What a racket!

DC Eisenhower's picture

This morning, in good faith, I settled down in front of the telly with a cup of coffee to watch the Australian Open Final between Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka. I had to turn it off after about twenty minutes, because I couldn't take the noise that the two players were making. Sharapova's grunting is bad enough, but the high-pitched howl emitted by Azaranka before every shot is way beyond the pale. It sounds like something you'd hear in a wildlife documentary, the kind of noise some unfortunate mammal would make as it is being devoured by a hungry cheetah. It's nothing less than flagrant gamesmanship and it should be addressed by the authorities.

How I agree

I watched the Murray semi-final and thought it one of the best matches I've ever seen. There were none of the banshee wailing which drives me mad.
A mate of mine should me a DVD someone gave him of Azaranka playing someone equally vocal that had a porn soundtrack dubbed onto it. The tears were running down my face with laughter.

Absolutely agree.

One of the competitors was interviewed on radio this week as spectators and radio listeners have been complaining about it. She made no apologies for the noise she makes and said she'll carry on doing it. She didn't explain why though.. A few matches last year at Wimbledon were ruined by excessive, loud grunting. Why has it become an accepted part of the modern game? It's bad behaviour and I would have thought the players coaches at least would discourage them..

the problem is ...

I suspect the coaches encourage them to do it, because they think it helps break the concentration of the opponent.

It's about putting off your opponent. It is no coincidence

That all of the shrieky female tennis players, from Monica Seles down, have been trained in the US - where they are taught to win by any means necessary (cf. McEnroe's outbursts, which usually preceded a victory). It's tactical - compare sledging in cricket or the reputedly dreadful things that footballers say to each other during free kicks.

I agree that a lot of women's tennis is now unwatchable because of it. How bad does it have to get before the ATP (or whoever) does something?

And will everybody please stop calling it grunting. Grunting is bass. These noises are treble - shrieking, and sometimes actually wailing.
