Who knows where the time goes..?

Fraser M's picture

I've just had a call from my wife to tell me she has dropped our immaculately uniformed four-year-old off for her first day at infants school. As demanded by statute, there were tears from both sides of the school gates.

As for me, I am struck by the hoary old cliché of it all having gone so fast. So, in line with my blog title, may I ask for songs about it all going so fast.

Here's Rush (ft the wonderful Aimee Mann) with "Time Stand Still":

(You know you're in trouble when even Rush look youthful.)

My daughter started in Year 6 yesterday

ie the top class in the juniors. Man, it flies by. Let he who is without tears be hounded out of town.

You beat me to it!

although this would always be my choice of song if I wanted a good wallow in emotion.

It's eight years

since my daughter started school, and she had a lot of hurdles to overcome in her first few years in order for that to happen. Her first walk to the school gates will always be one of the best days of my life.

So, suitable songs about it all going so fast?

Only kidding.

What I really meant to post was this:

I had a big boo-hoo this morning

dropping off my elder daughter for her first day in Year One. Oddly, I've never cried before at her starting a new school year. But today... waaaaaah.

Twang Jr

Started at junior school yesterday. Due to the incomprehensible class allocation methodology he ended up in a class where he knew virtually no one. He'd been anxious about it all weekend but he's a sturdy little bloke so we went to the school and queued up, and when we got to the classroom he bravely walked to the indicated table without looking back and sat, pale faced but determined looking, waiting for something to happen. Meanwhile Mrs T and I were unable to speak till we got outside where we quietly had a bit of an emotional. Then spent all day fretting. Needless to say, he came home perfectly happy having won the first of the 50 stickers required to earn the class extra playtime by being polite and helpful. Fuck, I have something in my eye. They get you, don't they!

Sham a ling dong ding

Ah Mr T. how true , how true. And it only gets worse - I swear that in about two minutes time you will turn around and T. Jr will now be 11 years old and making his way to secondary school and you will be getting a text message saying (and I quote) 'It was so much fun ! Tell u more l8r !'.

Any songs about growing old(er)and looking back bring a lump to the throat these days - an ever increasing fascination with mortality seems to come with the middle age baggage dont you think ?

Did anyone see Jesse Winchester playing Sham A Ling Dong Ding on the recent 'Spectacle' - the tear discretely running down the side of Neko Case's face - I had to take a moment to myself I have to say.

And dont even get me started about Abba's 'Slipping Through My Fingers'!

Children growing up, old friends growing older

My 7 year started Year 3 today in Junior School and was un-naturally cheery about the whole thing. Something to do with the fact that he was joining his brother who was starting Year 5 and they were going to be on lunch at the same time so he could "get" him.

I love this song, it`s the last great Rush song I reck. Makes me feel sad though.

How about this? The criminally neglected Chameleons

I dropped youngest off for his first day in the reception class

yesterday morning. 'Bye son, have a fun day' I said. 'Yeah, whatever', he replied. That's that then.
