Who, what, why?

Help Please

I suppose I could look it up but well you lot are all so brainy and well read I thought I’d try here first, so here goes.

Does anyone know why “Baba O’Riley by V’ Who” is so called? I downloaded their “best of” (only £3.99 from Amazon for 20 plus songs!) the other day and so was listening to this and of their other corkers. But couldn’t see why, what everyone under the age of 25 calls “that one off CSI New York” isn’t called “Teenage Wasteland”? Any Ideas?

Ps. Is it just me or is the way the fiddle and the synth. mix together simply ace?

According to Wikipedia...

"The title of the song is derived from this combination of the song's philosophical and musical influences: Meher Baba and Terry Riley"

So there you are.

Isn't it something

...to do with Townsend's guru at the time being called Meher Baba?

I think that's right

and certainly parts of the song have something in common with Terry Riley's minimalist masterpiece Rainbow in Curved Air so I think we're there chaps. This is like an edition of Round Britain Quiz!

It is still...

...one of the most extraordinary records ever made. Thanks as much to Glyn Johns as anyone.

No doubt

about it is a truly great record. Much overplayed of course..my 17 year old hip-hop crazy son never fails to react (positively) when this record comes on.. oh and a very modern sounding recording it is even after all these years. the synths the power chords, wonderful drumming and possibly Daltreys greatest moment. Discuss!

Could it be that

the fiddle bit is arranged by Moon?

As far as Who arrangements go Entwistle's work on Quadrophenia put's the album at the top of the pile of the Who's work.

That synth intro

Wasn't there something about the synth intro being an `interpretation' of all Meher Baba's personal info translated into musical form? I remember reading something along those lines, one of Townshend's new age-y affectations of the time.

If so, presumably one of those enterprising Nigerian chaps that keeps sending us e-mails will be able to set-up a piece of software to decipher the synth intro and so gain details of Meher Baba's bank account and pin number....?

My theory...

All rock music stopped advancing at Who's Next, particularly Baba O'Riley & Won't Get Fooled Again.

I think I read that...

the name comes from Meher Baba, Townshend's guru, and a Mrs O'Riley who was his cleaning lady. I'm sure the 'Baba' part is correct, but the 'O'Riley' bit I'm not so sure about...
