What song is in your head at the minute?

DrJ's picture

For the past few days I can't get The The's The Beat(en) Generation out of my head and I'm singing it to myself at every opportunity.

Anyone else affected by an earworm at present?

Right this second?

It's Mr. November by The National.

Hazards of Love 2 (Wager all). (Decemberists)

Am planning to reach for the guitar when home and work it out. The whole album has been buzzing around my brain for days, bewitching it in the process, though I made the mistake of noticing the lead singer sounds a bit "Green Day" on occasion.

nicktf | 28 April 2009 - 9:11pm

Could choice,

Track 4 is my favourite on that album at the moment.

"Trust in Me" - Siouxsie and the Banshees

I kept singing this today, so I just went to listen to it. It's a brilliant cover of the wonderful Jungle Book song.
Siouxsie and the Banshees are one of the best examples in pop of a "fully realised concept", aren't they? Even the shimmery, glassy bit at the start fits perfectly. One of the greatest covers by anyone, ever. It's on Spotify.

Poker Face

Yup, the Lady GaGa tune. I'm a little bit obsessed with it right now, and the chorus just keeps going around my head.

0
SimonL | 28 April 2009 - 9:34pm

it's a little belter

of a pop song, so it is. And 'Just Dance' isn't far behind.

Currently on the Internal Jukebox is John Lennons version of Stand By Me

0
ivan | 28 April 2009 - 11:43pm

Yup.

The album's pretty good too.

And, yes, there's that chorus again....

0
SimonL | 29 April 2009 - 1:00am

The thing with that Poker Face chorus is...

...that you expect her to repeat the "Poker Face" line which has the nicest melody, but you get that male voice singing something inaudible. It frustrated me at first - REPEAT it! - now I like the fact she didn't.

By the way, how do you make Lady GaGa cry? Poke her face.

Boney M

That male voice bit is a sample (apparently) from Ma Baker, by those evil Ear Worm masters Boney M.

Ra Ra Rasputin sometimes appears in my head, or their version of Painter Man. It would be cool if it was The Creation's version instead. But no, sparkly silver disco sensations it is....

SimonL | 29 April 2009 - 10:40am

How apposite...

I'm working with a lovely Swedish girl called Veronika this week. Picked her up from Heathrow Monday morning. Track 1 off Elvis Costello's Spike hasn't left my head since. DRIVING ME NUTS!!

0
Stephen Hanley | 28 April 2009 - 10:01pm

Track 1?

This Town? As in 'you're nobody in this town 'til everybody thinks you're a bastard'? That's strange cos there is actually a song on that album called Veronica. There might also be one called Pedantic Git - or was that a B side?

0
badartdog | 29 April 2009 - 11:29am

Close

Pedantic Git was actually a C side, pressed right on the edge. That Costello - always taking it one step too far.

The Sadies

I saw the Sadies in Vancouver last month(check em out on Youtube) and 'There's a Higher Power' pops into my head whenever my subconcious Juke box reflects on that night.

This thread could go on a while

Because I'm surely not the only one top have a song constantly in my head. But earlier on it was Surfing Bird, but now it's R.E.M.'s Camera.

Terry Scott

My Brother.

Just poured myself a cup of coffee, and as I reached for the sugar, a line from the song came out of nowhere...

"Who put salt in the sugar bowl?"

...and now it's stuck on repeat in my skull.

kinkywolfgang | 29 April 2009 - 7:53am

Oh god...

...now I've got the theme to "Terry and June"

Like a whirlpool, it never ends

If anyone cares to join me in my up-another-semitone march of misery, here you go.

It's actually a brilliant record - one of the best singles in the history of ever. Apart from being Hal Blaine's finest hour, the chorus is cursed with Bernard Hermann In The Shower Screechy Strings™ that unravel your brain and tug it jerkily out of your ears like a piece of twine with big knots in it. And again. And again.

The problem is, when it's over, it's not. Your head just keeps playing it over and over again. Even when you're listening to something else.

"Catchy" doesn't come close; it's a 7-inch swine-flu pandemic.

On Raglan road

Saw Costello with The Brodsky Quartet on friday night in Birmingham and they did a stunning version of this song. The only cd version I have available is the Van Morrison one which is still great but has a different dynamic.

I hate myself....

Mull of Kintyre is skirling between my ears, prompted by a return from the Isle of Mull, a different place entirely, but prompted by my expectation for people to immediately sing me some of that shocking song when I say where I've been. "No not that one........."
(Not that we went for this reason, honest, discovering only by chance that it was the Tobermory Folk Festival over the w/e, let me give a "personal response" to the dismal hour we spent in Tobermory, a small seaport as attractive as I have visited in the hebrides, knocking Portree completely into touch. But not this weekend, as the town had been taken over by the reddest of faces and wobbliest of feet. Bellowed "I'm a wild rover"esque songs were being relayed noisily across the harbour and most of the shops and businesses had closed up shop. A shocking state of affairs, and I am sure I would have been a Judas if asked whether I was a fan of folk music..... Sorry, thanks for your time, I just had to get it off my chest!)

Love comes to me

is in my head all the time, though to be fair, I've listened to it a lot this week, as am meant to be singing it as a duet at the weekend

The Trashmen - Surfin' Bird

Though it's The Ramones version that seems to be more prevalent today.

Anyone who's seen a recent Family Guy episode will know why...

"Brian, NO!"

Treat yourself

You really should get the parent album, Get Happy!! It's the best. It has more earworms than a graveyard (sorry)

A Camp

Love Has Left The Room. When you read, as you undoubtedly will at some point this year, that new band X (probably skinny, probably from New York, probably all with trustfunds) make 'perfect pop', compare with this Swedish masterpiece. Single of the year and it's only April.

I have an iPod in my mind ...

http://www.theonion.com/content/node/33642

"All I have to do is hear a song once or twice, and it's stored forever. I can call it up any time I want. Beach Boys. Beatles. How about some Bach? Or some Billy Joel? Sing me a song, piano man of my mind! And those are just the artists whose names begin with "B."

I can browse by artist, album, song, or music genre. Boom! I'm doing it right now! The "repeat" feature? Heck, songs from my iPod don't ever have to end. I swear, I had "Music Box Dancer" going through my head for three days straight last week.

You say those iPods have customizable playlists that allow you to line up songs of your choosing? Primitive! I can put together a playlist, say "Best-Ever Heavy Metal Anthems," while I'm sitting in traffic. My mind is light-years beyond that, though. Does your iPod have the "That Reminds Me Of Another Great Song" feature? Well, my mind does!

Does your iPod have a powerful feature that can play back the great songs of summer 1993, as they sounded coming out of Mike Tollefson's boombox in the back of the school bus? Of course not ..."

Actually I woke up this morning with a strong urge to hear "Box of Rain" and found it courtesy of the Dead list some kind Massive-ite has started on Spotify-has been going round my head ever since-was almost as quick as getting CD out and putting in the stereo ...

Withnail & I

today I woke up with the live version of A Whiter Shade Of Pale that opens Withnail & I in my brain (you know, that vaguely lame sax solo)

have no idea why

0

I was hoping it could be this, but a quick wiki and spotty demonstrated King Curtis in a surprisingly naff gouda version http://open.spotify.com/album/2ifJviuyTDYRNnH2JGRlF0

Right Now: You're the One...

...by Paul Simon. Quite a relief - I watched the DVD of Mamma Mia last weekend with my daughter, so I had bleedin' Abba songs buzzing around in my head all week.
