What do you use Twitter for?

Ruth from Stroud's picture

I've got into a dreadful muddle with Twitter over the last couple of days.

We have a twitter account for our business and I also follow personal interests on there. So over the last few days I've been adding people that I've come across on the Word blogs.

But I've now stumbled on a problem that I hadn't really considered before - if any of you follow me back will you get irritated by the tweets I do concerning our business. I've already had one Word blogger block me which shocked me and then got me thinking on the lines above.

So I've decided to resurrect another account that I wasn't using and just use it for personal interests and keep the business one for business. Is anyone else here in a similar position?

The other problem I now face is do I unfollow all the non-business tweeters on our business twitter. It just seems so rude! So if anyone wants to unfollow me I promise not to be mortally offended and cry into my beer - promise. (And it might make it easier for me to do some unfollowing as well).

What would be the appropriate song to link to here, I wonder?

Hi Ruth from Stroud

I use Twitter purely for personal matters (@MrRenoDakota) - mixing business with pleasure never works out in the end.

As for songs for your quandary...

I'm still undecided

Been toying with twitter for a few weeks. Aside from following a few comic, sports and news feeds I've probably only connected with folk from this blog.

If I'm totally honest, I'm finding in it counter productive to my enjoyment of the word blog.

Don't know why, probably something to do with quality of information and feeling obligated to post something. I found myself tweeting yesterday that I was on the half way line at the Daggers V Wimbledon match. Who the hell cares?

On the blog, at least I'm driven to think reasonably carefully before posting something. On twitter there is no such mechanism for control.

I quite like Danny B's stance of using it as an outlet for his material. It makes him fun to follow knowing that it is a creative outlet.

I think, I've just resigned from the twitter club!

Martin Simmonds | 14 August 2011 - 2:11pm

I've followed you back in both instances, Ruth.

With the benefit of hindsight, it might have been wise to send tweets telling people who you were.

This has certainly got me wondering just who may have been behind some of the weird and wonderful followers I've had...

0
Paolo Meccano | 14 August 2011 - 2:15pm

Yes I just leapt straight in

without thinking and didn't think of the ramifications til it became complicated to explain! I did post a couple of tweets before I started to follow people on my new account, but as usual difficult to explain it without getting really long winded. Well, I know who I am, but how do I tell other people. This exercise has actually made me stop and think well who am I in 160 characters or less!

Ruth from Stroud | 14 August 2011 - 2:53pm

I think I blocked a request from a bookshop...

nothing personal of course, but as mentioned above without any way to link it to someone I know or a Word pseudoynm etc, then sorry but it's going to get blocked. There's been a lot of Word people's accounts hacked recently and that's led to a lot of spam.

Anyway, now I know the score I have "followed" you...!

1
Retro Man | 14 August 2011 - 8:33pm

That's ok

Actually it was probably rather a good thing as it made me stop and think what I was doing!

1
Ruth from Stroud | 15 August 2011 - 11:24am

Two feeds

Just see the feeds as different streams of information. The fact that they all come from you doesn't matter. Having two for different sorts of info makes perfect sense. There'll be a transitional phase when you realign them, but don't worry about it. prioritise the work on as that makes you money!

0
Twangothan | 14 August 2011 - 2:34pm

I'm already happier

having the two separate. I think my business self can be a bit too serious sometimes and I'm in the mood to lighten up.

0
Ruth from Stroud | 14 August 2011 - 2:55pm

My twitter is completely personal.

I am too foul mouthed over there to even contemplate using it for business purposes. However were I to use twitter for business, I'd keep it well separate. Seems sensible to me.

ganglesprocket | 14 August 2011 - 2:39pm

White noise

Personally I dislike the way Twitter has developed. It may be useful for sending short, sharp alerts to people who need to know what you're doing, but 99% seems to be irritating babble from people who think it's all about how quantity rather than quality.

I can appreciate a considered, well written blog. I can't appreciate a stream of top of the head remarks jostling with brainless updates and sales pitches.

Then again, I am a grumpy old git.

1
Rotherhithe Hack | 14 August 2011 - 2:42pm

That doesn't make you a grumpy old git

Just sensible.

I have yet to find a reason for Twitter's continued existence.

2
badger_king | 14 August 2011 - 2:56pm

because it's fun

/just a thought

Waking up in the morning to #wokeupthismorning

as tweeted by Drakeygirl and other folks of this parish makes Twitter worth the effort all on it's own. I guess it's a matter of different pricks for different kicks.

2
Pencilsqueezer | 14 August 2011 - 3:58pm

I don't.

Waste of time. An occasional use of Facebook and this Blog brings me enough attention, ta very much.

2
itfc1959 | 14 August 2011 - 4:25pm

Not really about attention seeking,

just an amusing and quick way to stay in touch with people.

5
Pencilsqueezer | 14 August 2011 - 5:04pm

In all honesty

I think the whole point of Twitter is its eclectic nature: a whole bunch of people talking bollocks about a whole bunch of stuff. Personally, if someone only ever talks about one thing then I tend to get rather bored. A classic example is someone like Jon Favreau: someone who's probably quite witty, but unfortunately only uses Twitter for two things: 1. Publicising his latest film, and 2. Retweeting what other people are saying about his latest film. Even if I wanted to see his latest film, that would be enough for me to discreetly unfollow. Sorry.

2
Lucas Hare | 14 August 2011 - 4:34pm

For

clique activites obviously. Like anything you need to put some effort in. Just crossing your arms and saying "impress me" is pointless.

Use it or not - it matters nowt

4
DogFacedBoy | 14 August 2011 - 4:55pm

Twitter

I've tried it, but it isn't for me. Too much info makes my mind race, and I could see it becoming addictive. As DFB says though, use it if you want to and don't if you don't. Horses for courses.

Former Twitter naysayer...

Now enjoying the experience.

@Adman2011

If you like, get in touch if you are a Massive member & I haven't tracked you down to follow you yet. Only been on a couple of days. Larks, so far.

0
Adman | 14 August 2011 - 7:40pm

Yes followed you

You have turned around! I remembered our exchange before...

0
Twangothan | 14 August 2011 - 8:38pm

I went away and thought about it...

And there is a lot more control over the whole thing than I grasped the first time.
Thanks for following ... I hope I followed you back ... Please let me know if I didn't, I won't be offended!

0
Adman | 14 August 2011 - 8:46pm

You did

we are joined at the Twitter hip.

0
Twangothan | 14 August 2011 - 11:15pm

Can anybody here give me a few hints

on using Twitter on a smartphone? I've had the idea of being logged onto our business twitter on my laptop, and personal twitter on my phone. Would that work do you think, or do you have to go to a computer sometimes for some of the functions?

BTW the separate personal account is so much better. So thanks to all for your patience and understanding.

As you can see I'm fairly new to a lot of this new technology/social networking malarkey, but trying to catch up fast and not make too many gaffes on the way!

0
Ruth from Stroud | 15 August 2011 - 11:22am

I use twitter mainly on my smartphone

and I use an app called Seesmic on my android phone (also available for iphone) which is utterly excellent. very easy to switch between accounts on it if you wanted to update both from your phone.

give it a try and give me a shout if I can tell you more about how to use it. it's free too!

0
Hannah | 16 August 2011 - 4:20am

Sounds good

I'll have a look at that one. Thank-you.

0
Ruth from Stroud | 16 August 2011 - 6:30am

I use Tweetdeck

because I have a personal account (@ceepeeee) and a work account I look after. Tweetdeck on my Android phone gives me a separate screen for each account and I swipe across from one to the other. What I really like though is that it remembers the last tweet I looked at rather than loading them from the top like Twitter does.

0
ceepee | 16 August 2011 - 4:20pm

Has anyone

noticed an upturn in spam tweets as DMs urging you to check out a picture?

0
jimmyshoes01 | 15 August 2011 - 11:45am

oh yes

getting about four of those a day at the mo.

0
Hannah | 16 August 2011 - 4:10am

I Use It Mainly

to post spotify playlists not sure how successful this is though since if you follow many people you can easily miss tweets

0
MrRadio | 15 August 2011 - 11:51am

Twit

I really like Twitter as it doesn't require much time and is so 'on-the-pulse' for things like sporting and news events.

I'm @native12 and stuck on 99 followers if anyone wants to help me reach a century! Will return the favour...

0
Native | 15 August 2011 - 12:45pm

I use it to curate information

I follow Twitter links from various sections of the Guardian and it points me to articles I usually enjoy reading online so I don't need to buy the paper itself. I also get links sent to me by friends to other articles in such as the New York Times or Economist. There are also a few celebs I like to follow to get their take on things - and of course there's the daddy of them all @prodnose. Some celebs over-tweet so eventually I get tired of them and unfollow. I've got a few mates I also follow but when they start tweeting about what they're having for lunch, they soon get unfollowed. You have to be brutal.

Recent events

have shown the absolute worst of Twitter. Last week it became a constant barrage of tweeted and retweeted hysterical misinformation which at worst was downright dangerous and counter productive to Police operations, and at best was causing unnecessary panic and just added to the confusion and misery.

I've tried with Twitter twice now and I think that's put me off for good. I'll use it for my own mercenary promotional purposes and getting a message to someone I can't contact any other way, or finding out running times for gigs but I think I can live without an online rumour mill constantly churning away in my pocket.

I don't really care about being the first to know about the next tragic event. I don't give a flying fuck if I don't get "Breaking News" before 'The News' gets it. I'd rather get it second hand when someone else has had time to get the facts straight, and give it me in more than 140 characters.

1
Dr Volume | 16 August 2011 - 3:43am

but....

surely a lot of that is down to who you're following? maybe time to do a cull?

2
Hannah | 16 August 2011 - 4:09am

Last week also showed the best of Twitter

as it organised people to help clean up the mess after the riots. The #cleanup hashtag led to a website that gave info on where help was needed. They had to upgrade servers when the demand carashed the system. It also helped spread good news stories, phots and the like.

You can also follow your local police to discover what is really going on at times like the riots.

0
DogFacedBoy | 16 August 2011 - 9:10am

I follow Prodnose. That's it.

0
stimpy | 16 August 2011 - 9:21am

I have to ignore Danny

at the weekend now cos its all football chat which is of no interest to me but that's fine. You don't have to read it all, just pick n choose.
Not every fleeting thought is a pearl

Horses for courses

That makes me want to join Twitter! Danny Baker is a great football broadcaster. He understands what the game is really about and brings a welcome touch of humour.

0
Spartacus Mills | 16 August 2011 - 12:48pm

Heh, I don't post anything and I don't follow anyone else

so, for me, Twitter is simply a direct feed from DB to me :-)

0
stimpy | 16 August 2011 - 12:54pm

I just edited my original post

to take out the old twitter name as I've swapped everyone I was following on there over to the new one now.

Thanks for all your hints and tips - all really useful. The separate personal twitter account is working very well.

There are just a couple of people who haven't unfollowed me on my business twitter so I'm going to bite the bullet and unfollow them now - better I think to be completely separate. So apologies if I'm just about to offend anyone!
