Who is the band in this photo?

Peter Hilgendorf's picture

I was given this lovely photo by a colleague. He has no idea who it is and kept the photo for the overall quality. The only marking on it is "Steve Wallace 1987 Portfolio Gallery London"

Any ideas?

I bet Mark Lamarr would know the answer...

is that Richard Hawley

sneaking off to join the Longpigs for fifteen mins of fame n fortune?

is it erstwhile film critic Mark Kermode and his band (from TV's 'The Danny Baker Show')?

long tall texans

erm... misspent psychobilly flirtation in the mid eighties. I didn't like this lot (although they may well have been less terrible than some of the bands I did like), but my mate Kevin did, which I how I recognise the photo.

A quick google image search confirmed it.

By the way...

I think the photo might be a bit on the large side.

The Polecats?

They were four and then they were three.

I will defer to Somervilles

better judgment but I thought it was the Dempseys - a psychobilly shuffle group well known in Memphis who also had a part as a backing band in the Walk the Line film. Look very similar but the date doesnt tie in so you are probably right.

Too much of a Blo*dy coincidence

While looking for housemartins badges see earlier post I found this copy of "underground" and was just nicely settled in having a reminish when look what turned up only the same picture.
so you now have more than you'll ever need to know about the long tall texans (the pictures should expand if you click on them)

That is incredibly spooky

To thicken the plot even more, I was thinking about the Polecats' single "Take A Circuit With Me" earlier this morning. Cue Twilight Zone music and swirly Roald Dahl woman.

I'd like to read the article about The Wedding Present

exploiting the English language! (exclamation mark, UNDERGROUND's own)

you'd like to

but "Underground" was designed by a polish art student over the phone. It's the least attractively layout magazine I've seen. It's strangely democratic though as even top "acts" like the weddoes and Moz get crappy side columns with muddy pictures made un-readable by very 80's swirls of colour obscuring the text, the Texans were quite lucky in that respect.
I think I bought it for the tape on the front (can you imagine they used give music away with magazines as once in while treat!)but i spiked my finger looking for this stuff so don't ask to find the tape!

LONG TALL TEXANS

It's the Texans. Mark the double bass player is a friend of mine.
They've been around in Brighton since the early 80's.
They used to busk in Churchill square on Saturday afternoons.
Very nice chaps they are too.
