What are you listening to right now?
Posted by Albert Edward on 18 November 2009 - 10:24am.
The idea of this blog entry is to provide an ongoing pictorial record of your listening (or just mine if nobody else contributes!)
And please interpret 'current listening' any way you want. Something floating your boat, I guess.

Just to confirm
The 'in pictures only' stipulation has been removed.
For selfish reasons only, of course, so that I can say how good Cortney Tidwell's Boys is, and how the Broadcast and Focus Group album is good like, but probably not worth the five-star review it received in "another mag", and how I was listening to the Philip Glass album in the wake of the Anish Kapoor documentary that seemed to include a couple of Glass compositions.
Because it's obvious that the music you're listening to needs a bit of context, sometimes.
So gas away.
Because I will be.
.
The very definition of 'for fans only'.

The Fuzztones
"Lysergic Emanations".
How good are The Wake!?
very good
but not as good as The Sisters/March Violets, they sound uncannily alike
eh, strike that it seems there's an American band with the same name that sound like that and then there's the Death Metal one... blimey Spotify™ can be a minefield
Oh, I love the March Violets...
going to have dig out some tracks later!
Trinity
I have the limited edition Trinty ep recorded in 07 for their concert at Leeds Uni with 25men (James Ray's last outing), I may be able to point you in the direction of a man who...

Great compilation...
a guy called Ski whom I used to know put that together... really good.

loads of funky soulful grooves - "Help The Bear!" is fantastic, no duds on it.

Wall of Voodoo,
Recent compilation of the first 2 albums, 'Dark Continent' and 'Call of the West'on one cd. Sounds surprisingly fresh.

... The Inkspots
Three Island Records compilations
I was listening to El Pea earlier, now I'm listening to Nice Enough To Eat, then it will be You Can All Join In.
Having heard most of these tracks on these comps in the first place, they don't sound out of place to me at all. In fact, every time I hear Mother Goose, I expect to hear Quintessence's Dive Deep next.
Maybe I'm just trying to relive my youth?
Talking Heads
Never really got round to investigating Talking Heads, so I thought I would.
I'm listening to a three-CD box, which is apparently a good intro to the band, but after a CD and a half of it, I have the feeling a less comprehensive Greatest Hits would probably do me.
Early days, of course...
Talking Heads
This was my way in:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Best-Talking-Heads-Once-Lifetime/dp/B0000074BV/r...
Thanks
I'm on CD two of the box set and things have improved dramatically. Perhaps I'm a mid-period fan in the making?
Rock 'n' Roll
Just 4 CDs.
Three Ace CDs - Little Richard's 'British Hit Singles', Fats Domino's singles '56-'58 and a Ricky Nelson compilation 'Rockin' Ricky', and 'The Sound Of Fury' by Billy Fury (which clocks in at under 23 minutes).
Seeing them soon!
Going to see him tonight
Coincidence.
Amazon has just this second recommended him to me and I'd never even heard of him before. He's 'legendary' according to Amazon...
Gnu Club
former geetarist of thee above, Rank Badgin will be able to give you more info
He's been around the block
He was in The Cramps (Psychedelic Jungle era) and the Gun Club (Las Vegas Story era), and his new album's pretty cool.
The Gun Club were a great band, and their cracked/punky take on blues and field hollers was an obvious precursor of the White Stripes
I last saw him 25 years ago. (Seems like yesterday!).
Here he is back then :
and now :
you're
actually no bad (tee hees)
Hey, how was the gig?
He is a great guitarist - I saw him with The Cramps and Gun Club and I'm sure he was playing with Nick Cave at a gig once - maybe I'm mistaken.
I downloaded that album (legally, from eMusic...) but haven't got round to listening to it yet.
Absolutely brilliant
Rocking and free, slightly camp, all the band in mariachi suits, good stage banter, great drummer, simple rock & roll which is so hard to get right.
On a foul night, even by the standards of Glasgow in November, it was great that 100 people bothered to go and see a rock and roll tribal elder.
Yes, he has gigged with all of the above. 25 years since The Primevals supported The Gun Club at Strathclyde! It doesn't feel like it.
There's a review here :

Accept no substitute.
Have I The Right by The Honeycombs
Having just seen Telstar and the scene where they all bash drums for the chorus. Bangiest record ever.
De Poop Chute Comode
thought I oughta check them out as a lot of old goths like them - they're pish
back to The Van Der Graaf Generator, now that's what I call Goth!

Tonight I was listening to Puccini Messa di Gloria Jose Carreras and Herman Prey .
but did take a break to listen to my mates new song http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=101....
Right now...
... I am mostly listening to Cornology by the Bonzos.
Wilco..
just acquired three double albums of them (Yankee, Ghost, Sky) on the strength of really liking a single track off a sampler (Muzzle). After one record I'd say they've got nice chords, odd sounds, and a rather lugubrious singer.
Pressing on.
nick lowe
just saw him with cooder and his singing and songwriting outshone ry.
5 Years of Hyperdub
For anyone interested in dipping a toe into the deep, murky waters of Dubstep, this is a great primer.

Robert Pollard
Mad with this guy at the moment - so have "From a Compound Eye" and "NOrmal Happiness" on constant rotation - highly recommended!!!
.....
Right now...
Frank Sidebottom's e f g & h
but the Bonzo's have been on the iPod today.
For obvious
reasons, I'm exploring The Alan Parsons Project on Spotify. Truth be told, I can only really get into the obvious ones Eye in the Sky and Old and Wise, but they are MOR of high quality without doubt.
Strange night: Springsteen and French hip hop
I love Supreme NTM, Europe's Public Enemy (can't do a circumflex on the first 'e')
.................
I am listening to
the cricket. West Indies 332-5 in Adelaide. Thank God they're making some runs after the 1st test debacle.
d'ya think this man has taken drugs?
a solid gold classic IMO anyway

This Morning
Just finished this that the postie brought for me yesterday:
and moved on to this:
after which we're probably looking at some:
...
...
You know what it looks like...
The remastered MMT is a revelation - I never cared much for Side 1's tracks (save 'I Am The Walrus') but being able to hear the depth and texture now imbues even 'Blue Jay Way' with hitherto unknown depths, brings out that gorgeous spacy, bass-pulsing outro to the title track, and spruces up the over-familiarity of 'Strawberry Fields' 'Penny Lane' a treat. Am totally besotted by it now.

The Cure

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Orange. He rocks!

England 180 for 6. Tough time in the series.
Martyn's new Fabric mix
This is really good, an uptempo mix of breaks, techno and dubstep, beautifully mixed (with the exception a one mid-album bummer) and life-affirming in its drummy funkiness. Methinks I shall be mostly listening to this for a while.
Runt:The Ballad of Todd Rundgren.
One of his earlier,less frantic,albums
Diamonds In The Rough
Inspired by the Swans thread
It's World of Skin's We'll Fall Apart, WoS being a side project of Michael Gira and Jarboe, leaning more heavily on Jarboe's vocals than Gira's. Eerie, dark and epic, just as you would want and expect.
Some Northern Soul...
...as recommended by Andrew Harrison in the new mag.
on crackly but full-flavoured vinyl
now more restful
and again
Future DnB and Dubstep
I didn't get this the first couple of listens but it's really clicked for me today: a futuristic, totally immersive mix of downtempo drum and bass, dubstep and RnB just begging for someone to call it a new genre and give it a name. Beautiful.
James Holden
Ignore the haircut if you can, this is an amazing mix. Hauntology, shoegaze and Kraut; the build up to the Mogwai remix and then the track itself is jaw-dropping.
And here's the tracklisting.

This tune from it is truly lovely and being played to death at Sprocket Towers...

Mark my words...
this one surprised me
blame it on their wonderful (I thought) Glastonbury performance
