What (other) podcasts are worth listening to?

Madrid's picture

(if The Word don’t mind…)

Only recently started listening to the Word podcast which I think is wonderful, even better than the magazine, so much so that I’ve listened to 40 odd in the last month (my excuse is it's pretty much all the English I get to hear...). Still 30 to go before I’ll be reduced to waiting a week for it to come out, but I want to be prepared so I can fill that gap when it arrives.

So what else is worth listening to? Books, music, film, popular culture, a bit of current affairs are what I’m after (not necessarily at the same time). A touch of humour would do nicely too (but please, no Russell B****).

My podcast list:

Danny Baker on 606
Adam & Joe
Collings and Herrin
Harry Shearer's Le Show
The Robin Ince ones (if they are still out there)
The Archers (THANK YOU BBC)

Amongst others. The Simon Mayo podcasts might be up your street as well, and I've heard good things about the new Phill Jupitus one, although haven't got round to listening to it yet.

After taking a gander at my iTunes list

I'll third Adam and Joe - worth it for 'Song Wars' alone.

Other than that, I regularly listen to -
Collings and Herrin
Answer Me This
The Bugle
Stephen Fry

As past podcasts go, the Robin Ince Utter Shambles series was particularly good. So too is the old Times Comedy one with Jason Byrne (I forgot its proper name) - good half hour chats between comedians that bring a few smiles to your face. I believe both are available via iTunes if you look for them.

Plenty of football I see

Any cricket? That's the sport for me.

Plus...

Speechification, which is a weekly collection of various radio broadcasts - there's usually a nugget or 2 each week to download.

For the funny stuff, go to Andrew Collins and Richard Herring's weekly podcast.

If anyone likes Kevin Smith's movies

I would recommend the SModcast where he says what ever comes into his head to his producer Scott Mosier. If you don't enjoy Kevin Smith's films you will hate this.
I hated science at school so am rather startled to discover a love for Dr Karl, an Australian gentleman who has a go at answering any query you might have. Great for provoking "Well I didn't know that" comments to your iPod.

Not heard of this but I'll give it a go thanks, I do enjoy his films.

Just found the archive here:

The select few

There aren't many that I subscribe to, but they are:

Word
Word Backstage
Baker & Kelly (Not updating, obviously - Listen to them on occasions to remind me of how good they are/were)
Fighting Talk
Friday Night Comedy From BBC Radio 4
In Our Time With Melvyn Bragg
Mark Kermode & Simon Mayo's Film Review
Stephen Fry's Podgrams

In addition to (many of) the above

I like The Sound of Young America - "A Public Radio Show About Things That Are Awesome". There is another podcast from the same stable, called "Jordan, Jesse, Go!" which is seems to be no more than a couple of American guys chatting. It has an effortless charm and often features guests - Nick Hornby was on recently, others include the likes of David Sedaris.

It would be a "love it or loathe it" thing, I think.

Any new ones?

Having been a late starter to The Word Podcast (finally worked my way through all 130-odd to get up to date), I found this thread which I thought I'd resurrect. Quite a few of the ones listed are no longer current so I thought I'd ask the Massive for an update on their favourites...

One I'd recommend is the Bill Simmons "BS Report" from ESPN. Obviously US sport based, but great guests and great banter, which I guess is what I'm after.

Mentioned a couple the other day

on a different thread, but might as well add them here as well.

Baddiel & Skinner are doing World Cup podcasts again, and if they're as good as the ones they did in 2006, they're worth a listen.

Americana from the BBC, a Letter From America type of thing, always throws up one or two interesting segments in the half hour.

Too damn many...

Apart from the Word, Mayo & Kermode, In Out Time and Guardian Football Weekly (among others) can I add:

A History of the World in 100 Objects (mentioned in the last Word Podcast)
BBC World Service's Documentary Archive - usually 2 or 3 a week, last about 25 minutes, covers an astonishing range of topics.
Desert Island Discs
Onion Radio News
This American Life
