What do you play at 11 when everyone's out?

The missus has gone out for an hour or two, it's early evening, and I've had a sh*t day at work.

Right.

As I type I'm grinning like an idiot, drumming on the desk and struggling to type and spell things properly 'cause "Caravanserai" is belting out at mega-watt levels and I know every bloody note, every word, every shout, and every drum beat and it's just effing GLORIOUS to hear it properly once in a while.

What do you reach for to play from start to finish at structural engineering threatening volumes when the opportunity presents itself?

When I'm cooking dinner it's

When I'm cooking dinner it's normally old soul and reggae, with the bass cranked up - especially on a Sunday afternoon.

Right now I've got my iTunes 80s folder on full blast: Tears For Fears right now, just now was The Bluebells. My wife and I listen to a lot of music, and we're into a lot of the same stuff. But here's the thing: I was 12 in 1981 and she was...born. So my taste for cheesy synth pop doesn't always get a look in...

F-f-f-f-f-f-f-f-funk

Chic (as I type), Lefties Soul Connection, The Commodores, The Highlighters, Betty Davis, The Meters, The New Mastersounds and Orlando Julius.

Ragged Glory

There's nothing like bellowing "Fuckin' Up" at the top of your lungs while peeling the potatoes. And there's always the cast soundtrack to 'The Hot Shoe Shuffle' when one wants to indulge one's showtune-centric side without affecting that oh-so critical Wordmongerer cool or listening to Elaine Paige. "Rock n' Roll Doctor" is also good for a bit of Dad-dancing while the trouble & strife is away.

Bob Dylan Live 1966

No one in the family seems to like it quite as much as I do, and certainly no one wants to hear it as loud as I do. As the man said, "Play it fuckin' loud..."

Lucas Hare | 30 April 2008 - 9:49pm

Great shout...

That album really does sound better the louder it's played! Genius.

Patrick Crowther | 1 May 2008 - 6:32am

got to hear the bass

Steel Pulse - Handsworth Revolution. Know the album inside out, great from start to finish.

Indus | 30 April 2008 - 10:35pm

Uprising

...by Bob Marley - everything you need for a spirit lifting high volume experience. Why does loud through speakers sound so good but loud through headphones just hurts?

Twangothan | 1 May 2008 - 10:01am

Sorry to mention RT again

But he gets played when the wife is out because she cant stand him. Also Elvis Costello - she likes North,King of America AND the colloborations with Burt Bacharach and Allen Touissant but not the noisy earlier stuff.
She doesnt like any jazz unless its got voices in it like Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald etc so that gets played too.
She would basically say anything without a tune, I would say anything that requires an effort.

Vulpes, forgive me for asking but if your wife has gone out for a couple of hours at 11 is there something she's not telling you??

Steve Turner | 1 May 2008 - 12:18pm

11

is the setting on the amplifier. :)

Crank It Up

The Hold Steady's 'Boys and Girls In America' for definite. Big fat chunky guitars and shouty singing. Very cathartic.

Also The Waterboys 'This is the Sea' demands a significant turn of the volume switch, as does the much-overlooked Hurrah's 'Tell God I'm Here'.

And then there's Echo and the Bunnymen's 'Heaven Up Here' (particularly Over The Wall). OK, that might not leave you in the most optimistic of moods, but it still feels great.

RamblinMan | 1 May 2008 - 12:48pm

Hurrah!!!

Ah Sweet Sanity played at volume is a dream! I love that record!

SimonL | 1 May 2008 - 3:34pm

Not just me then...

They should have been massive.

Whatever happened to, etc etc.

Hounds of Love

The one I always come back too as my indulgence when no one around is Kate Bush - Hounds of Love. Sounds fabulous anyway, but even better loud (wasn't it her previous album, The Dreaming, that has the credit "this album should be played loud" ?)

chrisf | 1 May 2008 - 3:25pm

Sonic Youth

"Youth Against Fascism".....crunchy, crunchy guitars
