

they're forever talking about the clitoris and g-spots on Woman's hour. Great show.

Since you've posted that

I've searched up and down the dial for Woman's hour and I can't find it anywhere.

milkybarnick | 3 July 2009 - 11:27am

It's

on at 10am.

That's a priceless comeback milky....

...I can't stop laughing...

I think the assumption is...

... that grown ups listen to Desert Island Discs and any kids in the room wont be paying attention, therefore a term as mild as that is fine.

What about..

What about 'shit'? Anyone know if you're allowed to broadcast that on the radio? I want to play Eels' Grace Kelly Blues on my show next week (local radio - not many listeners) and don't think I can be bothered taking it out.. Is anybody still offended by that word?

No jokes about George Lamb, please...

Lily Allen

Stuart Maconie commented on this the other day when he played the new Lily Allen track (that one about lying in wet patches on the bed having spent ages giving head). He said he was unsure why they blanked out the word 'head' on this track when they could quite happily play Walk on the Wild Side.

You'd think they'd have one blanket rule, rather than setting it on a track by track basis.

I think

that two blankets, rather than one blanket, is prudent when giving / receiving head. Ignore the one blanket rule - that would be my advice.

Was watching a re-run of Only Fools & Horses...

... on G.O.L.D. and they'd removed the line "Black-man's pinch" after Del gets his finger caught in a cabinet door.

It's an abosulute mine-field, it seems...

Was No-one Is Innocent banned?

Can't imagine Ronnie Biggs 'singing' the praises of the Moors Murderers "God save Ian Brady, even though ee's orrible and ee ain't what you call a lady" or "Nazis on the run". It was a hit though.

Shame it wasn't the other Scottish presenter

then a headline could have read

" Wark on the wild side"

Jimmy Saville

Back in the early Eighties, one Saturday morning, Jimmy played Sid Vicious' My Way, complete with its 'And now the end is near / You cnut I'm not a queer' line. I don't think anyone noticed.

Captain Underpants | 3 July 2009 - 5:10pm

Cnut?

the bloke who tried to hold the tide back?

0
Sheev | 3 July 2009 - 6:44pm

Here's two for you

At 1:20.. "We're gonna drive this fuckin' convoy.." which repeats throughout all the choruses. And no-one ever noticed.

They might, of course, be calling it a "truckin' convoy" but I don't think so.

And also..

This version occasionally gets played on Radio 2 by mistake. Second chorus, listen carefully.

Also...

2:30(ish) - "Golly baby, I'm a lucky c***"

0
Paolo Meccano | 4 July 2009 - 8:23am

Blimey

how did they get away with that?

I think there's a 'happy fucking fucking happy talk' at 2.50 as well.
