What IS that tune behind "The Bubble" trailer?

Paul Vincent's picture

Yet again I'm being tormented by an inability to identify the background music in a TV trailer. This time it's the trailer for David Mitchell's "The Bubble" series. It's a rather funky bass/organ/drums riff, with lead guitar interjections, that sounds maddeningly similar to mid-70s Gentle Giant, but though I'm (very) familar with the majority of the late GG's output, I just can't place the music. So does anyone know: is this in fact Gentle Giant, and if so, which track from which album? And if it's not GG, then who is it? They sound (or at least this snippet sounds) so similar to Gentle Giant that I'd be interested in hearing more!

Whilst on the subject, does anyone know of any websites which answer the general question "What was that song used in that TV show?". With the ever-rising use of pre-existing music in TV shows, rather than commissioning new incidental music, I find myself increasingly often hearing a terrific song in the background, and wanting to get hold of a copy, but lacking any information about artist, title etc. If such a website exists, I need to bookmark it. If no such site exists, maybe it's time one did - which may be a whole new project...

I think...

You'll find it's the Keef Hartley Band, the track Poor Mabel, off the Battle of NW6. It's not on Spotify though....

Once again

the all-knowing oracle that is The Word Massive rises nobly to the challenge. Thanks, Jayhawk - it's a long time since I've heard (or read) someone say "the Keef Hartley band"!

It's a revival

for Keef I think – he's got an autobiography out as well! The Beeb used this track last year for some trailers and I spotted it then - it's an album I've always been fond of. They must have some old hippies in their ads dept, they seem to like that track anyway.

Mr. Scruff Spandex Man

It's Mr. Scruff's Spandex Man which uses the guitar riff from Poor Mabel by The Keef Hartley Band.
Check it out on YouTube:

But

Very much not Gentle giant if you listen to the rest of the track! Great album though if you like blues rock

Slightly connected but

bear with me. Whenever Sky play their advert for Sky+ HD Supertelly with the "Come with me and you'll be in a world of my imagination" song from Charlie and The Chocolate Factory I can't help thinking that it's not Gene Wilder but David Mitchell singing it. Am I alone, again?

that ad

is VERY like the current Coke campaign in its theme. Is it the same agency? If so it's money for old rope...

If it's any help...

The iTunes store has a section devoted to music that's current being used in TV ads. (Go to the music store and it's near the bottom on the right under "More in music")

it is with some disappointment

that I heard Tilly and the Wall's Pot Kettle Black being played on a Jaguar ad. Still reckon it was a great single though.

the bubble

This has been driving me mad. We were in a Berlin museum recently and the music wss being played to accompany a film of a surreal game of East Berlin musical chairs-in a squat circa 1960- on a loop- quite mesmerising.

Now I fell asleep in front of the telly last night

But I'm sure I saw a long Visa ad with Isla de Encanta by the Pixies. A football ad no less. Was I dreaming?
