What the photographer says to the artist when they're over forty.

David Hepworth's picture

"Tell you what. You've got a beautiful spinal column. Turn around and we'll try a few that way."

If only they'd applied that rule to

Millie Jackson

That's...

disturbing.

0
Adman | 2 March 2010 - 8:38pm

I think...

... it would have been even more disturbing if she'd been sat the wrong way round.

Formbyman | 15 March 2010 - 3:52pm

Worked wonders...

for Mick Jagger - Goddess In the Doorway sold about 3 copies didn't it?

0
Clerk Kent | 2 March 2010 - 3:01pm

"You, McCartney, turn around, the other three, as you were..."

Well, it was either that or a ribald reference to Sade being taken from behind.

Actually, in the magazine publishing world, doesn't Mark Ellen just draw the cover on a napkin and get some Spanish guy to colour it in?

skirky | 2 March 2010 - 3:21pm

Say what you will...

... but I think she's smokin' hot. Even smokinger considering she's 51!!

0
Billybob Dylan | 2 March 2010 - 3:30pm

And...

She doesn't look too shabby from the front, if you ask me.

I'll be there in a jiffy...

Blimey, think how much you'd get from Cash My Gold for that lot...

0
skirky | 2 March 2010 - 3:50pm

Nothing

looks like silver to me. then again.i'm no expert

0
Sour Crout | 2 March 2010 - 9:40pm

Just to clarify Billybob...

Are you talking about Ms Adu or Ms Jackson?

0
stimpy | 3 March 2010 - 11:56am

So wrong Lord Hep.

She looks better than ever.

1
D.Green | 2 March 2010 - 3:58pm

It has been

photoshopped to death hasn't it?

0
BigJimBob | 2 March 2010 - 4:03pm

Bad Example

I know what you're getting at, but picking Ms. Adu as an example is way off the mark.

torrential1 | 2 March 2010 - 4:06pm

I'd say that's the result of having plenty of money

and not working too hard

After an initial burst in the 80's she releases an album every 8-10 years

0
latenitetellyvision | 2 March 2010 - 4:18pm

That back's famous

If anyone had asked me to say what bits of Live Aid I could recall 25 years on, Sade's backless dress would have been right at the top.

This one?

I posted this vid on another Sade thread. Those of you who are of strong constitution and fancy a Lad Test, zap it to the end for the final sung notes. If you can listen to them without wincing and swearing, you're a proper double-hard bastard.

I failed. And the milk's gone off again.

around 5:40

I am not a fan of her jazzy noodlings either. I love jazz, but I can't abide jazzy.

Around 5:40 is when she 'expresses her individuality"

0
el hombre malo | 2 March 2010 - 9:15pm

Her guitarist...

still owes me a tenner.

0
Dr.Pill | 3 March 2010 - 2:11am

I'm going to be charitable and say that she deliberately

did that for (errrm) 'musical reasons'. Yeah, that's it... deliberately subverting the purity of the rest of the vocal by dropping in those last discordant notes.

and that.

0
stimpy | 3 March 2010 - 12:05pm

Maybe.

"expressing her individuality"

0
el hombre malo | 3 March 2010 - 12:15pm

Hm. Yes.

Good try, Stimpy. I'd have said the last bit was done deliberately to make us forget the rest of the vocal performance being flatter than a witch's tit.

0
Lenny Law | 3 March 2010 - 12:55pm

Ver Witch

They're cold and flat...........sh*t!

0
torrential1 | 3 March 2010 - 11:31pm

I still fail to see

the attraction of her coupon or sub jazz lounge noodlings

1
James Blast | 2 March 2010 - 4:58pm

I am shocked

At such catty remarks, especially from the responsible head of the parish.

She looks great and seems like a nice lady (and even if I'm not especially keen on her 'sub jazz lounge noodlings'* a lot of people are and fair play to them)

I will bow to

better judgement than mine (Mr Crowther) but I would suggest that the original photographer had very little to do with the final image.

0
Dave Amitri | 2 March 2010 - 5:51pm

oh now

i bet they had to go miles to find an Aztec temple with scaffolding in the foreground...

0
Glenbervie | 2 March 2010 - 8:32pm

Ha ha

I meant the Sade image not the whole picture.....

0
Dave Amitri | 2 March 2010 - 8:40pm

it would seem she would be setting her self

for a fall if you isn't same shape as the photo with cruel world of ok etc. I suspect there's been very littler photoshop slimming even if the picture has been processed in other way manipulating a shot isn't inherently bad.

0
Chris G | 2 March 2010 - 9:55pm

But what does it mean?

Why is she looking at an Aztec temple at sunset? Why does a lone pterodactyl fly above? Is *she* a Soldier of Love? Is she resting against the bar that she has raised with this new album? Or is it just random mystical imagery thrown together in a "that'll-do" type way?

0
Austin | 3 March 2010 - 3:56am

The raised bar

There's a Britney Spears video (don't ask me how I know this) which makes deft use of the same device for its lengthening or perhaps more accurately 'liftening' qualities.

0
Captain Underpants | 3 March 2010 - 7:37am

Sade is beautiful,...

..but the cover is awful. It so dated - a rejected '80s Roxy Music image.

0
AdamRob | 3 March 2010 - 12:06pm

Thought I'd mention

I listened to Stronger Than Pride this morning. It sounded lovely, particularly the song Love Is Stronger Than Pride, which is beautiful.
