What, if you are one, are you expecting for Fathers Day?

Beezer's picture

I'm one and it'll be my 3rd Fathers Day as a recipient.

This year I know I'm getting a copy of Antony Beevor's 'D Day'. I know because I ordered it and had it delivered. All Mrs B has to do is keep it out of sight till Sunday when I shall go through the delightful charade of acting surprised for the benefit of little squidgy daughter B when she hands it to me - along with something gluey but treasurable made at nursery school.

Any similar events planned? If so, what have you already bought for yourself to be handed over in the same way? Or will you be trusting to luck?

Seeing as how I just paid....

for my car insurance, and paid for my double bass to be repaired I'll be lucky to get a card!! I think renewing my Word subscription is my present, and also my Christmas present!!

Classic Dad-ness - A BBQ!

A BBQ - small, ideal for taking on holiday, and lets me release my inner Fred Flintstone. Selected by Senora Malo, I only know about it because the website was playing up and I had to give a little technical assistance.

If anyone else is ordering one, note free postage if you get the order over £45 by ordering charcoal, etc.

I shall be getting phonecall soon

from daughters in 20's, enquiring about my preferences. I shall probably follow above guidelines and purchase items I prefer to give to wife to give to...you get the picture. Better than them wasting money on something I do not need.

A bottle of single malt would be nice.

To qualify

a little, seeing as my original post makes me look a bit like a miserable selfish curmudgeon who doesn't trust his family to please him!

Not at all, like Beany above, Mrs B would prefer I was given something I wanted rather than monogrammed hankies etc. It's just easier if I actually get it so it's got!

Hopefully

a bit of a lay in, some time having a cuddle with the baby twins and then some boy stuff with my 10 year old son ( a canoe trip down the canal would be good).

Sunny weather and a BBQ would seal it for me.

A tale about my dear old dad

Long since departed this mortal coil.

My dad made Del Boy look like an amateur. He was always picking up something cheap from a mate of his down the pub. Not stolen...it was a respectable pub(!)

I'm at college in Leeds, making weekly phonecall home. He enquires, "I've got a briefcase here. Would you like it? Going cheap."

Me, thinking of my trips to record companies in London, "Only if it's big enough to fit LPs inside"

Dad sends mum off to find an LP in house to test. Shouting in background from mum, "You're not supposed to bend the bloody things!". Briefcase clearly not big enough. The thought was there I suppose.

Bah Humbug

Don't do Fathers' Day. It's just a tacky commercial invention. When the kids used to bring me stuff home from nursery / school / brownies / whatever I accepted it gratefully, of course. These days they seem as happy as I am not to bother!

A phone call is all I am expecting

Been a dad for over twenty five years and over this time seen a rise in teh commercialism of father's day. Hardly anyone used to bother whereas Mother's Day was always a big thing. Call me an old fart but I prefer it that way. So a phone call from each son will be fine as far as I am concerned. A new I POD???

Only cos I broke

my old one last month - probably using F-Day as an excuse for buying something we can't really afford.

Get yourself an Amazon wishlist!!

Whenever I see or read about anything I fancy, I add it to my Amazon wishlist. Some things have been on the list for a long time and may never be bought but no matter, it's just there to remind me. When it comes to Father's Day, Christmas or my birthday, I always point my wife and kids to it.

With a bit of luck I'll get the new Elvis Costello and Teddy Thompson but anything from the list will be fine.

I always shared the view that is was a load of commercial

nonsense, having been told so by the previous wife. Since Mrs Path has been in my life, it has actually been a joy, as the kids are brought together to make me feel really rather a proud Dad. A slap up meal makes the day. I usually pay for it, but one day, one day.......

Retropath2 | 16 June 2009 - 8:22am

If truth be told

a kiss and a cuddle from the shortest member of the family would do me rightly.

And I agree it's nothing much more than a commercial opportunity but if Mrs B and the little one want to make sure I get a present then far be it from me to deny them that pleasure!

From my daughter (aged 10)

a cup of tea in bed and hopefully she will make one of her pancakes which are really rather good.
My son aged 19 is going to Cuba with his girlfriend on Sunday so as he wont be around we have agreed to go and see looking for Eric on thursday night. Like Retro I will end up paying even though he has a job but I love the quality time we spend together so don't mind at all.

I Like Father's Day

I'm hoping to play golf (it's the monthly stableford) in the morning, whilst the GLW and girls will probably play World Of Warcraft. As for presents, I've seen a suspicious parcel, but have no idea what's in it.

I must remember to get a card for my Dad.
