What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?
Posted by AndyPage on 13 April 2011 - 12:25pm.
Whenever I see someone with an iPod etc, I am always curious about what they are listening to.
So, as you read this, what are you listening to, either by choice, or because you are in an office with a radio playing?
I will start off...I am listening to Beach House's marvellous 'Teen Dream' album, on purpose.

Ipod on shuffle...
... Magnetic Field by Joe Meek
Lucky Number by Lene Lovitch
Lauren Laverne's playing it. It'll be the one song in twenty on 6Music that I've heard before. And the one artist in twenty that I've heard of. So back to obscurity for the next three hours.
You lucky devil
That's one of my favourite singles ever. I've got the album it came from on red vinyl. It's rubbish.
In reality
Ambient traffic noise, the tapping of computer keyboards and clicking of mice.
In my head, Lazy by Suede has been swimming around for about quarter of an hour now.
West Side - Studio.
*makes west side gesture with hands*
All my listening
Is currently done on my commute for the most part, so if you ever want to know what I'm listening to just check me up on Twitter (@johnnywas25). It's a constant flow of rubbish and great music from about 7am -9am. Like a radio show with the volume turned down....
If I was to hit play right now on my Ipod it would be 80s Mod band The Direct Hits and their album Blow Up. 10 tracks of 1966 flavoured Mod/Psych, all swinging London, black and white films and that moment when the Mods started going psychedelic around the edges. But this was recorded in 1984 so it's almost pastiche. Saved from that by some fantastic songwriting from Colin Swann and Geno Buckmaster, formerly of The Exits, who produced one New Wave/Powerpop single called Fashion Victim in the late 70s. If you like The Jam, XTC, Squeeze and the more whimsical side of The Who circa 66/67 you'd like The Direct Hits.
This sort of request can mixed results,
I was on a train a while ago it was late on a Friday and a guy obviously slightly refreshed asked the same questions.
“Well” he asked in broad slurred Sheffield accent
“I Allus always wanted t’know what all you lot are listenin’ to, when I’m on’t ‘train... everyone’s got ya head phones on... and wonder what tha all listen’ too.
“I’m listen to Journey best band in world (this was before the whole glee “more than feeling” thing) so come on what tha all listenin’ ta?”
It was good natured and so he went round his end of the carriage chivivng answer out of us all.
On lass offered up Whitney which got the reply “what! is it 1985 or summat” this from a Journey fan.
Coldplay got the thumbs up
An older gent was listening to the Eagles which got two thumbs up
When it came to me I went for honesty and also I couldn’t think of what would be “credible” so fessed up to listening to “The Alegri Miserere” which was the truth.
“Tha what?”
“Alegri Miserere it’s polyphonic choral music “ I continued sinking further into my pseud’s corner seat.
Cue a “garlic bread” style riff on “polyphony” etc
“Tha dunt want that, tha wants Journey, best band in’t chuffin’ world” and then sat down in triumphed and a swig of his stella.
Brilliant
I've always wanted to do that too.
Can you tell me what a 'garlic bread' riff is?
Sorry it's probably Peter Kay's most famous
stand up routine (he used to sell t-shirts with it on)
here's a mashed up version couldn't find it uncut.
http://youtu.be/OTxL6DaOs74
Oh
I may be one of the few people who has never seen a Peter Kay routine of any sort. Not through choice, more by accident - he simply passed me by.
A brief précis
You know stuff that isn't around any more? Right, well, do you remember it? Yeah? Me too, great innit, nostalgia? I remember loads of stuff, me, you might remember some of it too.
You are Jason Manford...

Wrong thread, but since I'm here:
Listening to Radcliffe and Maconie on Listen Again in the office (my whole team is off this week, so headphones all the way). They are currently playing the Ace of Spades! And I'm eating strawberries and raspberries, so it's all good here.
due to the wonder of spotify
due to the wonder of spotify & an understanding boss I am currently listening to Fisherman by The Congos.
My username is seanoneill so if anyone wants to link up feel free.
I always want to know what other people are listening to & find it fun to guess! I was set next to a bloke on the tube last week who pointed at my ipod then gave me a thumbs up! I was listening to the fall so he must be one of the 49,999 other people who can't be wrong.
Pod

Struggling Man - Jimmy Cliff
Radiolab
Bonkers philosophical/Big Ideas US podcast called Radiolab. Currently listening to an episode called 'Help!'which asks "what do you do when your own worst enemy is...you?"
It's a jumble of edits and layers as if Radio 4 was being remixed by the Avalanches.
http://www.radiolab.org/2011/mar/08/
Radiolab is fab.
Learned about it after hearing several recommendations from various Massive members on the site.
Consistently surprising and interesting.
It is
I must have heard about from in here then. I'm not surprised!
It's a great example of how to take advantage of a medium (radio) and an enjoyable romp for an hour to boot.
Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot
But by the time I'd typed it it'd finished!
I have got that album somewhere
with a bonus cd - must look it out and play it. Couple of great tracks on it.
Fats Domino
The "Fats On Fire" album. "Old Man Trouble". It's always Fats O'Clock somewhere.

Scott Walker
'That's How I Got To Memphis'
I love Scott
and I love that song but I've never heard him do it, is it any good and where can I get it?
I have it on a
'twofer' - Stretch/We Had It All - two albums on one CD. Scott goes country and easy on my ears although doesn't appear that too many critics agree with me.

Absolutely chuff all.
I don't know how anyone finds time to listen to music other than when travelling or at home with feet up. I'm on bloody holiday and I still hardly get to listen to anything!
Little Red Riding Hood Hit The Road
From Robert Wyatt's Rock Bottom
Rock Bottom.
Class.
on the train
Shiela take a Bow in the ears and Penge on the eyes. The only thing I know about Penge is that Brian Jones lived there, or Bill Wyman, or someone. I don't know who the Shiela in question is either.
The Sheila
on the cover of Sheila Take a Bow is questionable too, and most definitely didn't start off as one, either, being Candy Darling, a well-known transsexual.
Penge
All I know about Penge is that the Penge Bungalow Murders was Rumpole's finest hour.
No music allowed
in our office, but my own personal hard drive is playing 'Put On Your Sunday Clothes' from Hello Dolly via Wall-E
My Boss
I'm sat at home listening to my boss drone on via a conference call on his weekly staff meeting.... I'm in Singapore and he;s in Minneapolis (and no, he is not Prince)
Another hour and it should be done. After that probably bed with the new Elbow album on as I finish my cup of tea.
Someone droning on about their local garden centre
Someone else droning on about their dumb children
Someone going into meltdown about their slow internet connection.

BFBS radio online..
as it's still my favourite station (after many years in Germany, although it's now been downgraded transmitterwise, in preparation for the army's eventual withdrawal from here.)
This week is fascinating as they're playing the force's top 500, I mean Pink Floyd/Jam/Love Affair/Black Sabbath on morning mainstream radio! Friday they're doing the top 100. Recommended.
Nice forgotten oldie today was the Source feat. Candi Staton. Terrific. Right now it's the Ace of Spades.
Ah go on..
okay, here's Candy.
Especially nice bassline and finger snapping.

The new Fleet Foxes
For the 3rd time today. It's gorgeous.
from a friend on another forum
A rich seam
of fantastic stuff. Have an up arrow for listening to Roy Harper!
At this very moment.
Only The Lord Knows - Mavis Staples. It's a rather bad habit of mine to tweet what I'm listening to most days on Twitter. Ooh! Now Sweet Dreams(Live) - Emmylou Harris has just popped out.
Rather enjoyable they are too
It's always nice to see what somebody else is listening to at the same time as I'm listening.
Thank you kind sir.
I like to think of it as a kind of musical Tourettes. Fool That I Am - Etta James. There I go again.
Musical Tourettes
Perfect: I've been trying to put a lable on the habit I have of naming out loud the artists and pieces of music used in adverts. And on films. And in shops. And on the radio. And on the radio on in the background in shops on TV (this one really craps over Mrs Murrance's enjoyment of Eastenders).
Splendid!
Supposedly working
Supposedly working at home today, so had the chance to listen to a couple of albums I recently bought, R.E.M's Collaspe Into Now and Paul Simon's So Beautiful Or So What.
The new Low album...
...C'mon.
Only the first listen, but I'm going to stick my neck on the line and say it's brilliant.
has it come out already?
It has.
Came out on Monday.
With that and new albums from Bill Callahan, TV on the Radio and Panda Bear all in the same week, I am going to have a very happy April.
Bill Callahan and Low
Now those two albums are fantastic. Pretty disappointed with the new TVOTR album though. Haven't heard the Panda Bear album yet.
I hadn't realised there *was* a new Low record.
I love them. The Great Destroyer is one of those albums that gets regular outings chez Bob. Love it.
Incidentally, my mate Ben, the owner-operator of the amazing Dwarfcraft Devices, once made a pedal called The Great Destroyer in honour of Low. Alan Sparkhawk bought about five of them and now uses them regularly with the band. AMAZING.
Radio 3
Arts and ideas podcast...and to be honest it's really getting on my nerves.
MC Solaar
the one that samples Serge's Bonnie et Clyde.

Now, people of Word: what's the title of the song by Alison Krauss on the CD (May issue)?
Like a brown-noser
one of The Word CDs from recent months. Haven't been bothering with them so much since my record-buying has picked up. There's some quite nice stuff on them, turns out.

PJ Harvey
Let England Shake, on Spotify
Well...
It's That Look In Your Eye by Ali Campbell - which should by rights have been awful, what with it being an aeon since UB40 did anything decent. But it's a lovely, sunny poptastic choon. I'm listening to it voluntarily, as part of a Spotify playlist for my five-year-old daughter.
Next up is O Superman!
Singles
I managed to find almost all my long lost 45s on Spotify and created a playlist with them. Instant nostalgia!
dEUS
SUDS AND SODA
Pigeon Detectives
Still catching up with new releases on Spotify
Just got home half hour ago.
In the car I was listening to Godspeed you black emperor cd courtesy of el Hombre followed by Robert Earl Keen best of. Was a long drive back from Presteigne and both of these selections improved the journey somewhat.
iPod?
Chapter One of Iris Murdoch's 'Under The Net' (Audio book, only 9 hours to go) has just been replaced by The Doors' 'Strange Days'.
Old fashioned way of listening to music, I accept, but I've now had that one Doors' record playing all yesterday and all today.
Random?
Nah!
George Harrison...
...is currently, in another universe, playing 'What is Life?' live in Japan.
Lovely.
Oooh, can I have another one?
Have Mercy On Me Baby by Loretta Lynn, ably supported by the splendid Jack White. Love that album.
The iPod shuffle is a thing of wonder.
Procol Harum
A Salty Dog....... the live version with the strings and stuff.
Ipod shuffle offering
Just got back to work from lunch. Turned on iTunes on the work computer and the Word friendly Tom Waits showed up, singing Bad Liver & A Broken Heart. Very nice. May have to listen to the whole album this afternoon.
Neil Young
Cinnamon Girl
Cee Lo Green - Satisfied
Not on an iPod, but I've got yesterday's "Later..." running on the iPlayer on the other tab, and I am going to keep listening to this song over and over because its sending a shiver down my spine. I think it's great!
Fifteen minutes and thirty two seconds
of whoops, yelps, groans and screams.
Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal from The Ultrasound Remixes.
Paper Aeroplane
Test piloting the new Alison Krauss, doesn't sound much different to Lonely Runs Both Ways but that's not a bad thing.
Sigur Ros
Agaetis Byrjun - the title track of the album on random. Nine minutes of shimmering beauty

Penguin Cafe Orchestra
Two Beans Shaker from their latest album A Matter of Life...
Because it is jolly good music to work/ revise to. Having said that I'm on here, so it isn't going too well.
Johnny Cash...
compilation double LP. Yeehaw.
Carney
by Leon Russell.
A new discovery for me. Superb.
Lloyd Cole
Don't Get Weird on Me, Babe.
It's been a while.
I love that album
I am not one for shouting stuff at gigs, but during an acoustic Lloyd Cole gig in Wolves about 7 years ago, he invited requests so I asked for 'There For Her'. He politely said it was difficult without the orchestra and asked for another, so I went for the relatively safe 'Jennifer She Said', which he duly played.
Judee Sill
Live in London - the BBC Sessions. Well, the three tracks I used up the end of my e-Music allowance on before it expires today anyway. They're very good. I may download the rest of the album when the new credits arrive tomorrow.
Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes
Just at the moment The Love I Lost.
The absolutely lovely new album
"Kick Death's Ass" from Andreas Mattsson ( ex-Popsicle ).
Highly recommended to middle aged slightly melancholic men and women wondering where their youth went...but learning to enjoy the small trivial pleasures of everyday life.
Bittersweet lyrics, bittersweet melodies.
"That's how I feel
Like a sunny room and two grownups
And one's in love and one is not
And one sits down and tells him so
He thought he had it all but here it goes
How easy it can be sometimes
Nothing to read between the lines
She'll get her things and that's the end
She says she's found another friend
Like if those two were me and you
And you would leave me lonely in that sunny room
That's how I feel"
One of many songs that I'm falling in love with right now listening to this wonderful album.
Thanks for the tip
Got a couple of Popsicle albums, have always been very fond of their song 'Make Up' so will investigate!
The Dave Miller Set 'Mr Guy Fawkes'
Lovely piece of warn Australian psychedelia from 1969. Very English sounding actually. I know nothing about them but heard The Church do a cover of this song at the weekend and am now a victim to its charms. It's not on Spotify so here's the YouTube...

Helmet
Seeing Eye Dog by Helmet http://open.spotify.com/album/385rXRPdfosiUrhlcaAOvp which is jolly good noisy stuff, apart from a woefully misguided cover of And Your Bird Can Sing.
Zappa Bootleg
A live 1984 rendition of "Zoot Allures" on which Mr Z advises a heckler to "Eat shit".
This is not my favourite edition of the Zappa show. While he had superb bands during the '78-'84 tours and a great frontman in Ike Willis, somehow it all seems a bit lifeless compared to previous editions.
The final 1988 tour was a "massive improve'lence" but apparently was so fraught with band disharmony that when it finally imploded he vowed to never tour again. Illness and his death in 1993 ensured that this was indeed so.
