What was the first song you heard this morning?
Posted by daddyclark on 25 October 2011 - 9:20am.
I flicked on 6music while making the first brew of the day and this was playing...
..I thought this was quite apt because I'm on a weeks holiday and was able to "throw the curtains wide" without the usual dread. I get to spend the day with my girls so it should be a good one and "see me right". Hope you heard a good one too.

Not quite the first one
but while trudging up the hill towards the station "Fall on Me" came on by REM. I'd never heard it until Bob linked to it recently post the REM split. It proper cheered me up.
Cheers Bob, and cheers Shaun Keaveney!
AKA....What a Life - Noel Gallagher
On Absolute Radio when I put the keys in the ignition.
Not bad but a weaker track on his very decent album.
1st song on the ipod this morning
was this belter. Set up my day a treat so it has;
Paul Nicholas - 'Dancing with the Captain'
.
XTC : Playground
Prompted by posts read on the blog last night, I've listened to the whole of Wasp Star over breakfast. Can't see why Andy Partridge deosn't rate it. Should be able to fit in both discs of Aerial before turning in to work. Lovely.
XTC's Science Friction
Was my eye-opener this morning.
well -
when I was making breakfasts I found myself singing Spanish Bombs by the Clash - no idea why, but our kitchen always puts the Clash on my internal jukebox.
Then whilst reading Dr Volume's blog about gig promoters in Salford I got Costello's You're Nobody in this Town.
Then I read this blog and thought I'd see what came up on shuffle. It was Atomic - sadly the Sleeper version. I'd turned it off by the third tish of the intro.
Can't remember what was on the radio at 6.50
But the first song on my ipod was I Wanna Go To A Disco by Ricky Wilde.
They Might Be Giants
"Birdhouse in your Soul". It made me very happy.
I'm not surprised
Happy song. I remember it was the first song I sang to my goddaughter when she was smaller than my forearm.
Funnily enough, we were singing it again last Christmas. She is now 18.
Belle And Sebastian
I Didn't See It Coming
Life is a Pigsty by
Life is a Pigsty by Morrissey. Nice, uplifting start to the day.
The Bare Necessities
from Brian Wilson's excellent "In the key of Disney" album.
Lovely old time Disney nostalgia, with a twist of Beach Boys, gotta love it! :)
This beautifully carved,
exquisite slice of bangy minimalism. If Wlliam Carlos Williams had made techno, it would have sounded like this:
Baby I Don't Care
by Transvision Vamp (on the radio). Elbow would have got me out of bed quicker as I would have leapt up and out to switch the radio channel over - especially to turn off that particular track.
Streets of London
It happens to be the first track on a compilation I got given for christmas last year and which hadn't really bothered with until I realised that for all this talk of Pentangle, and of 'Needle of Death' recently it turns out I actually owned a couple of the songs I'd been reading about so avidly. The second track, incidentally, was 'Colours' by Donovan, which also handily answered the question asked about 'None more Dylan?' on another recent thread here. So, all in all, quite a productive morning.
Jimmy Dewar
singing in my head on Robin Trower's 'About To Begin.' Haven't played it for yonks but it sounded so good in my head whilst I got ready for work. Got in the car, found it on the ipod and spent the first few minutes of my long journey being soothed and massaged by Jimmy's gorgeous voice. It made me think about the great singers from that era, Jimmy, Frankie Miller, Paul Rodgers, Jess Roden...all came out of an R&B/Blues background and, to this day, nobody from these isles has ever sung better.
Elephant Stone
I'm on a bit of a Stone Roses kick at the moment (since getting a ticket!).
Started the car's engine...
... and got the CD that was in the player: "Sky Is Falling" by Queens of the Stone Age.
Thus far the sky remains resolutely in place.
Air & Neil Hannon - Between Waking & Sleeping.
Which would have been rather apt if I hadn't already been out of bed nearly 3 hours.
Nice tune though.
The Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping
At 5.20 this morning on 6 Music.
Isn't it a bit early for this sort of thing?
You obviously don't work in retail.
The Co-Op were selling mince pies on September 3rd.
Best before: October 12th.
In the car...
...Magical.
Ian Matthews 'So Sad'
I'd never heard this before
it's rather nice. :)
Patti Smith
Gloria.
Try waking up to anything else.
Awake early...
...and staying with family, who were "laying in", so listened to the Steve Mason 'Boys Outside' LP first thing in bed.
Driving to work
Had a Paul weller Cd on in the car, first song Empty Ring (22 Dreams), splendid stuff!
Russian Circles - 309
proper heavy post-rock. Have it as a promo to review and it's v good indeed.
Early on the road
to the sounds of Steely Dan's "Doctor Wu"
Throwing Muses
"Colder".
Playing all the albums in order as the soundtrack to the morning drive to work ahead of seeing them next Wednesday, and today was "House Tornado" day.
The CD in the car is on "random"...
...so a different treat every morning. Today it was Sparks - Do Re Mi. Nice...
African Night Flight - David Bowie
from the much maligned, Lodger, followed by the rest of the album. Listened to under headphones whilst walking the dog along a beautiful canal just before sunrise.
I've just finished Peter Doggett's book on Bowie in the 70s. It was OK but I was looking for more insights than I found. I thought his prose only really sparkled describing Low & 'Heroes'. He span the same line about Lodger not being any good. I think it's a lot better than he made out.
Woke to random play off the laptop, as usual at 5am.
First up was "Frozen Beef (Come With Me)" - Mike Keneally & Beer For Dolphins.
Next was "Hola" - Xavier Saule.
After that "Black Sands" - Isotope.
Next the first actual song: "Sledgehammer" - Peter Gabriel.
After that "Ghost" - Neutral Milk Hotel.
Finally I heard "The Maid Of Coolmore" - The Bothy Band and then turned the music off
The theme tune to ITV's 'Loose Women'
It's a new arrangement too!
'C'mon Everybody'.....
.....Eddie Cochran.
Dion - Runaround Sue
I'm at work compiling a New Years Eve album. Every now and again my job is actually fun.
