What Music Have You Mostly Recently Bought?

LOUDspeaker's picture

I was going through the "First Record You Bought" article and saw that someone had also listed the last CD they had bought. So that got me thinking.

I have the following on order:

Siouxsie and the Banshees - Ju Ju (Digitally Remastered)
Siouxsie and the Banshees - The Rapture
Siouxsie and the Banshees - The Scream (Remastered)
Leonard Cohen - Various Positions

All are £3 each on Play.com. Still haven't arrived.

As I've never bought a single I have nothing to report on that front.

They're not here yet....

....as I only ordered them on Friday.

John Hiatt - Same Old Man(released today I think)
Evan Dando - Baby I'm Bored
Kathleen Edwards - Failer

Portal

Is 'Still Alive' from Portal on the Orange Box soundtrack thingy? Such a sweetly hilarious tune...

Good shout on the Shortwave Set, by the way - a very agreeable album.

I'm making a note here "huge success"

Yes, "Still Alive" is on there - in two versions, no less (one as it appears in the game and one as sung by the composer).

I think between "Replica Sun Machine" and Goldfrapp "Seventh Tree" I have my summer listening sorted.

Oh and, because I haven't said it here yet, I bought Paris Motel's EP and then album after hearing her on a Now Hear This CD and it's really rather good.

Amazon and Sainsbury's

Amazon - got bargain oldies:

Nick Drake - Bryter Later. I am inclined to agree with those who say this is a classic.
Neil Young - Zuma. Feel this must be one from his best period. Been meaning to get this for ages.
Tangerine Dream - Rubycon. Used to imagine they were boring but heard a bit on a Mojo CD and was seduced. Seems endlessly playable.

Sainsbury's for chart newies:

Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree. I love this. It is perfect balance of modern and retro. Dreamy is the word.
Elbow - Seldom Seen Kid. It's good but, dare I say it, I find it a bit samey and dull, although Grounds For Divorce is impressive.
Guillemots - Red. Initially enthusiatic about this but now having my doubts. Slightly irritatingly overdone but some good tunes.
Supergrass - Diamond Hoo Ha. Worth getting I would say. Maybe four really good songs - the more subtle ones. Ghost Of A Friend probably best one, as heard on 'Now Hear This' CD.

Elbow

Agree about the sameness. they have produced random outstanding tracks :Scattered Black and Whites" "Station Approach" "Starlings" are my favoutites but I don't listen to their whole albums they are, as you say, rather dull.

Here goes...

...mainly second hand/bargains as usual. From Amazon I got The Walker Brothers' 'If You Could Hear Me Now' (mainly for the 'Nite Flights' stuff which is amazing, but annoyingly I recently got hold of that '5 Easy Pieces' box in a second hand store which had all of those songs on it), Traffic's 'Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory' and Weather Report's 'Tale Spinnin'.

Visit to a second hand store today and did a trade for a 2-disc Chris Farlowe best of, a triple disc Kaleidoscope album, Van Morrison's 'Days Like This' and The Rolling Stones' 'Out Of Our Heads'. Found Captain Beefheart's 'Ice Cream For Crow' for £1.49 yesterday too!

Earlier in the week I got Genesis' new DVD 'When In Rome' which I'd been waiting for months for (was initially due in February!). Being a Genesis die-hard I want to get hold of the first few Brand X albums and Tony Banks' 'Strictly Inc.' on Amazon at some point too.

Found that new Eagles album for a fiver recently but sold it off again- David Hepworth was right, it's dreadful. The ballads on it were just excruciatingly bad.

Next Monday I have new albums by Uriah Heep and Opeth, then (thankfully!) it all goes quiet for some time on the new release front.

Interestingly that Guillemots new album was £4 in Zavvi last week, but they've changed their mind and it's back up to £8 again!

Recently purchased music

Sparks - Exotic creatures of the Deep
Jesus & Mary Chain - Psychocandy to replace vinyl copy
Smiths early CDs - ditto (all cheap in Fopp)

With the latter a bit weird listening to the whole albums again after quite a long break. JAMC in the car first thing in the morning was more of a challenge than expected, but maybe because I'm used to hearing the singles in bursts rather than a sustained assault ! Smiths, I felt a bit disappointed. Somehow other than tracks like Reel around the fountain and There is a light they just didn't have the same impact as when I was 20 !

Otherwise I have recently been amusing myself listening to the Rich Kids album - so much of its time it's weird but still strangely enjoyable.

Bargains

The Very Best Of Cat Stevens
The Good Son - Nick Cave
Murder Ballads - Nick Cave
Watch the Ride - Andrew Weatherall mix

Amazon is great for completing the Nick Cave collection as most of the CDs are under a fiver. Same goes for the Eels.

I also picked up a Rush compilation called Retrospective 1974-1980 in the supermarket whilst doing some food shopping.

Rush

Annoyingly the second Retrospective CD has been deleted for some reason. The only way to get it at the moment is to buy the Retrospective 2CD and 1 DVD box set.

New Tunes

My most recent purchases were some second-hand albums from the rather nifty, and heartily recommended, www.musicmagpie.co.uk :

Basement Jaxx - Kish Kash (to complete my Jaxx collection)
Faith No More - The Real Thing (to replace a battered old copy)
The Fall - The Infotainment Scan
Karma To Burn - Karma To Burn
Strapping Young Lad - City
plus a collection of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci singles, and samplers from the Relapse and Alternative Tentacles lables. I largely wanted to rock, I have to admit.

Otherwise, I've had the new Fleet Foxes album from the excellent Rough Trade Album Club subscription service. It's like buying yourself a present each month, with the added pleasure of not knowing what new delights will arrive through your box. Marvellous.
