What's not on Spotify?
Just to offer something to counteract the Spotify love-in which seems to be flooding through the media at the moment, I was wondering whether other readers had come across notable omissions from Spotify.
To get you started, here are a few:
- Madness (currently UNCUT cover artists) - no albums except for the Utter Madness compilation
- Ian Dury - nothing except "Spasticus Autisticus"
- Elvis Costello - no "King of America" or "Imperial Bedroom"
- Bob Dylan - no "Good as I been to you"
- Kevin Coyne - only three albums and one compilation
- Vic Chesnutt - only the "Merriment" LP
- Peter Gabriel - none of the solo LPs
- Kate Bush - no "Dreaming", "Hounds of Love", "Sensual World", "Red Shoes"
- Dinosaur Jr - only "Where you Been" and "Green Mind"
- Husker Du - only "Living End", "Warehouse" and "Candy Apple Grey"
- Shellac - nothing!
- Lambchop - nothing pre "Nixon"
- Frank Zappa - nothing!
- Tom Waits - no "Swordfish", "Franks Wild Years", or "Orphans".
- More from masked tortilla.

I reckon there's lots of stuff that isn't on Spotify...
I've found that already (I can't remember which acts though).
Still, what is up there ain't half bad!
considering the amount of back catalogue out there...
...they don't do too bad. I was going to complain about the lack of Tim Finn but have just looked and it seems only Before And After is missing. And I think there were only 17 copies of that sold here anyway.
What's more interesting is the popularity ratings for bands of ..er.."greater longevity". Seems a lot of the modern stuff lags way behind the older material
Are you searching thoroughly enough?
Although some of those you list aren't on Spotify (yet?), others are hidden away in there. For example, King of America is here, Imperial Bedroom is here, and
Swordfishtrombones is here.
So.....
....not currently available in the UK, according to the links....
Ah
They have separate deals for different territories. Those work in Spain, but others I've clicked on here don't.
But strangely
Available in my living room on CD. Funny that!
Artists aren't missing
For the most part it's labels that are missing, not artists, and I'd imagine it's only a matter of time before Spotify come to agreements with the ones they're missing - these things take time, and they can't put anything online without doing so first. For example, the Husker Du and Dinosaur Jr albums you list are there because a deal has been done with Warners, while most of their other titles are unavailable because SST isn't on board yet. As for Zappa, his music isn't available for download anywhere - that's not something Spotify can do much about.
And of course
The Beatles are still not part of the great download/streaming revolution. I think my point is that streaming/downloads are ok, in addition to CDs. What we don't want are for CDs to disappear, downloads/streaming to be the only options, and then you get these gaps in the catalogues...
Funnily enough..

If there's something particular missing...
...you could always let them know.

no PINK FLOYD at all
oddly.
Strange...
I've been having trouble finding anything by Metallica.
Quelle surprise...
Nothing from Robert Fripp either. Most odd :-)
A postrock classic... and an inspired memory
Ah! And no "Spiderland" by those postrock purveyors, Slint. A God-send actually, because "Good Morning, Captain" reminds me of a particularly grueling expedition on the high seas.
Three days into a steamboat journey across the Atlantic, we were besieged by sea-tigers. The beasts wrought havoc, in the process destroying my collection of erotic snuff boxes. Even today, I can barely stand the texture of wet carpet.
AJSx
Elmer Food Beat
Nothing at all by the mighty Elmer Food Beat :(
Also many of Les Negresses Vertes' albums and most of Jean Michel Jarre's are missing, nothing by Spizzenergi (or any of its variants).
Quite a few Mike Oldfields are not there.
Bayreuth 3 by Joachim Witt is there - but not Bayreuth or Bayreuth 2, and only a single track by MC Solaar.
I'm not complaining though - it is impressive how much *is* there, with thousands of new albums getting added every month. A month ago I had not heard of Kyuss, Coal Chamber, Kill Hannah or Telex and now they are all favourites, and I was amazed by how much Ozric Tentacles is up there (more than I can handle, frankly) and pleasantly surprised to find a whole album by Manu Chao's first band the Hot Pants.
More annoying is when an album is there but the upload is screwed up or mis-labelled. Ojos de Brujo's Bari is there, but all the tracks are only 30 seconds long. Must get round to pointnig this out to Spotify - they can't be expected to check every single file that gets sent to them so have to rely on feedback from us punters.
Celebrate the available!
Where else could you find Elaine Paige singing Radio Ga Ga, complete with old radio excerpts?

in New Zealand
most things!
Call me old fashioned but...
...am I alone (at least among the massive) in CHOOSING not to investigate this Spotify?
I take a view - which affects, not to my knowledge detrimentally, a lot of decisions I make, consciously or passively - that 'life is too short' and that things which may end up consuming certain amounts of time will, inevitably, take time away from other things which I enjoy doing. One has to leave room - physically, mentally, spiritually etc.
Examples of choices which possibly seem eccentric being that I don't, for instance, own a mobile telephone/do texting; I've never watched most of the iconic TV dramas, past or present, that people talk about (Morse excepted); I almost never go to the cinema; and I've never listened to any album by, for instance, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Elvis Costello nor read any books about them. (I do, however, know the broad outlines of their careers and the essence of what they do - which is enough). On paper, then, I almost shouldn't be here and yet I find Word-sville and the cut of its jib a spiritual home indeed!
But I'll still happily leave Spotify and whatever comes along to replace it next week and the week after, ad infinitum, to others. It's not so much being a member of a cultural flat earth society as choosing to believe that, as it were, the world may be flat, may be round, may be square, but either way you don't really mind - as long as you're happy enough where you are...
So
the answer to who's not on Spotify is Colin H. And Led Zeppelin
Nice one, Sheev!
Yes, we're all doing fine over here - Percy's got a barbecue going, Jonesey's at the whist table and Jimbo's practising his violin...
None of my albums are on Spotify
...but then I live in Canada. Sigh.
NME Cassettes
I've been off sick for a week now and am getting bored now so I've been looking for downloads of the classic NME cassettes when I called off my search after only finding 5 (I'll have to do them myself!) I decided to recreate them with Spotify playlists. I've only done the two country ones so far but I've been very disappointed that about half the tracks are not on Spotify - and I chose tapes that didn't have rare tracks on them.
