Who originated each genre of rock music? And how many are there?

Uncle Wheaty's picture

The recent discussions about Kasabian have clearly divided The Massive i.e. the copying of earlier bands etc.

So who were the original innovators of each genre of rock?

And how many genres are there?

I would suggest that Blondie were the first "new wave" band from 1977 onwards.

Heavy rock

(as in bass/drum/guitar combo with copious distortion and solos)

Invented by Cream in 1966. But then Jim Hendrix stole the copyright and just ran with it.

Good thread.

Heavy metal

Invented by Black Sabbath. Punk rock invented by the Ramones. Everything was invented by the Beatles anyway wasn't it?

Kraftwerk

Almost everything to do with electronic music but particularly techno and all its varients

Eno you would have to say is the first rock musician you can associate with ambient, though lots of others were at it earlier.
