When an artist is just right for your mood

DougieJ's picture

Tonight, for me, it's Tom Waits.

Normally far too jarring and discordant for my extended listening, tonight he seems perfect. Why? Who knows?-)

Any other examples of such alignment of mood and music?

About as far from 'jarring and discordant' as it's possible to get, here's a nice cover by Diana Krall of one of my favourite Waits songs The Heart of Saturday Night.

Hi Dougie!

I am actually just practising "New Coat Of Paint" for a gig I have this weekend!

As for my mood, I'm currently on a Dusty Springfield tip. Oh, she's lovely!

The Go-Betweens: My 'go to guys'

Dougie, may have been the events of last Wednesday, but I have been turning to this repeatedly this week.

The Go-Betweens always make me feel good.
Were the footballing events of this evening the root of your malaise?
I sense a couple of years of pyrrhic victorious on the domestic front, or maybe not after Sunday at Tannadice.

You guessed it.

Outclassed again, totally. Could have been more but for McGregor's excellent saves. To be honest, it's quite a relief to be out of Europe completely and not have to plough on in the Europa League. Just not up to it at the moment.

Actually wanted a better result

I actually wanted a sign of life in the SPL from youse the night.
Off piste for this strand, but I recently thought that first signs of a 20 year degradation of quality in the SPL started with the signing of Evander Sno and were emphasised by the move of a quality article like Cuellar to Villa. (Although I was happy about that in another way.)
Can't compete anymore, la.

Dave Evans

Perfect for melancholy moods. Why isn't this guy better known? (Surely ripe for a Word-tracks-down feature. Apparently he lives in Belgium these days...Bob Harris was an early champion.) 'The Words In Between' from 1971 is a bona-fide singer-songwriter classic (IMHO) and 'Sunday Is Beautiful' from 1976 would have been a perfect contender for Mr. H's GLR 'greatest song never played on the radio' spot. Truly beautiful indeed.

The 'Magic Man' in action (sans vocals):

'course, I could do that

I just choose not to.

EDIT - at around 0.23, he gives quite a punchably smug look to camera, it must be said...

DougieJ | 26 November 2009 - 1:42pm

Ah, no...

Overlook the smug look and take heed of the song title. Fear, perhaps, at having one of those revolving lense type contraptions in yer face whilst trying to perfect those difficult hammer-ons and keep time. In all seriousness, I believe stagefright is what keeps the man himself re-visiting the live arena. He still plays...

Painting with Doctor Feelgood

Spent this afternoon painting the living room (how rock n roll is that!)and chose Down By The Jetty (the version with the extra tracks courtesy of Spotify) and Stupidity by Dr Feelgood as my musical accompaniment - mood and music in perfect alignment.
Enjoyed the experience so much I'm looking forward to the second coat tomorrow!

Tom Waits Too

and by coincidence as I power up the laptop - I am listening to the new Glitter and Doom live album. Jarring and discordant indeed. Including 35 minutes of "Tom Tales" - how many omelettes can you get from a single ostrich egg. 14 apparently

Tom Tales

Listened to this when making spaghetti bolognese for 20 people last week. Was very interesting. And I know it was collated from the different shows. But there were bits where he talked about a single point for about 8 minutes. Hardly surprising he tells them off for wanting a song.

Tom Waits is the man. Not THE MAN. That would be bad.

Did you fellas get the CD from Amazon?

I'm really looking forward to it and although I got an email from Amazon on Friday saying it had been posted and another from them today saying I'd saved £2 on the list price of £8.98......I still haven't got the CD.

Got it today!!

Less than £7 quid delivered!! 2 CDs, lovely packaging and a nice little booklet with lots of photos.

Can I be impertinent and ask how much the downloads from iTunes cost?

"Picture In A Frame" at the end of Tom's Tales brought a tear to my eye!

Karen Matheson

Dreadful train journey home last night carried on into dreadful one in this morning, so decided to chill to soothing Celticy Karen Matheson - the album with songs by James Grant. Heart rate slowed. World better.

Good choice.

'The Dreaming Sea' iirc?

Time to fall

It is called "Time to fall" and is quite lovely so I shall try TDS if you recommend it. I discovered her through the recent Mike Harding podcast of the Remembrance Day show featuring war songs - harrowing stuff but also triffic.

Twangothan | 25 November 2009 - 11:51am

Yes, I would definitely recommend it.

Contains at least 4 or 5 James Grant songs, or co-compositions, if memory serves.

Yes, she has a fantastic voice. Most of her work was done with Capercaillie, the Scottish Gaelic-singing band. Apparently she can sing in Gaelic but not speak it! All very soothing stuff.

I always find The Golden Age

I always find The Golden Age by American Music Club extremely soothing when feeling melancholy or stressed.
