What do those ups mean to you?

JohnW's picture

As far as I'm concerned, bestowing an "up" to a post means one of the following:
1. That made me laugh/smile.
2. I agree with that.
3. I enjoyed reading that.
4. Good point, well made.
5. Thank you for sharing that.
Firstly, are there any more "definitions" and secondly, which type do you prefer to get? Having posted a fairly obscure 3 word "witty" response yesterday afternoon I was delighted to get 3 ups which, to me, meant that I made (at least) 3 people smile, which is a very nice feeling, especially when It may have blown past everyone like tumbleweed. I think they're my favourite type.

Another 'definition' that I've been guilty of:

6. I really disgaree with/dislike the poster you're arguing/disagreeing with and will give you an up in a rather cowardly and pointless attempt to express this.

I'm with you on 1 as my favourite. My posts tend mainly to be attempts at getting a laugh and when they're upped it genuinely makes my day.

I'm guilty

of not paying attention to the Up arrow. I often forget to Up something that deserves it. More often than not, to be honest. OTOH I don't usually notice whether anything I say here has been Upped or not.

Apologies to those I should have Upped but didn't, and apologies in advance to those I will forget to Up in the future. I do appreciate everyone's positive contributions, even when I forget to show it.

As for the Upping categories, the only one I'm dubious about is #2. Just saying something I agree with usually needs a bit of one of the other categories as well, before getting an Up (generally a virtual one, for reasons stated above, unfortunately).

You forgot...

7: I'm a pathetic toady and will up any old rubbish this particular person posts.

Sorry to be cynical, but someone had to say it :-/

Serial 'upper'

I tend to 'up' a lot, mostly for No.1, but for all the reasons above.

JohnW, you were up *very* early musing on this, so have another 'up' for that :-)

Other Reasons For Upping

1. Thanks for talking about an artist/producer/film/tv programme/director/actor/actress I've heard of, some of these discussions about 70s popular culture go over my head.

2. I've got a massive crush on you, can I have your number?

3. I have a phobia of odd numbers, so I must up this to make it even.

4. You bastard, I wish I was that quick-witted.

Up arrows problem

If I am reading a thread with a lot of posts, invariably I want to 'up' more than I do on a short post.

I am finding that after I have upped a couple of times (not an exact measurement BTW), I find that I am stopped from giving out any more up arrows.

Anyone else have this problem?

Up

I tend to use it if I find a post funny, or agree with the point of view. Will also occasionally up posts by the underdog in an argument, just because I dislike the gang mentality.

No hard feelings

I sometimes make a point of upping people whose posts I normally dislike or with whom I have had a beef. Takes some effort sometimes, but it's probably good for my karmic bank balance.
