Where is Plastic Ono Band?

Andrew Harrison's picture

We don't make a habit of reproducing press releases but this could be interesting:

"MARK RONSON ADDED AS THE LATEST SPECIAL GUEST OF YOKO ONO PLASTIC ONO BAND FOR A ONE-OFF PERFORMANCE.

"The band will now include Mark Ronson, Antony Hegarty, Sean Lennon, members of Cornelius, and Yuka Honda of Cibo Matto at Yoko’s forthcoming London performance as part of the Southbank Centre’s Meltdown Festival, directed by Ornette Coleman.

"The show is on June 14 at the Royal Festival Hall and will be the debut appearance in the UK of Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band.

"Ono, who rarely plays in the OK, will be playing a cross section of material from her whole career, including new material from her forthcoming album “Between My Head And The Sky”, which will be released in the autum. Tickets for the Meltdown show are now available, priced £25 and £20."

(Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band? How many Onos do you need in one band name?)

Couldnt have put it better myself

0
Molesworth | 20 May 2009 - 3:35pm

I'm wondering about the autum myself...

is it some kind of gastric complaint?

0
Patrick Crowther | 20 May 2009 - 4:27pm

You beat me to it

I was going to question the typo.

Surely it should've read "Ono, who rarely plays OK"

Live From Tokyo.

Funnily enough whenever I hear/read the name Yoko, I always think Ono.

My brother was at a recording session with her

a couple of years ago. He said she was lovely, amazingly professional and really brilliant musically. She also told lots of Lennon stories.

However, I can't stick her.

I think

she's good value and I like "listen the snow is falling around" although the galaxie 500 versions the best

What is phrase origin?

On a slight tangent, what is the origin of the 'Where is Beatles Band?' statement question thing? Was it from the NME years ago?

A Google search chucks out some tantalising hints - including at least one reference from this august site - but no real explanations.

0
Con Coleman | 20 May 2009 - 4:18pm

Danny Baker invented it

in the form of a letter to NME from one Samuel K Amphong, praising the Beatles "melodious throngs" and signing off "yours as in rock!"

We should dig him out and get him to write a column (Samuel K Amphong or Danny, either will do).

0

YOU are the Plastic Ono Band

I think was the strap line when the 'Band' (some perspex boxes) was first unveiled in 1969.

I saw Yoko's live show at the Astoria some years ago. (This may be from when that building's structural problems date). She and the band, which featured Sean Lennon, were fantastic. They focused on the late 60s / early 70s material plus her then new album 'Rising' - so a lot of frantic riffing and screaming. As someone once said, perfect for those who find Sonic Youth a little too middle of the road. Excellent.

She also played 'Mind Train' - which a certain Mr. Lewry once described as better than anything in John Lennon's solo canon. Seconded.

I didn't hear about the Meltdown show until after it was sold out. My only reservation would be the inclusion of the dreadful Mark Ronson, however if there are any free tickets kicking around the Word office give me a shout and I'll do the review.

Steven C | 20 May 2009 - 4:27pm

Was also at the Astoria...

... and seem to recall a lot of Black Sabbath pre-show. Great gig. Have tickets for Meltdown and very much looking forward to it. Even Mark Ronson. :-)

I'd be keen to hear how you get on

Post a review!

Tonight, Matthew ...

(for a change) I'm an Eno collaboration.

Gloriously, with Bono

0
Chris G | 20 May 2009 - 5:02pm

By chance I just got a gig email

and there's a band apprently called
YOHO! (the ! is there's not mine which i'll add now!)
More bizarre than that is they are supporting the drummer from the Smiths doing a dj set. When did drummers get to be DJ's?

0
Chris G | 20 May 2009 - 5:36pm

When the musicians they were hanging around with

Got tired of them.

Boom. Boom.

To the best of my belief

the only live UK appearance of the Plastic Ono Band. I've never seen a longer clip.

Quite a line up - Lennon, Ono, Harrison, Clapton, Keith Moon, Bobby Keys, Billy Preston, Nicky Hopkins, Alan White, Klaus Voorman and Delanie & Bonnie's touring band.

It may not be Mark Ronson but hey ... !

0
Steven C | 21 May 2009 - 4:50pm

Definitely

too many people...

0
Black Type | 22 May 2009 - 11:19pm

I should mention that the now legendary Carol From Luton...

...is going to the Ono show. Oh yes.
