Who wears hats these days?

Do hats help the groove or does the groove make you wear hats?

What are your favourite uniforms/attire in rock and pop?

Dunno bout the best........

......but Earth, Wind & Fire used to annoy the bejasus out of me with their billowing robes and anodyne funkateering.

Retropath2 | 5 August 2008 - 7:26am

Anodyne funkateering????

Forget the "billowing robes"; surely this is simply joyous pop music at its most glorious...

nigelthebald | 5 August 2008 - 8:17am

Spat alert!

Noodly nonsense, 2 trumpets and my secret fear they were serious. Sun Ra for pre-teens.

Retropath2 | 5 August 2008 - 8:43am

Spat declined.

Wouldn't it be boring if we all liked the same stuff? But pray tell : what's the optimum number of trumpets? (If answer is "none", I may have to reconsider the title to this particular entry...)

nigelthebald | 5 August 2008 - 9:01am

By the way,Retro,

would it have helped or hindered if they'd been wearing hats? I like a hat myself, but then check my handle...

nigelthebald | 5 August 2008 - 9:07am

Sorry, Nigel, not saxy enough.

I sensed a sudden addition to my Gilbert O' Sullivan and Supertramp trollity on the horizon; it can get lonely under this bridge. (Actually, my response was 2 pronged, as I was hoping to draw out someone who could explain Sun Ra to me, as what I have heard to is unlistenable claptrap. Too.)
Trumpets, tho', that's a good question, not least as I have been guilty of an across the board antipathy to to the instrument in days gone by, probably not lifting until hearing Patti by Scritti Politti, with its sublime Miles Davis solo. Since then I cannot get enough, whether muted textures drifting thru' Willard Grant Conspiracy soundscapes, Chet Baker, the Memphis Horns or the mariachi style trumpet frenzy of Chumbawamba, I love it all. Except 2 trumpets without a reed to contrast them, which seems unique to E,W&F (and thus, by default, the horns on the Phil Collins records provided by same) Unison trumpets require sax. Probably no more than prejudice but it works as a rule for me.

Retropath2 | 5 August 2008 - 9:16am

Admittedly,

they're miming, but there's certainly at least one sax (being waved around) at 0:26, and doubtless thereafter. You're right, though : can't beat a bit of sax. (Note to self - must get round to doing that typing course.)

nigelthebald | 5 August 2008 - 9:42am

Sorry, Retro,

the above was meant to be a reply, not a new comment. And I must say I'm with you on Sun Ra.

nigelthebald | 5 August 2008 - 9:45am

Your greater knowledge etc

Do you know I had never further investigated the E,W&F brass section beyond Phil Collins album sleeves.
Obviously not mine, like......

Men Without Hats

They didn't. As the name implied.

Am I allowed to mention Jamiroquai here?

Thought not.

Hats are great

Except the ones that are rubbish.
Has there been a Word best/worst feature on hats in rock? If not there jolly well should be. Noddy’s topper, Dylan’s cap. And Sly Stone knew how to wear a hat. On the whole, hats are great. (And so were Earth, Wind & Fire)

Richard Lowe | 6 August 2008 - 5:28pm

Right behind you

on both counts. Hats are indeed great, in spite of the prolonged attempt to discredit their wearing by [spits] the appalling Jay Kay. (I'm astonished, by the way, that no-one's yet mentioned the great RT's beret.)
And EWF in their pomp could only have been improved on by the addition of a few nice titfers.

nigelthebald | 6 August 2008 - 6:54pm

Mr K Richards

Has a fine hat and scarf combination in recent times - scarf round head under brimmed hat. I also recall him with highly commendable double hattage one time. Mick has done a few toppers - one with US stripes for American tour.

Fred Dibnah

The defence rests.
