not so much in what he played, but in Jimmy Page's reluctance to take a solo. You can almost hear him thinking "What's the bloody point? Beck's standing five feet away from me."
I've *never* understood the reverence in which Clapton is held as a guitar player. I mean he wasn't even the finest British blues guitarist... that accolade must surely go to Peter Green.
EC is good enough and with Mayall really defined something new. But JB is on a different planet and knows it. But he's far too cool to brag and modest enough to share the stage.
Flippin heck
Men and their guitars, eh?
As that guy says in the ten rules of rock: the purest form of expression in rock is a three piece band. One guitar player, the business.
As soon as you have two guitar players, you'd better be good enough to justify it cos you lose some of that minimalist cool.
Three guitar players is pushing it. Starting to get a bit ridiculous.
But... NINE?! I had to stop that clip after a few seconds, it's just too comical.
Proof of Jeff Beck's genius contained therein...

And, when Beck brought Clapton on at Ronnie Scott's, he said
"Well, I might as well fuck off home now"; so do we have a self-selected hierarchy?
Page defers to Beck who defers to Clapton (who defers to Buddy Guy)
Are you sure he wasn't taking the michael?!

He was just being nice

Judge for yourself...
Beck is hugely overrated,
Loads of ability, no taste whatsoever. Like one of those failed footballers who becomes an adidas-sponsored ball-juggler.
No taste?
NB I'm not referring just to his taste in bass players ;-)
Here's another!
Nearly forgot this one:
Boring, dull, etc...
Sorry!
Oh well
