Why doesn't Music Day work in the UK?
Posted by Simon Ford on 15 June 2009 - 2:29pm.
Next Saturday is Music Day. Across much of Europe it's normally a pretty fine day with bands playing for free all across town. Obviously, it varies from town to town but most towns make a good effort.
Why has it never taken off in the UK? Is it the weather? Is it because it often clashes with Glastonbury? Are there too many regulations? Can we just not be bothered? I always think it's a bit of a shame....

Fete de la musique
It is happening at my local in Hitchin - mind you, the Guvnor is French!
may be UK pop music
doesn't need state sponsorship?
Maybe it does
Anyway it's local funding. How many people on this website could name a local band? Probably not many. I think it's a shame there's not a day in the UK where everywhere you turn there's local bands playing.
the music pubs of new cross
seem to be doing alright without too much subsidy and soem fo teh bands even get mentioned in Word. Having said all for local festivals just a bit wary of french style state registed pop music it will be all a bit worthy.
We do our best...
Sunday July 5th, Christchurch Park in the sweet, sweet candy town of Ipswich. Free entry, 6 stages across the park plus an acoustic tent. Now in its 18th successive year and attracting around 20,000 people on a good day.

Sounds pretty good. Thanks for mentioning it, probably wouldn't have come across it otherwise.
South Ken Delta
Talking of South Ken - a couple of times there's been a busker at the tube station who does a nice line in slide/bottleneck guitar. Mournful tunes serenading the jaded commuter and the confused tourist alike.
