Entertainment For Lively Minds
What's on the telly then?
Posted by Beezer on 24 September 2008 - 10:25pm.
Skyplus, Freeview, BT Vision, Setanta, cBeebies etc.
Telly, telly and more telly.
But what's on it? What's actually worth setting arse to sofa and concentrating on? Help me slice through the endless listings and multi-channel choice and cut to the good stuff.
What are your faves - drama, comedy, factual, anything - and where do you find them?
First one to say The Wire gets an electronic kick in the danglers.

Have you considered
The Wire? You may not have heard of it before, but it's really quite good.
Swing 'em
Matthew, your about to get an electronic kicking.
For comedy try Harry and Paul, Mock the Week
For drama, there is a new series of Bones starting on Thursday. I know it's not a patch on the novels but it's interest will sustain you to the end of each episode. This new series starts of in London and goes on up to Oxford University
Would also recommend Only Connect on BBC4 Tuesday, lateral thinking quiz. Hope you find these suggestions useful, and hope you haven't watched them thinking they are really crap and not your taste at all!
Boris
I have been trying to watch Who Do You Think You Are with Boris Johnson on iPlayer all night. It gets so far then packs up. What a silly ass but more loveable. At least I can revisit when the mood takes me, technology willing.
Bruce Parry pukes his way down the Amazon
The only thing distracting me from my box set of "T*e W***e" (season 5) this week has been Bruce Parry travelling down the length of the River Amazon.
He takes the right tone; he's respectful of people's ways, gets fully involved, but doesn't get too earnest and sees the funny side.
On Monday he was involved in a village ritual which involved downing litre after litre of a vile, hallucinogenic liquid in the hope of getting a mind-expanding vision. He didn't get any visions, but he did join in with the rest of the village's adults in violently puking all over the place, while the children looked on stoney-faced. It was an extraordinary scene - prime material for Harry Hill, too. The previous week included a grim look at the unglamorous end of the cocaine trade.
Mondays, 9pm, BBC2; next Monday will be part 3 of 6.
At present
There's not that much on at the moment, but from the present crop: Mock The Week, Heroes (series 3 about to start), Entourage, Desperate Housewives (better than you might think)...erm...there's been other good series this year but not presently airing.
In the
Beany household we are partial to lots of Ghost Whisperer and repeats of NCIS until we get the new series.
The latter contained the classic line about Dr.Donald "Ducky" Mallard, played by David McCallum. "what was Ducky like when he was young?" "He looked just like Illya Kuryakin"
apart from Txxx Wxxrxx then....
Drama - ever reliable and entirely laugh-free Battlestar Galactica
Comedy - Mighty Boosh, Peep Show, IT Crowd, Nathan Barley (the latter bears repeated viewing for the superbly Hoxtonite details from The Nailgun Arms to SugaRape covers and general all star cast)
Music - Friday night music documentaries on BBC4
Guilty Pleasure - The Restataurant - super reality TV foodie porn, Le Manoir in the sunshine, Raymond Blanc's expensive shirts, his intellectual shades and that weird high half-moon table, all completely set up but very addictive 'I'm closing your restaurant ' is the 'You're fired' phrase of choice round our way..
and for the parents
the Charlie and Lola Award - 'hey kids don't you want to watch xxx' for naked adult dictating of child tv viewing goes currently to The Secret Show on cbbc - 15 mins of 60s secret agent cartoon pastiche that is complete monobrowed genius, featuring Doctor Doctor and - well today I'm flopsydoodle .
Charlie Brooker's Screen Wipe
...is back soon. Has to be one of my favourite things on TV.
It's hard to describe and give it justice. The premise is that it's a TV review show, but it's much more than that. Brooker's use of language and tirades and superb, and along with David Hepworth got me to check out The Wire. Look out for it on BBC4 (or possibly BBC2).
Charlie Brooker
ah yes, forgot Screenwipe. The sweariest and cheapest-looking show on TV. Apart from Modern Toss which is hit and miss but Mr Tourette never fails to raise a giggle on our sofa..
Ooh ooh!
When's Screenwipe back on? Anybody know?
